I wouldn't rule out sleepwalking. A friends dad went online one night and managed to track down a second hand Terminator 2 pinball machine being sold by a dusty little pub in eastern Europe, didn't realise until the thing was delivered. He doesn't like Terminator or Pinball! :p

thanks again for you help everybody...

is there way to keep my ipad off when i charge it overnight??

it usually pops on and i have WIFI off, 3G off and have it in airplane mode

the only thing i can think to do is to turn my wireless modem off while its charging overnight

You do know how to turn the thing off, right?

Just read the whole thread. Agree with most of the comments that your iPad was not hacked. I do have a couple observations which may explain the events as you describe them, in order of likelihood:

1) Your Amazon account was hacked, but it was in no way related to your iPad, vacation, or Father's router.
2) Someone was playing with your iPad and inadvertently (or on purpose) made these Amazon purchases. This could have been done prior to you and your wife going to bed. IE - earlier that day or the day before (a child perhaps?)
3) The 9 web pages "opened" in Safari -> This is just a history, for the most part, showing the last 9 most recently opened websites. This is a "feature" of Safari. Doesn't mean they were all opened while you were sleeping.
4) Your wife made these purchases and/or was surfing on the iPad and inadvertently made these purchases.

Long shot possibility -> Someone got a hold of your iPad prior to your vacation. They surreptitiously installed Cydia and Veency on your iPad. Then waited for you to leave your house, followed you to your vacation spot, hacked the WEP secured router (only conceivable part of this plot), correctly guessed your IP address then VPN'd to your iPad. They then ordered these Amazon purchases, with plans to steal them from your porch once delivered.

What totally blows my mind is that you believe you might have been hacked, your iPad compromised and charges of around $4000 (was $8000 but amended in a later post) yet you don't want to wipe your iPad?

I would be very interested to know the conclusion to this story.

PS - as an experiment I set restrictions on my iPad, then successfully used VPN through Veency without needing to enter the password. So, the perp wouldn't have to know your 4 digit password, assuming they were successful in the other steps outlined above.

if i was successfully able to install 4.3.5, on my ipad last night -- wouldnt that have wiped out any cydia or jailbreaking ?? someone said if it was jailbroken i would not be able to upgrade from 4.3.3 to 4.3.5 and i was successful in doing that last night... so would you guys still wipe it or am i all set??

and yes i know how to shut my ipad down, but when i charge it, it comes on ... so just leave it in airplane mode with wifi and 3G off when i charge at night??

thanks

Upgrading to 4.3.5 would eliminate the presence of a jailbreak and associated apps. The point I think most are trying to make is that if events unfolded as you described, your iPad was breached in a way in which none of us are aware is possible. If I was even remotely concerned my iPad (iPhone, computer, XBOX, Wii, Tivo) was breached, I would be wiping everything.

Sigh. No. When you plug in the charger, power it down again. Voila.

thanks, after a year of having the iPad, i finally realized this is how you did it... i feel so stupid...

I was surprised that no one pointed this out. Pocket cloud is a VNC app for the ipad.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I just had to point that out

Nathan :)

It allows you to VNC out of the iPad, not into it. That's why it wasn't mentioned. Because it was irrelevant.

Well, I somehow missed this thread the first time around, fascinating and entertaining reading! I have to say, as someone said at some point along the way, it is one of the strangest threads I've read on MacRumors.

How about, some kids snuck in the house while you slept and simply ordered the stuff on you ipad and left laughing all the way back to their stoner hide out
