I can think of many circumstances in which that would be entirely unacceptable. Sure, most of the time it would be "So what?."

And how do we turn this feature (bug IMO) off? I too thought it was an indicator of something being wrong and would pick the case up and re-seat the airpods in it.

Every time I put my AirPods back in their case, I hear a noise and thought something was wrong. This is something one could expect from cheap Chinese knockoffs!!! I used to love them, but recent firmware updates have made them worse. Apple’s attention to detail has clearly declined, especially since Steve Jobs’ era. While the hardware is great, the software, once Apple’s strength, has deteriorated, with bugs in macOS and iOS that would have been unthinkable under Jobs’ leadership. It’s disappointing to see the company lose its edge.

Why isn't it smart enough to know that 2 AM is probably not a good time for this test.
That's because AirPods lack Apple Intelligence.

Once Apple Intelligence is released for them in 2035, they'll use extensive algorithms to ensure they don't make this noise while you sleep, only to do it anyway because Apple Intelligence is a piece of ****.

Is it a "chime" or is it a series of tones? I hear my Airpods go through a sequence of tones when I put them in the case. There's a chime it makes when it's on the charger, but I turned that off.

Learning I'm not sure what the word "chime" really means...
Never heard sequence of tones, at least not yet. I hear a single chime when I put it on charge or when battery is low.

Well it did mention the sound I was hearing. I doubt article mentioned any particular sound. Every post seems to be referring a different sound.

Haha yeah that's the problem with describing audio 😂 you're talking about the "I'm charging" sound, but the article is talking about a higher-pitched, more-robotic sound that the Pods themselves sometimes make after you close the case.

So that’s what it was. I kept hearing for months a tone like you’d hear in Knicks knockoff Chinese electronics. I was starting to think I had fakes or that I was crazy, because I couldn’t find anything online
Exactly! I started hearing this months ago and I had the same reaction: this sounds like a knockoff product!

That's probably the best time for the test. It's a calibration test, measuring how well the microphones and speakers work. So you'd want to do such a test when it's as quiet as possible.

That said it seems to do the test about 20 seconds after I put the airpods back in the case, every time.

Mine do it every time I put them back in the case after using them and close the lid. 5 seconds later. 🎶

Yeah, that's different than what I'm hearing. There's no mistaking that chime-- I think that one comes from the case itself. That one I have turned off in the app, so it doesn't happen anymore. What I hear is quiet enough that I wasn't sure I was hearing it, or that it was in the room with me- presumably because it's the Airpod itself making a sound inside the case.

Once I figured out it was coming from the Airpods case it was obviously some kind of calibration sequence-- maybe 4 tones each an octave apart. I wouldn't have called what I hear a "chime", though, which I think is part of what's confusing. To me a chime has a complex set of harmonics, but that's not what I'm hearing. Apple's usually pretty precise with their language though, so maybe it's just quiet enough that I'm only noticing the fundamentals. It's also usually done before I notice it, so I'm trying to remember what I heard.

Same, and it’s extremely subtle. I’ve never heard it any other time and mine charge right beside my bed. I’m not sure what people in this thread are talking about.

Wait is there really?? I haven’t been hearing the chime in case, but I have been getting blasts of white noise while I’m wearing them. Maybe this is related?
i would get it replaced if it’s under warranty for white noise. I had same issue with white noise with ANC original AirPods Pro.

Omg. This has been driving me insane! I sleep next to my bedroom window, which majority of the time is open. The first time I heard this was in the middle of the night. My paranoid mind thought someone was outside my house using an electric signal device to obtain my car key to steal my car “how dramatic” 💀😭😅 subsequently I realised that was not the case after I have now heard this annoying sound multiple times and it’s always in the middle of the night. Never knowing what it was or where it was coming from. This post has made my day! 😂 thank you!

And what does it do if the test finds that they are "not operating at their best", I wonder.....
