I have a question for those with the adapter. When you watch a movie via iTunes or Netflix does the display on you iPad stay on or does it shut off while the movie is playing on your tv?

It goes black only displaying the video controls. Almost exactly how air play does.

If you don't mind trying could you see if hitting the power button on your iPad turns the display off but keeps the movie playing? Thank you in advance.

I will try today. But I'm pretty sure if you can't turn it off completely, that's the reason apple included the ability to charge the iPad at the same time.

I am thinking in terms if I am watching a movie or tv show I don't want the iPad screen lit up next to my tv when it is dark.

Oh I see what your saying. Ill let you know. But from what I remember the screen was a black screen with iPod controls so it shouldn't be too much of a distraction. If it is I'd just put my case or something over it. I'll let you know soon.

Thank you very much, I look forward to hearing!

Hey man I just checked and I locked the screen and the video paused. Unlocked it and The video just resumed. But the screen isn't distracting at all.

Thanks for checking that out. I guess the easiest solution is just cover the screen and disable smart cover lock if need be.

Hey I was just checking Video from the video app and our able to lock it. But not in air video. So I guess it varies between apps.

How come audio was coming from Ipad and not Tv? HDMI is supposed to transmit both Video and Audio

Sorry to answer so late!! I have no idea it seems to work with other things. Such as YouTube videos and although i haven't tried I'm going to presume Netflix as well. But for some reason I got nothing with FaceTime??

Is there a solution for this?

I've noticed the same. GarageBand audio did not go through to the tv. Yet everything else I tried did.

All those with the HDMI adapter a few questions...

1) does the sound go through your TV speakers or stay on the iPad? Does that vary by app too?

2) Have you tried it on the iPhone4? Does that allow video and audio too or just video?

I haven't tried every app, obviously, but tried a couple of games and the audio was output via HDMI and came through my TV's speakers.

Thanks for that. I am really interested in Netflix, would love to play that off my iPhone4 :) on my TV.

The iPad 2 is the only device that the hdmi mirrors the image. For the iPhone 4 and other devices you can only output a video once it has started on the phone.

Ordered from apple because best buy sucked last year with accessories last year at launch. I'm hoping it's awesome. I need to check out monoprice for a
16ft cable.
Unless you absolutely need 16ft, Amazon has a 15ft cable for $7.07 (scout around, longer lengths too - also equally good pricing.) I've already bought some of these cheapo cables in shorter lengths, no problems from our Bluray or cable box, don't doubt this will work fine too. I should have the cable today and my adapter arrives Wednesday so I'll check it out then, unfortunately only on iPad 1 - but I just want to be able to see our own videos in high quality on the TV at this point.

Yeah, audio is sent over HDMI.

The iPhone works just like before with the other video adapter. No mirroring. Only the iPad 2 does that.

Used it last night to watch two Comedy Central shows via Netflix. the first one was boxed in a 4:3 ratio. The second one was 16:9 and filled the screen. Not sure if it was 720p or 1080p. However for $19, I was very happy with the little adapter. :)

i thought it was $39 ?

Yeah it can't do full screen 16:9 because the ipad is 4:3. It wont look right stretched.

I have read that the ipad can do video out in 16:9 depending on if the app supports it and the resolution of the original material. Has anyone tried this? How does it work?

16:9 works fine on my tv using cinexplayer's output-to-tv button. I get a decent edge to edge video on my 42" plasma tv.

I am also using the hdmi adapter on an iPad 1.. Not sure how it would work with video mirroring -- would it letterbox it to reflect the actual image you are seeing on your ipad 2 or would it snap it to the full tv screen if you enlarge the imiage on your iPad 2..?

Dylan,

Not sure if it was a question or a statement but Netflix works just fine using the hdmi cable. I just finished watching a movie as a matter of fact. A great option for hotels if you are traveling and they have a tv that lets you plug in an HDMI device.

The quality isnt great. I'm not sure if my internet speed isn't high def levels or the Netlfix app itself doesn't let you suck down full HD quality video. Definitely serviceable though -- just decidedly standard definition (or slightly worse) looking.

I'm still going to save the big blockbusters for watching on blu-ray -- but for catching a random movie on the road or an episode of a tv show it's quite serviceable. :)

Cinca, was that on your iPhone or iPad?
Just video correct?

I bought one just for the heck of it. I haven't really used it for much except to test it out.

I tried garageband with the hdmi adapter and only the video is transmitted to my tv. Audio is still coming from the ipad. Can someone else test this for me?
