What else were they supposed to do? They wanted to leverage the "HBO" brand for their new streaming service (so it had to have a new name with "HBO" in it), but on the other hand there were still three legacy services that have "HBO" in their names that they couldn't just turn off without p!ssing off the existing customers (the cable service, HBO Now and HBO Go). They calculated that the value of using the HBO brand would outweigh the initial customer confusion. Now they are taking the first step to consolidate the brands.
They didn’t viciously attack anything.I would never pay HBO a single dime after they bowed to the Woke Cult and removed "Gone With the Wind."
Never trust a company that viciously attacks a work of art, even if you dislike it. HBO has disgraced itself.
On the other hand, the ridiculous name changes are hilarious. Really, who is running their marketing department?😂
Not true. The HBO channel on Roku continues to work, and you can use the Roku app to watch HBO on iOS and Android. I believe the same is true for the Amazon Video HBO channel. Roku or Amazon channel subscribers were never able to use the HBO Now app. If you subscribed to HBO Now you can use the HBO Now app on Roku or Amazon, and HBO Max on iOS and Android. So nothing has changed for any of those customers AFAIK.“They couldn’t just turn off...”
Actually, that’s exactly what they did for HBO Now users on Amazon Fire or Roku devices, who now can’t even log in on iOS or Android either.
HBO Max is basically HBO more. It has HBO plus Warner Media content. What sucks is it’s not available in Apple’s TV app on the Roku platform. I guess because AT&T hasn’t worked out a deal with Roku Apple isn’t allowed to offer that content inside their app on Roku. You don't understand how this is confusing? Have you read this thread?
If everyone who pays for HBO via their cable or satellite bill gets HBO Max then HBO go was redundant. But could they just hurry up and work out a deal with Roku already? Every other app is on that platform. It never made sense that there were 2 separate apps in the first place.
There is no way to watch the additional Max content outside of the HBO Max app on any platform, including the TV app on the Apple TV. That appears to be the whole reason of the curfuffle with Roku and Amazon. They want to offer HBO Max through their channel subscriptions (and get a cut from the subscription fees), whereas HBO wants people to use their app so they don't have to share the revenue (just like Amazon itself does for their Prime Video service). What sucks is it’s not available in Apple’s TV app on the Roku platform. I guess because AT&T hasn’t worked out a deal with Roku Apple isn’t allowed to offer that content inside their app on Roku.
Awesome, thanks for that key clarification. Didn’t really know what to make of the whole article.HBO = $15/month through a third party vendor that hasn't signed a deal with HBO to include Max (Amazon, Roku)
HBO Max = $15/month with HBO or a third party vendor that has a deal to include Max (U-Verse, DirecTV, AT&T, iTunes, YouTube TV, Charter Spectrum, Hulu, XFinity, Verizon, Cox)
HBO is so yesterday. Big WhupI think this article set a record for how many times HBO can be put into an article.
I'm not sure how HBO Now (or soon to be just "HBO") differs from HBO Max. Don't they cost the same anyway? Or do they intend to reduce the price of HBO Now and keep $14.99/month for HBO Max?

I'm pretty sure it's not.Well your post is simply incorrect,
What has been reported is that you can't get HBO Max on the Roku. You can still watch the HBO channel (without the additional Max content), so nothing has changed for you. You can also subscribe to HBO Now directly through HBO and use HBO Now on the Roku. This would also entitle you to use HBO Max on other platforms where it's available.and it’s been heavily reported by the media vis a vis the carriage dispute between Roku, Amazon, and HBO.
As a Roku channel subscriber you could never use the HBO Now app. But you had access to the same content in the Roku channel. As for me personally, I have the misfortunate of having subscribed via Roku, so I cannot access HBO Now for the time being via the app.
I'm not confused at all. From what you wrote you never had HBO Now or HBO Go, but the HBO channel from Roku. And that was your own choice.Edit: Just to be clear, I‘m referring to “HBO Now,” not ”HBO Go,” which is something else entirely. Confused yet?
I think this article set a record for how many times HBO can be put into an article.
Are these the idiots that deleted Gone With The Wind?
I would only add that if I like a movie enough I would put my money where my mouth was and purchase it myself, which solves the issue. They didn’t viciously attack anything.
I love how people are so touchy about their favorite racist movies.
If I want to watch HBO on an app, I want to search for “HBO” and download “HBO.” There should be one single app, and whatever subscription I have should be tied to this single app.
I don’t understand why this is so damned complicated.
I think confusion is the strategy. HBO is no longer a great offering with streaming services offering way more and just as good of content for less. HBO doesn’t do anything the way a tech company like Netflix would which is why their apps suck. They still want to be just HBO, but if they confuse enough people and add some titles like Friends, they can get people to signup for HBO Max which makes them look like they have embraced the tech world. We all know HBO clearly hasn’t. They still want their cake and eat it too. They want to take money from both sides. In their perfect world, everyone would have a cable subscription, not be able to sign into HBO as it doesn’t work. Then pay for HBO through Hulu and Amazon. Then just to get Friends signup for Max to get subscribers to pay multiple times for HBO and an extra Max subscription just for Friends. My previous joking post aside...
It's strange when a company as big as HBO and its parent can't figure out how to brand themselves. They keep changing things up constantly, confusing customers and potential customers alike.
Why can't they just call it "HBO" period? That's what it used to be. Either you had HBO, or you didn't. There weren't different degrees of HBO.
I don’t understand why HBO has so many different services. It’s too confusing for the average customer.
