From what I see, when you use BT headphones with the ATV4, the speaker output is muted and that's it.

Obviously if you connect headphones to other outputs (receivers, TV), it's a different story. I have a headphone adapter connected to the audio out on my TV and others can listen or not (mute TV).

Using the built in ATV4 functionality, I believe there's only one option: headphones or speaker.

Thanks, that's what I suspected. Do you know if you can connect a second pair of bluetooth headphones simultaneously or a pair of headphones and a bluetooth soundbar?

I'm here looking for options to see if I can upgrade, as my current setup involves using the optical audio out, which ATV4 doesn't have any more.

The users guide is the usual wishy-washy self about multiple BT devices. It says 'or' a lot. I don't know if you can use multiple BT, headphones and sound bar, two headphones at the same time, choose one, etc. I think that will need someone to either test or call Apple.

I'm pretty sure that it works the same way all iDevices work. That is, you can connect multiple bluetooth sound output devices at once -- I can have Bluetooth speakers and headphones all connecting to the same iPad at the same time. But when it comes to playing sound, you have to pick one audio device to output the sound to. You can quickly switch between the sound devices, but you can't output sound to two, devices at the same time.

This sounds right, as you can also output sound to one of any AirPlay/other ATV's on the network. I'd assume any one device. Which then makes the headphones and speakers at the same time a problem.

Just bought the new Apple TV, paired my Bose wireless headphones to it, works perfectly with no lags.

What Bose headphones are you using? I was looking at getting the Bose Soundlink II wireless headphones, but I'm concerned about lag.

I'm using $10 Bluetooth headphones (after coupon) I got from Amazon and have no problems with lag. I've tried two different cheap BT headphones as well as Bose Soundlink Mini II BT speakers. All the BT devices I've tried so far with great success have been BT 4.0 or higher. I totally love this feature.

Just to add, I have Parrot Zik 2.0 headphones and they work without noticeable lag. I haven't tried my cheap headphones with it.

It's an on-ear SoundLink headphone. I don't know the exact model number. But I'm sure any of the Bose bluetooth headphones will work fine. Bose didn't make bluetooth headphones until quite recently, so they should all have the latest bluetooth technology that doesn't cause lags.

Does anyone else experience significant lag using Blue tooth headphones? I have an old pair of Sony headphones that I've paired with my ATV4, and when streaming video, I am constantly getting the spinning wheel.

I've tried different servers, different kinds of streams, different files types and encodes with the same spinning wheel results. I'm trying to narrow down whether it's old headphones or if I'm having network trouble.

You should use newer headphones with Bluetooth 4.0, such as the Bose Soundlink II, which are fantastic.

I use Bose Quiet Comfort 25 noise cancelling headphones connected either to an Airport Express or more often my Sony Smart Handset for Bluetooth. Because noise cancelling headphones use their own amplifier, a bigger Bluetooth such as Bose's Aptx adaptor isn't going to provide an advantage with Apple TV.
