How is this snake oil? I’m able to play it on my LG OLED.
He is just being dramatic. Clearly Apple has some issues to work out with regards to AirPlaying Dolby Vision to an Apple TV but it’s really not the nefarious plot some people are making it out to be.

Edit: I rest my case re: Dramatic.
WE HAVE A WINNER FOLKS!!! THE FIRST PERSON ON THE PLANET WHO CAN STREAM DOLBY VISION TO THEIR LG OLED VIA AIRPLAY USING APPLE TV 4K FROM THEIR IPHONE 12?!?!?!? PLEASE TELL US HOW!!!!!!!! OMG

This is a software issue so Apple will solve it no doubt. It's certainly no the first time that Apple advertises something that is false, we as a long standing Apple product users should know that. More serious offense are all those iPhone underwater posters inside the stores, now that's a true red flag advertising.

I have the same problems as everyone else. But I also cant even get HDR videos off of my phone. Airdrop to my MacBook Pro seriously downgrades the quality and, syncing my phone (wired) still exports videos that look nothing like the HDR video recorded on my phone. I first noticed the problem when I text an HDR video to a friend. I dont care if HDR videos cant be sent via sms but the quality looks horrid. incredibly washed out and more like 720p than 4k. How has anyone been able to export an HDR video that even resembles similar quality as the video recorded on the phone. Every "HDR" video that a watch on any other device than my phone looks horrendous.

I'd say we should all contact Apple support about this and ask how exactly we are supposed to play videos recorded on iPhone 12 in Dolby Vision. Or at the very least, let them know this is an issue.

So far, the only way for me to play the videos are via USB drive and on the native TV software (built-in LG video player). Problem is that these videos are NOT in Dolby Vision but rather in HLG HDR. I have not seen a single person claiming to be able to play them in DV format (running ATV4k always in DV and playing these videos is not the same thing and it's wrong)

Btw; Dolby Vision HLG HDR (read here at link1, link2, link3)

I talked to apple support last week and this is the follow up response I received yesterday. I already told him everything he is asking about and im not trying to share with apps. I am just trying to get an HDR video to show on, my computer or my LG C9, as it looks on my phone. I have Apple TV 4k and Nvidia Shield, but still havent seen an HDR quality video on any device besides the phone.

Perhaps my biggest complaint is how bad the quality of an HDR video is when texting the video to someone. I don't care if it doesnt send an HDR video via text but the video looks like its being compressed to something like 720p. This basically forces you to chose if you want to record an HDR video that you might be able to watch on some device at some point in the future or if you want to record a normal 4k video that you can actually share with someone.

Doesn’t the iPhone screen support dolby vision? Don’t know how iPhone Dolby vision compare to LG oled etc.

who wants to bet that Apple will force us to buy a new Apple Tv once its announced (possibly today) in order to stream the DV vids from our phones because the new Apple TV will be the best Apple TV ever.

I followed this workflow and played files on my LG OLEDB9-65 using the native player.
The screen signalled it played "Dolby Vision" and it looked good, however I experienced that the colors "flickered" a bit. Like if the DV metadata was lost during very short periods.
I also exported an edited movie from iMove in my iPhone12Pro and that also played as "Dolby Vision"

Might as well go buy a Roku. They updated their FW and Airplay 2 plays HDR video I took on my iPhone as HDR on my LG E6. I don't have the newest ROKU which also does Dolby Vision HDR, so I don't know if that works, but on my Roku Ultra, it triggers HDR on my tv. Embarrassing that Roku can do it, but an Apple streaming device can not.

First time I read someone being able to play it in DV format. Would you mind sharing this screen on your LG?

You can access this information while playing on the native LG player - shows up when switching more options on the buttons below.

It doesn’t work The native LG player doesn’t play them with the DV metadata.

I’ve tried all ways and the only way I can play is to export the files (copy to iCloud and then copy to my NAS) and then play on the nvidia shield in kodi/plex. These are both using the recently updated exoplayer.

Just did this with an HDR vid 4k60FPS I took yesterday on my 12 pro. Played it on my LG 2017 65" and I have to say I was blown away by the quality. I can only imagine what Dolby vision would look like.

It would look the same pretty much.

There is actually a very easy way to playback Dolby Vision (DV) video shot on the new iPhone 12 lineup to the LG TVs (e.g. C9 OLED) that support DV.

Just download the LG TV Plus app from the App Store - https://apps.apple.com/in/app/lg-tv-plus/id838611484

Connect to your TV (both phone and TV must be on same WiFi network - preferably 5 Ghz with a strong strength).

Then simply playback the DV video from within the app to the TV. It'll play in the DV mode, and you'll see the familiar DV logo pop in from the top right when the video starts playing.

In my experience, this is the best pay to playback video shot on the iPhone to the LG TV. The recent TVs may support Airplay 2, but even with a high end router the quality is poor, and there is plenty of stutter. Whereas from this app, everything plays without a hitch and in great quality, as if the file was being played locally via a USB stick.

Tested on an iPhone 12 Pro Max and a 65" LG C9 OLED.

I actually tried that app the other day. I could not get it to play anything from my phone to my TV at all. How do I set it up?

What app (If any) does the TV itself need to be on for me to share from my phone?

EDIT. I actually got it to work. For me the video plays as HLG HDR but better than nothing. Maybe it's because I'm on a C8. Still, pretty cool to be able to play the HDR videos from my phone to my TV in SOME way at least.
