Is it a "chime" or is it a series of tones? I hear my Airpods go through a sequence of tones when I put them in the case. There's a chime it makes when it's on the charger, but I turned that off.

Learning I'm not sure what the word "chime" really means...

Some sounds can be disabled by connecting the AirPods to an Apple device, going to Settings, tapping on the AirPods icon, and turning off Enable Charging Case Sounds.
That option is always grayed out on all my devices. Oddly, though thankfully, even though the toggle is locked in the 'enabled' position, the feature seems to be disabled.

Good to know! I thought I was going crazy! I searched high and low around my office trying to figure out where the sound was coming from.

Didn’t knew it was a mystery. I like it as I know it’s charging, that was a pain with my beats buds and AirPods Pro original. I had few occasions when I thought it was charging but didn’t, especially in rental cars.

The article is talking about an entirely different sound.

Umm… so something has to listen to the speaker.
That means that the microphone is activated (briefly) at unpredictable times when the AirPods are in the case.
This cannot be disabled? 🤔

I've been quite curious about this actually. I learned quickly not to leave them on my nightstand charger at night.
This ^^

I left my AirPods on there and my wife couldn’t sleep all night cause of some noise. Then I heard it in the morning and I was just blown away they were doing that. I figured at first it would just notify me they were done or something… nope. Constant… incessant… ding… over and over. Even after charged.

Glad it can be turned off. Ridiculous “feature”.

Whoa. I'd be happy to hear these things make a noise. My 2 Pro pods (backup for real hearing aids Black Friday special) are useless for me since I cannot get my phone to ring through the pods. Padcasts, vids, etc. audio works ok. A nice little chime would be better than nothing.

What the hell Apple?

So that's what that annoying quick triple-beep at different frequencies is.

How do you not clearly indicate that such a "feature" is enabled and why can't it be disabled?
