They chose the worse time to raise prices. At least do it when there is something good airing. I mean what do we have now that’s new? Give people reason to keep paying. It’s not rocket science!

Yearly prices are also going up. The ad-free plan is $110 per year (up from $100), the Standard plan is $185 per year (up from $170), and the Premium plan is $230 per year (up from $210).

Hmm… What do Standard and Premium provide if the base plan is *ad-free*? Is the content limited, say to only “premium” shows or HBO originals?

Inquiring minds and all that!

Switcher, thanks for the info! (Love your handle by the way — it was an incredible breakthrough for the Mac.)

Basic With Ads is not an ad-free plan

Ah, so Standard & Premium are the ad-free ones and there's no difference in content, that is, which shows are available.

Beyond that, the differences will hardly matter to many, if not most, people — not including, of course, the techie devotees on MR! 😎

The main thing you get with Premium — for more $ — is the ability to download more shows to watch “on the go” on ridiculously small devices (vs. TVs)! LOL!

Oh, and to view them in what strikes many as over-hyped 4K Ultra HD! There again, for viewing shows largely on smallish devices where the visual differences won't matter or even be that noticeable to most people!

N.B. Written by someone well satisfied with a 720p 32” TV! No doubt, many take scores of shows with them, can see dramatic differences with 4K Ultra HD, and have no problem watching movies or TV shows on their iPhones or iPads. For them, paying $4 extra a month is a pittance and surely well worth it!

Subscription world will come to an end. Everyone will get frustrated by the prices, changes in licensing.

This is madness
I agree. Tangible media will make a resurgence, like vinyl. Streaming everything is unreliable from an availability viewpoint, and expensive. Buy what you love and watch it whenever you want, wherever you want, as often as you want, no Internet needed.

I subscribed to HBO max for three years, but finally gave up due to the prices a year ago. Now I just pirate the one or two shows they have that I like. When it was cheaper, it made more sense to be subscribed, now it doesn’t.

I just went to cancel, and they offered $30 off. This is in addition tp my $25 AMEX cash back promo. There are always deals to be had.

Many of these services are eliminating access to their vast back catalog because they found out they will contractually have to pay profit participants and they had closed the books on some of the content.

Talk about greed. We don’t want to have to pay residuals for our own content so we will put it back in the vault forever.

they should definitely keep at this! they’ve already pushed many (myself included) back to the high seas… see you there?
I’m shocked more people aren’t doing this now. Finding a Debrid service gives you afar greater access to content and usually at the best quality. It’s too easy to sail nowadays.

On the other hand, if the tv/movie industry would just be like the music industry and have a couple of different services with everything on it at an affordable price we wouldn’t have to raise the flag

My yearly renewal is in 3 days. I went to cancel a couple of weeks ago and they offered it at $30 off (so $139.99/year) that with the AMEX offer I have for another $25 off I decided to do it. Now wondering if they are going to try and raise it on me before it goes through in a few days. So far still saying "Your plan will change to Standard for $139.99/year, plus applicable taxes on Oct 24, 2025."

Never thought it would happen but all these yearly (or worse) price hikes actually pushed me back into console gaming after cancelling everything by Apple TV+, and I can't say I really miss any of those subscriptions.
