The problem I have is that there are so many subscription services now, that you need multiple to consume the content I want to see.

I bet I only watch 2 shows per subscription per year, maybe with one or two films, but that’s already a lot.

This means these two shows cost me around $17 * 12 = $204
So for two services = $408!

That means buying DVDs for an entire season, which is what I did before the streaming boom, is much cheaper.

Plus, I keep and own it. I can transfer the ‘license’ (aka sell the DVDs).

I would rather go back to physical media. And if it’s digital, I don’t accept the crappy licensing terms we get now.

As an example, I emigrated back to Europe, and I had to change territories. Over 50 movies I bought on Apple are gone now (unless I move back to the States). Movies I paid for.

Just create new accounts when deals are present.
For example I happily gave up an old hulu account for a new one for .99C/M for 12 months last black friday. Expecting to have to make a new account again this Black Friday. For $12/year the content library is fantastic.

AMEX gives you 100% off several services for a few months if you activate your card "deals".

I stopped paying for the add on Netflix account (honestly shouldn’t have in the first place) I’m on a Netflix with my family. I don’t live at home. Now when we want to watch we just change the household every time, and the other just has to say “I’m vacationing” when that prompt comes up, yes it’s annoying, but better than paying that fee imo.

Well, when you pay for a subscription that says you can log into n number of devices simultaneously, it shouldn’t matter where those devices are.

But it does matter if you read the ToU:

2.22 Once you create a HBO Max Account, you may have the option to add up to five (5) authorised user profiles to your HBO Max Account (the “Authorised Users”). We may limit the maximum number of Authorised Users that can simultaneously use the Platform and watch Content (see Section 7.11) and will inform you on the Platform of any such limitations. Authorised Users must be members of your household.

Not surprised with the move. All streaming services will follow. It will eventually lead to higher revenue for the company as more customers will be signing up for the service.

No need to point out truth here, let all the complainers live in their own world.

Netflix kind of proved this did in fact increase revenue and subscriber numbers, so.

I hate every streaming service with a passion except for Apple TV+ because it's the only streaming service that lets me play a high quality HDR version of a TV show or movie on my laptop (even though the content is not great).

Every single other service like Netflix and HBO Max insists on the worst quality, lowest bitrate, 720p garbage SLOP codec you could possibly conceive of for the purposes of "DRM protection" which apparently hasn't stopped piracy one iota. I absolutely frickin DESPISE it.

This is exactly what I do with my Family, but even when I have the household set to my local IP I still get the popup asking me to verify 🤣 Never had any issues so far with it all other than having to put the code in every now and again.

That’s actually all of Hollywoods wet dream. They already do it via theatres so…lol

Predictable right? All the comments here will be “yarrrrr. I never liked them anyway! Unsubscribe!”

Then we’ll see an article later about explosive subscriber growth for hbo max and wonder how that happened

Well the normies will pay for this. I wonder how many actual tech savvy people are running 4 different subscriptions at a time for example, I don't expect too many.

HBO Max with ads is priced at $9.99 per month, while the Standard plan with no ads is $16.99 per month.
Imagine if a time traveler goes back to 2000s and tells some guy enjoying his DVD and VHS collection: bro, in 20 years you will be paying subscription to watch ads! Yes, you heard it right: you will watch ads for your own money!

Netflix experienced strong subscriber growth and an increase in revenue when it stopped allowing customers to share their accounts.
If I was a Netflix subscriber I would feel offended. I tried their service 5 years ago and honestly was unimpressed. Weak collection of classic movies, lots of limitations. I also watched some of their original shows and honestly, it isn't even worth for me to pirate that stuff. Idk why people even pay for that, something truly unexplainable. Btw they are still sending me spam mails that they want me to renew subscription, reported as spam.

Calling it "stealing" to share your subscription for which multiple simultaneous streams are included for your money when a large portion of people would only ever use 1-2 at most is completely disingenuous.
Absolutely. They want me to pay huge money so I would just watch it 2-3 times a month because most of older content is either unavailable on this service or was discontinued. Physical media is cool because it is transferrable, collectibe and they cannot just come out of a blue moon and say "you know, we are taking it back from you! Not available anymore!"

That means buying DVDs for an entire season, which is what I did before the streaming boom, is much cheaper.

Right at the moment when those greedy corporations such as Warner Bros and Sony Music Entertainment realized that they can kill off physical ownership with new tech (no more DVD drives, no flash storage-based alternative) they just assumed people no longer own anything at all and so they provide online movie renting services, and if they ever sell the movies then those would often be much pricier than physical copies ever were, and surely more pricey than a single subscription

Just pirate it? I don't understand why people even use these services that treat their customers like criminals, imposing all these rules, whilst barely having anything to watch. When you use pirate websites, they have EVERY title, and when you pay $7.99 per month you still have ads, you get treated like a criminal with all these platform rules, and their catalogue way smaller

I share my Netflix with my dad since I got it for him. Every few months I confirm my address or holiday status, enter my password, and they think I am on holiday so they leave me alone for a few extra months. My dad does the same. When this policy began I downgraded from 4 screens to a lower plan now paying half for the same access so thanks I guess for their dumb limitation.

It's really not that hard to understand. Taking something away that people have had for a long time while continually raising prices is gonna make people upset.

You’re neither entitled to something you don’t pay for, nor are you entitled to get it at a low price you choose. You don’t go to a grocery store and say “hey these prices went up, so I’m just going to steal this food” do you?

Because grown people don’t assume that the work of all the people who work on all these shows has no value. If you “just pirate” because you aren’t allowed to steal by pretending to be in someone else’s home, you are slapping the faces of every writer, production person, actor, artist, costumer, etc. and saying that you don’t think they deserve a living at all.

If you think that being expected to pay for things others make and do is being “treated like a criminal” then you have a fundamental misunderstanding of the concept of property. Don’t take things that you don’t buy, and don’t steal them if you can’t afford them. Period.

Suggestion. Become the CEO of HBO and then you can set your own policies and deal with the Board of Directors. Until then, stop pretending it's OK to steal the service. I've never heard so many lame and totally bogus reasons for stealing the signal as in this forum. If you can't afford the service under their rules, then don't steal. You can getter better paying job or ask you parents for the money. Simple.
If I was the CEO of HBO I would focus on providing some quality content and stop worrying about families sharing an account.
