Higher ETF? Crappier Data plans?

ATT knows the end is coming, they're going to try and lock you in while they're the only ones to hold the new iPhone. You're going to be much less apt to switch to a different carrier when you have a $325 ETF lingering over your head, but the better network potential and better data plans are going to be smacking you in the face when the time comes.

I'm hanging tight without getting any upgrades from ATT so I don't fall victim to these new changes. I'm buying my phones retail from now on until all this crap settles down. :)

How so? They made similar changes last year as far as everyone upgrades for the 3GS and the iPhone did not leave AT&T.

But definitely not as extensive. I got a launch 3G in July 2008 and didn't qualify for the 3GS last year fully (only partial discount) due to not paying >$100. Only reason I ended up getting one was my 3G being stolen.

I'm pretty torn as to whether to extend my contract myself. If VZN comes this fall I'd kick myself, and even next summer would require paying a good ETF.

Retail cost is so high though you don't really save anything over buying at $299 and paying the full ETF. If you could get 3G from another US carrier, sure but that's not the case.

I do wonder though...chances are very very good Verizon will NOT offer unlimited plans when they finally do get the iPhone. As long as AT&T keeps me grandfathered, that might be what keeps me tied over an ETF. Meh.

why does everyone ASSUME Apple is upset with AT&T? I'm pretty sure Apple knows the coverage issues have a lot to do with their device and don't completely fault AT&T's network...AT&T has carried water for Apple for three years...that's loyalty...I'm sure Apple will remember this

I send an SMS To: *639#, or *NEW# with a blank space in the message, then press Send, it sends it, and nothing comes back. ????

I think you need to dial it, not SMS it. At least thats what I did, and got an immediate reply back saying I was eligible.

Verizon has had a $300+ ETF for a little while now and AT&T is allowing you to keep your unlimited plan if you want to.

If the iPhone goes to VZ or Tmobile in September or next year do you magically think they are going to offer unlimited data points at a much cheaper price point?

People act like At&T is the only carrier doing these things.....

No I'm not saying they're the only carrier doing this all I'm saying is they're the only carrier to offer the iPhone right now but once it opens up to other carriers people are going to jump ship like crazy. Anyone who is on Verizon doesn't care about the ETF because they're completely satisfied with their service. The only reason people I know have ever left VZW was for the iPhone. ATT has that advantage right now but once it's gone they know they're going to lose customers due to their service. This is just their way of ensuring they either a) keep people longer or b) get compensated for it somewhat.

This is simple marketing for AT&T.

If it didn't cost AT&T much money, I would agree, but to offer another subsidy to customers that just got a $400 subsidy as recently as 6 months ago is costing AT&T a lot of money.

sometimes...when we really really want something to happen...almost everything is precieved as a sign of it coming to fruition...2012

I hope you were agreeing w/ me as my post stated it didn't necessarily indicate a new carrier.

Because of the responses Jobs gave at All Things D.

I'm not sure why people think Apple is upset at AT&T. I think it's more like people want them to be. Quite honestly all cell phone providers have issues.

The carrier i experienced the most dropped calls with is Verizon. In fact that there is an underground parking garage that i make calls in sometime. And the only provider that gets signal there is AT&T. ;

I have a feeling that the iPhone may never go to another carrier.

I didn't sense much animosity in that interview and Jobs is very transparent...I like how the Verizon rumors were put to sleep just this Monday only to be revived less than a week later...LOL

All cell carriers have issues, VZ included. To say they don't or imply that VZ customers don't care about ETF because they are completely satisfied with their service is foolish....

I wouldn't say they've been put to sleep. Anybody truly paying attention would realize that a Verizon iPhone this summer was highly unlikely.

I wouldn't call it animosity as much as dissappointed or not happy.

He basically aknowledged the network issues and said that "he's been told" that it's supposed to get better by the end of this summer, but that it will also get worse before it gets better. He didn't seem to happy at all when he was talking about this part. A lot of his answers were short and seemed like he almost didn't believe it himself.

I didn't take that from the interview...what I got from it was that he's tired of answering questions about it and also that he didn't think it was as bad as everyone makes it out to be....so tell me Geckoteck will there be a Verizon iPhone this fall? before 2012?

Hmmm...perhaps that was it.

My guess, fall is a stretch. I'm hopeful but wouldn't bet on it. Before 2012?....dunno. I'd have to see something more substantial than we have today. I do think the report that Pegatron was getting orders for an iPhone was interesting. Wondering if that was just blatantly wrong or what.....

I think it was just misinformation....with all these different retailers set to sell iPhone 4 at launch I think thats the justification for Apple ordering large amounts of devices this year

Yeah, but Pegatron? That's really from left field.

OH, any thoughts on Foxconn shutting down the Chinese factories...(where they JUST raised minimum wage?) Talk about a kiss on the cheek followed by a kick in the @##.

Wonder how this will affect manufacturing quality?

Edit: Guess I've gone pretty far OT.
