That doesn't mean anything. I've been using computers since before he was born and before Microsoft or Apple were created, but that doesn't mean I can hack your computer with only your IP address.

However, if the OP has accepted a file transfer over IM, and the OP "installed" it, it's possible the random dude has managed to install something on the OP's computer.

And really, from his/her posts, I wouldn't be surprised if s/he did.

I believe you need to establish a peer-to-peer connection via webcam or by accepting a file transfer to be able to use netstat ...

... oh crap ...

@PinkSakura, you haven't been sharing files or video with this random dude, have you?

no i did not.. just chatted with him.im going to delete him and sign off now bec. its 3 Am here.. thanks for everything and for the concern and helpful comments.

This makes me laugh, Your not going to get hacked by this guy you don't have to worry. Anyone can look up anyones IP address there are plenty of utilities to do this.

Your ports on your router would have to be open for him to even be able to get to the front door of your computer and considering your so paranoid about all of this i'm sure you haven't opened them. Then he would need a couple other things including your administrative password to your computer.

Its not going to happen, he is just a dumb ass kid who needs to go back to playing WOW.

If the OP received and installed something from a stranger, that's not a hack... that's stupidity. The OP can answer whether that has happened or not.

I'd offer the guy $1,000 if he can hack my computer with just my IP address... he simply can't do it. Tell him to put up or shut up.

i dont even know how to open the ports router ..not sure what you are talking about :D Im a dummy to be honest. I just started using Apple computer since 2008,before that PCs but I was a beginner.

He seemed to know a lot of things. He has this youtube page where he shows how to hack Iphone stuffs.how to use computer without internet buy using Iphone etc.. all those sorts..
I hate to leave but i cant open my eyes anymore.I am off to bed.. thanks again.

i guarantee you he cant hack you. and if he has the skills to hack someone via their ip, he should be working for cisco or some security company.

that being said you can always change your ip; even if you have a static ip or dynamic - simple mac address cloning then reset it and bam

As other people have said, your public IP address is ... PUBLIC. Anytime you access the Internet, any system you access knows what your PUBLIC IP address is.

And yes, it's usually a simple DOS command line called "traceroute" (well, tracert in DOS) that will take your public IP address and show you who the main Internet provider for it is. That's also public knowledge.

So essentially, this guy is using easily obtainable public knowledge to scare you because you're not as techy as he is.

I hope Santa gives him coal this year!

Tell him to bring it on! Jailbreaking a phone is simple, compared to hacking a firewall. There are plenty of instructions online about how to jailbreak. It's common knowledge. Hacking firewalls, not so much.

You can find out what your IP shows by clicking here:

http://www.tracemyip.org/

He's full of BS.

hey, i am still here.one last then im off to bed.
I checked the link and it showed me my Ip address, browser, country, mac version,city..but how come when i was checking my IP address using Terminal awhile ago.. it 's a different Ip address than what I saw on that link you gave me?

I also like the earlier idea of having his Mommy give him a time out ... and no dessert with his din din.

If you're on a network, your computer has two IP addresses; one external that is public on the internet, and one internal, that identifies your computer on your network.

What is the difference between an internal IP and an external IP?

Your Internal IP address of your COMPUTER will start with either a 192.168, 10.x or 172.x address. That is the IP your router assigns to your computer.

There is a public IP address which your provider will assign to your router, that will be the IP you saw on that link you were provided.

Dont worry about it, there is not a threat.

If you're running OS X 10.6.5, you should not worry! ;)
Let's see his miserable attempts to hack a UNIX system! :D

As already mentioned, the fella can see your public address but not your private. For a better piece of mind, if your ISP is providing you with a dynamic IP address just reboot your modem/router which should give you a new public IP.

For some chat protocols its quite easy to find details of IP addresses, which OS (with version) and which chat client another user is on but whoopee!... its just data but you will need alot more than this to hack.

Because he obviously doesn't know what he's talking about. Kinda like my 3 year old great nephew threatening to nuke Australia. Not much of a threat!
the chances of him knowing how to actually do it are about 1 in infinity - however it is possible for people who are technically savvy to be able to obtain an IP address in this matter, and then hack into some part of a system are somewhat more plausible. there are people who are that smart :D

DONT NUKE AUSTRALIA!!

You are a victim of fear tactics. I am assuming you are a very gullible person and click on ads that tell you that you've won a million dollars.

Seriously, just move on with life and stop talking to him. Problem solved.

Tell him you've changed your IP to 127.0.0.1, and he should go ahead and try to hax0r all he wants. ;)

help, can he hack me bec. he knows my IP?

This is the equivalent of asking if someone can rob your house if they know your your address. Sure it helps, but it's not something that couldn't be looked up and it doesn't make it any easier to commit the crime.

In short, you've got nothing to worry about.
