Anyone aware if you would still be able to get HBO as an Apple TV channel?

The 2012 3rd gen Apple TV has 512MB of memory and a single-core A5 professor, putting it on the same performance level as a 2010 iPhone 4. I’m surprised it still works at all.
Because it can still run a 1080p stream, that's why.

I saw the warning recently on my AppleTV 3rd gen that HBO GO would be unsupported so I went ahead and got the current 4K. The 4K supports AirPlay direct (no WiFi required) so there was an additional reason for me to upgrade as this is a feature I plan to use often.

I’ll probably pick up an additional AppleTV if they upgrade soon, as I was looking to get another one as well.

I’ve actually been quite happy that the 3rd gen has stayed relevant this long.

Different topic altogether but in regards to future Apple TV upgrades or being afraid to upgrade currently... not sure what will be added next. If you use it purely for streaming then the current model should be more than fine for the time being.

I’d imagine the next edition would have more power for those who play games on their device, but I would assume (perhaps incorrectly) that most people on this site interested in gaming have a dedicated gaming machine.

The current box supports 4K, Dolby atmos, has good upscaling. Not sure personally what else would be expected, though for myself I’d prefer a better remote.

Especially as many have switched to the Apple TV for network televison, it can be a pain to scroll though an entire program guide on YouTube tv/ATT TV/whatever to select a particular network.

It probably struggles to downsample 4K, or handle h265 streams. Again - this is an 8 year old device. It has a single core A5 with 10 year old iPhone performance levels. It’s highly unusual to support such old hardware.

Why? Is online retail being shut down as well?
According to new data by the National Multifamily Housing Council and a variety of real-estate data providers, nearly one third of the US didn't pay rent in April after losing their income due to COVID-19. Suffice to say people are probably trying to pay bills and aren't buying the latest AppleTV streaming device

It’s not a bad point. HBO is $15 per month.
And yet having HBO isn’t a necessity for people that don’t have jobs anymore due to a dangerous pandemic

It's not like theres only people well-off enough to buy new streaming devices during a pandemic or those who are completely broke.

I'd say I'm in the middle where buying a new AppleTV is not in the budget while I'm losing out on 1/3 of my income, however, I can maintain most of my subscription entertainment for the time being.

It doesn't have to be both extremes...

I agree that the timing is awful.

HBO ideally shouldn't do this until after the pandemic is winding down. Of course, when would that be? In a year? All to support 8-10 year old single core devices?

I tried selling a 3rd gen Apple TV on Craigslist in January for $20. No takers. I ended up giving it away for free just to prevent it going to a landfill. It looks like Apple TV 4K models are still going for at least $120 secondhand in eBay, so there does appear to be a big gap in the middle.

That gap is filled by the reasonably priced devices from Amazon, Google, and Roku that are current and not 8 years old. That's the position Apple puts it's users in.

Well the Amazon and Google products are subsidized by selling your data to advertisers, so they’d damn well better be cheap.

I couldn’t be happier with my Apple TV 4K. Superb 4K 60p interface, very powerful and snappy, great software support. Everything works incredibly well, integrated into our phones, tablets and computers seamlessly with a very high level of polish. Well worth the extra bit of money in my opinion.

It’s great to have competition though, agree with you there!

Will HBO Max be available as an Apple Channel? Seems like an easy way to keep supporting the older Apple TV’s.

The Apple TV app support is a tad glitchy on the 3rd Gen hardware last time I tried it. The audio in 'For All Mankind' would go out of sync with the video feed.

Was checking my ATV3 to see which modules work and finding several no longer connect or work.
This is why I never buy smart TVs. Still using my 15+ yr old Sony KDF tv via hdmi which has outlived several LCD TVs. Time to toss my ATV3 and get a 4 to use on this tv until ATV4 is at EOL.

This so much. Other devices aren't cheaper but you're just paying in a different way. Some people don't mind this so maybe it's better for them

Agreed. In my case, I DO have ample income. But I'm more inclined to spend as much as I can to help the economy; which in the current situation, means small businesses in jeopardy, not giant corporations with ample access to cash.
While I understand your feeling on supporting small buisnesses and do the same saying giant corporations with ample access to cash isn't exactly accurate. The numbers are bigger but it's just scaled up. Joe small business owner might not have a half mil in the account but he also doesn't have 100k rent due this month. This even applies to individuals. If you look at people making 200k + sometimes they are no better financially than people making 20k. Instead of a $200 car payment they have a $1200 car payment, instead of $400 a month rent they're paying $2500 for a mortgage. I'm not saying you need to feel sorry for them but just that their financial situation can go south just as fast. The same with big corporations.

As the owner of an ATV3, it is sad to see it lose support, though it has been 8 years. Oh well. Hopefully someone will hack it to run kodi. Lets hope Apple releases a new box soon to replace the HD.

This wouldn’t be a problem if Apple would finally make a streaming stick in the $50-$80 space.
Current gen Apple TV‘s are outrageously overpriced for what they do and the market they are a part of.

How about a stick/dongle form factor and BT remote styled like pre Siri Remote version?

So many of us just want to stream and Airplay...and that’s it

C'mon Apple - you LOVE Dongles...
Could we please have a basic Apple TV Dongle?

How *dare* you try to apply common sense and a moderate opinion in an argument on the Internet! The nerve of some people! ;-)

Stay safe and healthy out there!

I'm dying for the next AppleTV. We have 2 of the ATV3 but they do not support the app store and thus I cannot buy Disney+ yet. But isn't it amazing that they support AppleTV+ that just launched a few months ago? Hmmmm. Thanks, Apple for being able to push your "update" to me that is a new app for a new streaming service but I can't get the Disney+ app.

I am definitely NOT gonna buy an ATV right now because the current model is over 3 years old.

Whenever you are ready, Apple, I'm waiting with credit card in hand (and 3 bouncy kids!)
