i am so dumb.

My backup is restored and everything appears to be intact. I used the Migration Assistant, and there were no errors generated. How did this miracle occur? When I installed the OS in on the new drive, I used the user name that it suggested, instead of my original user name. To get the backup to be accessible, I simply created a new user with the original credentials, and everything worked as advertised after that.

I couldn't figure out how I had access to the NAS and could work on the sparsebundle - to an extent - by sending the NAS admin credentials to it, but I could not move, copy or open the sparsebundle. So I guess the lesson learned here is to look for the simple explanation before trying brain surgery.

Another lesson learned, even though the TM backup isn't corrupted as I'd first feared, I had no redundancy on it. My NAS was set to RAID 0 for maximum capacity, and so a bad disk in it potentially kills the lot. I referred to my backup as Schrodinger's Backup earlier, because you don't know if it's alive or dead until you open the box (not my line, btw). I'm going to clear out a bunch of movies I don't watch (I have the disks if I ever need them again) to shrink the size of my backup, reformat to RAID 1 (or RAID 10, I am not sure which yet, suggestions appreciated) and then start a new TM from there.

I appreciate everyone's help and advice above. You were all giving me good suggestions, it's just that I wasn't identifying the problem correctly.
