Those 9 people can properly stream their 10bit HLG or HDR10 videos on any HDR TV while millions of iPhone 12 users can't unless they have Apple TV :)

This is the issue: you can Airplay the iphone 12 HDR video to any TV that supports Airplay but the file is metacoded to play in SDR if DV is not supported and you can bet your house that your TV doesn't support Dolby Vision profile 8.4 yet and no one knows if it ever will. The only way to play native HLG file without DV gimmick (Profile 8.4 is a super light profile that puts color graded HLG file into DV pipeline using gamma, nothing spectacular and has nothing to do with image or HDR quality) is to copy the file from iPhone to NAS or USB and then play it on your HDR TV.
The problem is Apple advertised it as record on new iphone and play on your dolby vision enabled TV thru air play on apple tv4k..... its not a true statement. No one can get it to work on any TV that has DV using Air Play.. therefore Apple misled and has yet to provide an answer. Thats like saying Hey new iphone has magsafe and then nobody can connect the magsafe charger to the back if the new iphones... they arezboth touted features of a new product but only one of them works as advertised.

Well some existing DV decoders will eventually be updated to profile 8.4 but most of them won't be. It's a new profile suitable for broadcast/real time workflow and thus why apple picked it up despite having a lot more horsepower in that A chip for something a lot better, imho.

Apple could have easily let the phone stream in graded HLG HDR if phone haven't read DV decoder on HDR endabled panel but they've chosen to stream in SDR instead. For reasons only known to them.

My tv is a 2017 LG. I have an Apple TV 4K that set for Dolby vision. Will I be able to stream Dolby vision videos from my 12 pro?

Nope - the “workaround” that some places mention, as in keep your ATV4K in Dolby Vision mode all the time (bad idea!) is not actually a workaround.

The only way I have been able to properly view the Dolby Vision files is by:

1) Record video (of course!)
2) Goto camera roll and select videos
3) Copy videos to FILES (anywhere else, seems to convert them - not what you want)
4) Goto files and then copy wherever you want to play them (i.e. copy to a NAS or USB)
5) Play them on an NVIDIA Shield Pro (2019) inside of Kodi or Via Plex

Nothing else works for me - saw some people mention they can play using LG‘s native video player, doesn’t work for me on my GX, tells me video is unsupported, so not sure how it works for some that way.

PS. The video’s DO look stunning!

The non-Pro is limited to 30 FPS when filming in 4K Dolby Vision HDR. Is it boosted to 60 FPS when filming at 1080p?

Don't think so. It's a marketing cut off not technological one since both phones are pretty much the same. But there is a catch when filming 60fps on any iPhone or mobile phone in general it looks worse than 30fps. On 60fps each frame is only half way exposed compared to 30fps, it's a trade off between performance and quality.

Thank you, I didn't know the part about the quality! The 30/60FPS difference is not due to the RAM difference?

Pretty far off from Apple's press release of " And just simply Air Play them to your connected Apple TV4K device and compatible TV"... what a joke.

Using one of the videos uploaded here I was able to play on my LG C7 with Plex. It toggled ”HLG HDR”, which is what all dolby vision-videos on youtube trigger on same TV.
Does anybody know if I’m getting the full quality when watching in HLG HDR or if it’s comparable to HDR10?

iPhone 12 shoots in HLG format so you are getting the native quality.

I don't know if this is an issue per se, but I'll put it out there as an FYI:

On my phone I still have "Most compatible" format selected for video and photos, but if you use HDR in video, it forces you to use High Efficiency for at least video while HDR is turned on. Although it says "4K 30 will take about 190 MB per minute", in my testing, it was more like 280 MB per minute.

Perhaps those estimates don't factor in having HDR on. But I thought I would mention it.

Is there any way we can get this issue on the front page of mac Rumors so maybe just maybe someone at Apple sees it and realizes the snake oil that got sold with the iPhone 12?

How is this snake oil? I’m able to play it on my LG OLED.
