What a cluster. They should've gotten rid of both Go and Now since neither provide anything that isn't already in Max. Literally no reason to keep "HBO" and "HBO Max", when the latter is the former plus more. And Cinemax must not be long for this world, considering HBO owns both and stole the Max from it. What a cluster.

Uhh, they did get rid of both. Max is a service that includes far more than HBO. Do you think that should come free with an HBO subscription? No, it shouldn't - and is why HBO is the lower tier. HBO didn't come up with this branding, AT&T did, they own both. HBO's higher ups have been opposed to virtually all of this, so how did "HBO steal the Max from it"? FYI, the word Max existed long before Cinemax.

It does, actually. Most HBO cable subscribers have access to Max (of course including the regular HBO content) through the app. This is why they can now drop HBO Go.

To clarify:
HBO Go has been replaced with HBO and HBO Max but HBO Max isn't the same as HBO Go or HBO. To simplify things we'll now have HBO On Demand, HBO Now, HBO, HBo Max and HBO Pro.

Now they need a special iPad app for HBO Max. So, people can say they have HBO Maxipad edition. 😁

Haven't had HBO in quite a while now. I dumped the channel when I realized I was paying for something I hardly ever watched. All the shows I liked where cancelled, they never had any good movies on, it seemed like there were fewer boxing matches and most of them stunk, Game of Thrones wasn't enough to justify $120 to $180 per year. Can't remember the exact monthly price.

I also dumped all the other premium channels for the same reason. It didn't matter when they were part of a bundle that was cheaper than not having them. Netflix and Prime cover my interests far better. Although I only bother with Prime for the shipping. Prime video is just a pleasant bonus.

I’m confused. I only accidentally discovered my TV subscription to HBO allows me access to HBO Max. That’s good. Why not just have HBO Max and that’s it... if you subscribe to HBO, you get it, and if not, you can subscribe through the app. Why are they intent on making what should be simple as confusing as possible?

My previous joking post aside...

It's strange when a company as big as HBO and its parent can't figure out how to brand themselves. They keep changing things up constantly, confusing customers and potential customers alike.

Why can't they just call it "HBO" period? That's what it used to be. Either you had HBO, or you didn't. There weren't different degrees of HBO.
The problem was corporate parent AT&T. It seems that no one who works at HBO wanted AT&T to use "HBO" anywhere in the name of this new streaming service, because they thought it would be, you know, a little confusing. But AT&T just HAD to capitalize on that corporate synergy. And obviously they bollocksed it all up.

HBO = $15/month through a third party vendor that hasn't signed a deal with HBO to include Max (Amazon, Roku)
HBO Max = $15/month with HBO or a third party vendor that has a deal to include Max (U-Verse, DirecTV, AT&T, iTunes, YouTube TV, Charter Spectrum, Hulu, XFinity, Verizon, Cox)

Thank you for explaining. How ridiculous.

God... I read this post like three times AND I CURRENTLY SUBSCRIBE to HBO Max... and I'm STILL not sure what it is/what it includes. I use YouTube TV and didn't have any HBO programming, signed up for Max, and now i get HBO Max and the live HBO Channels (HBO2, HBO West, etc). BUT... that doesn't seen to be the case for other services? I think that's what HBO Now is... now, just for live HBO programming? Like if you want to watch Wimbledon or boxing or Last Week tonight while it airs live, you can do it through HBO Now?
Bottom line- AT&T really screwed the pooch on this one.

That's precisely what you will get in the Apple app store when HBO Go shuts down on July 31st. The HBO Now app is already gone (automatically upgraded to HBO Max). It will only continue to exist on platforms that don't have the HBO Max app.

So glad AT&T has been giving me free HBO access for the last 3 or 4 years now. I just created my HBO Max account yesterday!

Hahaha, this is like the classroom bit from The Meaning of Life ...

Granted, HBO Max should have never used the word HBO at all.

I listened to a pod the other day, they had some interesting perspective on this - they could've gone Warner Entertainment / Warner Brothers, but WB doesn't have much brand equity, we know HBO = movies and super high quality originals (Sopranos, GOT, etc.) Of course, they could have also gone further up the corporate ladder and used some kind of AT&T type branding, but everybody hates AT&T :D

Leaving HBO in the name provides decent brand recognition.

Otherwise, see video ... :D

Now, before I begin the lesson, will those of you who are playing in the match this afternoon move your clothes down onto the lower peg immediately after lunch, before you write your letter home, if you're not getting your hair cut, unless you've got a younger brother who is going out this weekend as the guest of another boy, in which case, collect his note before lunch, put it in your letter after you've had your hair cut, and make sure he moves your clothes down onto the lower peg for you.

If I were me, I’d drop all names and call it HBO+.

There should be one HBO app. Then you would either sign in with your provider or buy the subscription in the app. Simple.

All these names and apps for the same goddamn company is just mindstupidly confusing for a consumer deciding what to do, what to subscribe to, what to download and where to watch what. It shouldn't be this hard for me to give them my money. Seriously, whoever is responsible for HBO's product marketing needs to be fired. I've never seen such terrible marketing for a major company.

I think this article set a record for how many times HBO can be put into an article.

I think HBO set a record beating Acura and Lincoln for overly-confusing hardly differentiable product names.

I'm not sure how HBO Now (or soon to be just "HBO") differs from HBO Max. Don't they cost the same anyway? Or do they intend to reduce the price of HBO Now and keep $14.99/month for HBO Max?
Hbo max is like hbo now plus streaming other non hbo shows. So it’s a hybrid of hbo and Netflix model.
