Lol you’re better off subscribing to cable. At least they consistently rip you off AND provide reliability. Tech companies have ruined TV.

Reading this, and it just occurred to me there's a good chance the app will crash tonight during the finale of White Lotus, which is another indictment of HBO and streaming (not that White Lotus is even nearly as popular as Mare of Easttown or Game of Thrones, either.

They should also force every channel to tie in with the TV app. I regularly forget about stuff in Netflix because it doesn't show up on my home screen the way things from HBO, Disney+, Hulu and Apple TV+ do.
I wish every app integrated with the TV app, but I feel if they required that then they would just remove TVOS support altogether since Apple TV is such a small market compared to Amazon, Roku and Google streaming sticks.

What am I missing? The app seems fine to me. Unless I'm getting a different app in my region. The old HBO Go app was actual trash though.
For starters, the FF/RW/Pause functions are broken. Try forwarding or rewinding through a show and see what happens. For many of us it suddenly has a mind of its own. I paused a movie yesterday and it resumed at a point almost 10 minutes before I paused it. If I try to FF or RW something it suddenly gets a mind of its own and becomes almost impossible to get where I want to be.

I'll try it later, thanks.

How about the bug that HBO Max is only available in the US?

My guess it's a licensing / revenue split issue. To roll out everywhere might require renegotiating various rights so it simply isn't worth it.

But but but everyone said when we can cut the cable and get just the services we want it'll be better and cheaper...

I'd like an easy way to go to the paused location after you go forward or backward so you can pick up right where you left off after swiping through.

“By end of year?”
Oof. I run this app on AppleTV, Roku and my year old Vizio. On all three it consistently performs like hot garbage.
time to fix your priorities, HBO, and your app.

"We're going to replace every single connected TV app in the next four or five months," said an unnamed WarnerMedia exec.
“Yeah, right” said every WarnerMedia dev.

I'm curious what specific issues folks are experiencing. I'm experiencing two distinct issues:

  1. Sound, no picture: After the Apple TV has been off overnight, in the morning when I load Sling and start playing a channel, I hear the channel's sound but don't see the video. I have to force quit Sling for it to work.
  2. Crash within 5 minutes: When Sling starts playing, it plays the channel for 3-5 minutes, then stops playing and goes back to the Sling Home Screen.
What is weird here, is I have 3 Apple TV devices, and one experiences issues #1 and the other two experience issues #2. I would think there would be a consistency in the error and that they would not experience different problems. It's puzzling.

I guess I’m just lucky. I haven’t had any of these problems people are describing. My ⏪ and ⏩ work fine and haven’t experienced any crashes while watching anything. 🤞🏼

I experience some of the bugs on HBO Max, but it isn’t quite as bad as the abomination that AT&T TV Now is. I’ve just gotten used to launching that app, pressing a button, then waiting 20 seconds for it to actually respond. It always makes me feel like I’m using Windows 95.

Unless they add live feeds to the app, I’m not subscribing again after the Channels debacle.

Netflix would absolutely pull their app and Apple knows it. And Netflix has the upper hand here.

A Netflix-less Apple TV would hurt Apple TV sales far more than it would hurt Netflix.

You are correct, and yet I often even forget I have Netflix, despite being a subscriber for years. Every so often I think, I should cancel this, but then I see something like The Queen's Gambit and they buy themselves (apparently) another year. My primary reason for keeping it is that guests expect it.

100% agree.

YouTube, Twitch, the new Beachbody on Demand, etc. They clearly violate tvOS' design guidelines.
Twitch is a hot mess on all platforms, it's not just tvOS.

Youtube's redesign baffles me. Oy, why is the subscriptions tab at the end of the content list? And WHY does the app have to be 20 ticks higher in volume than every other apple TV app?

Fortunately, I have not had any issues with the HBO max Apple TV app. It has worked flawlessly so far. Also, watching on 2 other devices besides Apple TV and it syncs correctly. Sound quality could be better. So far nothing beats Amazon prime video for sound quality for me.

I actually haven’t had any problems with the app since the June debacle. My bigger issue is that HBO still doesn’t offer 4K HDR content 😒

Disney could do with fixing their crap TV app as well, running that on the Apple TV 4K and the damn thing locks up in the main menu just browsing content or even changing your avatar on occasion, and it has a habit of logging out of your account at random, could be in a few days or a few weeks. Absolute pain in the ass.

No Apple TV app is perfect. The sad thing is that HBO Max is one of the better Apps. It's easier to navigate than Apple TV+ and is also cleaner than Netflix. I haven't found a streaming App that is without flaws. I just wish Youtube wasn't so terrible. It's one of my most used Apps on my Apple TV.
