Hey all,

My Macbook 12" (early 2015, 1.1Ghz Core M 8GB ram) with OS X 10.14.2 has been shutting itself down after I leave it sleeping - sometimes overnight, sometimes when I take it out with me. I left it with Apple several months ago and paid a couple of hundred dollars for Apple to fix battery and it seems to have been since then.

Can anyone suggest why? Here is the EtreCheck report:

thanks!!

(Also - do I need to configure Time Machine? I don't use it).

Open console and look for any kernel panics under System Report. See if there is anything in the list that has a little yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it. If so, copy and paste some of the log contents here.

There does not appear to be any.

I mean I have heard a lot of people on Mojave reporting sleep issues. I am on a 2017 15" MBP and knock on wood have not had any issues, however I did to a clean install and manual migration of files and manual reinstall of programs when Mojave was released. Might be worth a shot, just back up first.

There was a thread over here and other places on the internet, regarding something to do with the 2015 MacBooks and random shutdowns.

There is also a YouTube video out there talking about soldering issues in 2011 MBPs with dGPUs and Apple not learning anything, even till the early 2015 MacBooks - suffering from roughly similar soldering issues that crippled the 2011 notebooks.

TLDR; the 2015 MacBooks were a lottery (according to the very well-informed guy in the YouTube video) just like the 2011 MBPs with a dGPU. He argued that similar soldering strategies and deficiencies to the point of even using the same components that were failing in 2011 in the new 2015 MacBooks, is the reason why the 2015 MacBooks are ticking time bombs for so many people.

There is nothing that can be done, except probably getting one's hands dirty with the hardware. The only other thing that can be done is selling off the 2015 notebooks and buying an Early 2016 or 2017 model, or wait for the new 2019 ones due this year.

EDIT:

Here, I found the video, fortunately. He explains everything about why the 2015 notebooks are failing randomly.
