This is confusing. When I see the words '2g original iPhone' I think of the first one that ran on AT&T's 2g network (edge) with the silver back. Is that what you're talking about? If so I really doubt people are finding replacement parts for 40 bucks. The glass and LCD is fused on that model, like on the iPhone 4, and are pretty expensive. Also the glass is a major pita to replace. If you can find someone to swap out the glass on one of those for $120 I say do it and send the boy an invoice. I charge over $200 for that repair and absolutely hate doing it.

Carboysdesire/OP,

I understand exactly how you feel. I'm still using the ORIGINAL "father of all iPhones" iPhone. I skipped the 3G and 3Gs because it was more of a facelift than evolution. My iPhone 4 arrives tomorrow, hand carried by a friend. Friends have been asking me "So what are you going to do with your old iPhone?" "Keep it, in my little Apple museum."

Actually, I'd put it in a heavy duty anti drop case and let my parents use it, but the speakerphone on the original iPhone sucks, and that's a key feature they need.

Have the husband fix the phone on his side money.... hehe. Let him decide on what phone he wants and let him buy it himself, this way you decrease any type of heartache related to iPhones.

J

I know at least twelve people in Dallas that swap iPhone screens. It's such a simple and straight forward process. It's such a quick way to make $50. But I don't touch iPhones, I keep to Macs. The competition for iPhone repair here is just too steep.

I'm getting used to the idea of just letting it go.

I've called several places today and the lowest price is $100. The 3G models they can all fix for $50 but the original iPhone is a different animal and they want to be compensated for the headache.

Maybe I'll go put $20 in a slot machine this weekend. If I win $100 or more I'll fix it. If I lose, which is more likely, I'll let it be.

I approve of this decision.

Is there any need to get it repaired except having it as a back up?

OP, hope you get your screen fixed, I really liked keeping my 2G pristine, but now its not, I think the aluminium wears the dings and scars really well, much better than a iP4 would :p

Fix an old, outdated, slow, iPhone for $120.

Purchase the newest, fastest, best iPhone 4 for ~ $199.

We can't tell you, but its up to you if the upgrade to the best and latest iPhone on the market is worth the $80 to you.

I'd say yes, jump on it.
Not much point into spending $10000 rebuilding the engine on a 1974 Gremlin when you can buy a new car with warranty for a little bit more.

Sorry about your original iPhone, OP. :(

My son has his original 1st gen iPhone... still. He's toying with the idea of getting an iPhone 4, but hasn't yet because he doesn't want to give up his first one.

He gets sentimental about stuff like that. He's still got my old first gen, blue iPod mini. He's a collector, I reckon.

So... living with someone who is like that (yeah, he's 20 and in college, but at least he takes his little brother and sister to school so they don't have to ride the bus :D), I guess I can relate.

I think your hubby needs to pay to get your phone fixed. I cannot believe he didn't volunteer!

Its becouse on a 2G original modal the Digitizer/Glass is glued on the LCD screen. So u need to replace it as one part. on 3g modals its seperated and u can replace just the digitizer/glass screen

wow some of you guys have issues that this forum really can't deal with

a) make your husband apologize
b) sounds like it's not cost effective to repair
c) have him tale you out to a nice dinner or event to make up for it

D) MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIFE

My brain is telling me exactly this, but my heart says to pay up and fix it.

Actually, HE should pay up and fix it, or at the very least say he's sorry he dropped it, which he didn't do.

It's my fault for trusting him with it, I know. :(

It's the silliest thing that a phone I haven't used in over a year is giving me grief. Perhaps in time I'll learn to accept it, thanks. It's as if someone died or something, LOL.

Your the woman in the relationship right? he is the " man " right? cause usually guys care about electronics not women.

I really wasn't expecting all the helpful replies so thanks to everyone for those. I mostly wanted to vent, but there's been some good help here. I'll let you know how it turns out. It's funny that this 3 year old phone has warranted this much discussion.

Picture of you being a woman or else your not a woman.

I know this will be nothing more than a "cool story, bro" thread to most, but dammit, I need to vent.

I still love and cherish my original 2G iPhone, and it was hard to part with it when I upgraded to the 3GS last year. I kept it pristine and in its original box until 3 months ago when I gave it to my husband who expressed interest in getting an iPhone. At the time the 4's were not out yet and I said it made no sense to buy a 3GS when the 4's were imminent. I suggested he use my original until the 4s came out. Worse decision ever.

The 4s came out and life is busy so we hadn't gotten around to getting a 4 yet.

He broke it. Yesterday, he arrived home at 7 pm from the gym and was talking and unloading his bag at the same time when I heard a smack onto the tile floor. I knew instantly what it was.

"Did you just break my phone?"

"Dammit...I broke it. And I was doing so well too."

Yeah, so well. I didn't drop it in the two years I had it and he drops it after three months, shattering the glass, and he thinks he was doing well.

I've called around. I can get it fixed locally in 15 minutes, for $120. The guy on the phone said the original's parts are getting scarce because it's obsolete.

Does this sound right?

Should I fix it?

I love that iPhone so much I may take it back and give my husband my 3GS to break. For some reason, it means nothing to me.

Its just a cell phone. And because the glass is cracked, you have to replace the front assembly. Its not worth it. Sell it on ebay for parts. Being mad at your husband over a phone... not worth it. Also not normal to be obsessed over a gadget.

lol, I can relate. My brother gave me his org iPhone bc he upgraded to a 3gs and I had just discoverd podcasts and videos. HOLY COW:eek::eek: it was awesome. By the end of the week I had left Sprint and turned on the phone.

I kept it for about 5 months until the 4 came out. I still have it and use it as an iPod on my home tuner.

I should have sold it but I just cant part with it!!! My gf wanted me to donate it to some charity thing, I ended up donating something else and put my iPhone on the never throw away list

This has turned from a “help, my husband dropped my iPhone!!!” thread to a “its okay to be gay ;)” thread.

Shut up and get on topic people.

If Jobs reads this, he will most likely shed a magical and revolutionary tear.

Okay.. it's just a phone. I can see why you're upset, but paying that much money for such an outdated piece of hardware is pointless. At this point, you can by the iPhone 4 with $80.

Anyway, if you look around, I'm sure you'll find the same iPhone for around the same price, that hasn't been dropped by your husband, yet ;)

Fix it and close the thread. Never understood why people get so bent over a freaking phone. You act as if it's a classic car that's WORTH SOMETHING or a sentimental item that can't be replaced. If you love it that much cough it up and fix the dang thing then start rethinking your priorities in life. My wife means more to me than any damn phone or material thing that I own.
