I love that these premium channels are starting to go streaming for a direct cost rather than requiring cable packages. The future is starting, finally.

I wish I could cut the chord but there are still way too many channels that are just not available online for me. I'm at the mercy of Rogers/Bell :(

want to watch hockey? better have cable! (Since they blackout the online streams for local games)

want to watch OTA programming? gotta have cable, cause now some networks are blocking online access if you're not their direct subscriber to their cable.

the Canadian telecom landscape needs these channels to break off from requiring cable to put them in their place.

$15 a month for one channel? That could sure add up in a hurry.

What other "channel" has a lineup that includes the likes of Bill Maher, John Oliver, Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley, The Leftovers, and Getting On?

The only other channels that contain anything I consider worth watching are FX, Fox, Comedy Central, PBS, and a single show on Showtime.

If $15 is HBO's "bundled" price what makes you think they're going to offer it a la carte for less?

I'm sure there's a load of stuff only available in Portugal. I wouldn't know, since I don't go to Portuguese sites.

I mean Apple like :p Siri isn't available in portuguese from portugal (but will be available in brazilian portuguese in 8.3) Apple Pay, iTunes Radio, Beats... Those little things make me a little butt hurt :(

whatever happened to that announced The CW on apple TV btw

//

you guys have to pay for premium cable per channel? jikes over here I pay 34€ for all 40 or so premium channels combined

So instead of one bill to my cable company I'll have multiple bills to different content providers? Or is all of this going to get billed through iTunes? I don't think we'll ever get to complete nirvana which would be okay cable company let me pick the channels I want and quote me a total price for them. I don't want to pay $15 for HBO, $8 for Netflix, $7 for Hulu, etc. Talk about not user friendly.

You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of cable companies' business model. They make their money through bundling and by forcing you to receive channels you don't want (for which other companies pay them.)

It's one content provider... not necessarily one channel. HBO I believe includes HBO and Cinemax... If you had someone like ABC doing this, you'd potentially have ABC, ABC Family, Disney Channel, ESPN, etc. NBC would be NBC, SciFi... At least potentially if they set it up that way.

I think it's a start. I'm showing my age, but this reminds me of years ago when I received 2 bills for my phone; one for local and one for long-distance. One could be New England Telephone, the other MCI, AT&T, etc. So there's hope this could all come together, and have one bill, one point of shopping [say iTunes] and that's it...?

I'm seriously going to look at this, and see how it will work. We have Cable now for Internet, and one of the premium items is HBO. Other than that, all I care about is local stuff for Football and some golf, and other local sports. I can do all the via a HD antenna. So here's hoping to be able to cut the cord soon!

This needs to be $8/month to gain traction.

would be nice, but 15/mth is already cheaper than the "bundled" cable package price in some regions:

For Rogers in Canada (i'm assuming this HBO streming will eventually get here), to get HBO, you MUST buy the "movie package" at 20/mth on top of your existing cable package. or get a full cable package at 120/mth

there's no a-la-carte option.

And why is this still in talks? Why wasn't it implemented 5 years ago? The media companies would have way more of my money if they would just offer a TV over LTE on my mobile device.

I'm fine with Netflix, don't miss cable since I cut it.

I can download any movie or show and play it on my tv via apple tv.

Lets just say the website has something to do with Jack Sparrow ;)

of course you won't miss cable, you are getting the content some other way

HBO GO is abysmal... hope HBO NOW proves to be all encompassing... seriously, i've tapped everything decent to watch on GO, and it took me all of about a month.

and if they continue to take a full day or two to upload a recent ep of a show, they've certainly not gained me as a customer. the internet usually has that stuff up in less than the length of the broadcast.

Well Portugal is a tiny country, with the population of a good-sized city and suburbs. There really isn't any getting around that.

do they have the movie packages of the month online too? or is it just hbo originals?

it's DEFINITELY not better than Netflix. not by a long shot. most of the movies on HBO go are 80s-90s flicks no one remembers existing.

but to answer your question, no it's not solely HBO originals, it usually has 5-10 good movies from the last 10 years and a bunch of crap you don't want to see. it's only worth it for the HBO series. presently.
