technology is disposable. apple especially promotes the use of their products for ~2 years max(i.e. software/apps that can only be used on the newest version making your current version obsolete). save your money and get a first gen.

Help me out here. If it's only good for 2 years, and 1 year is gone already. The saving between iPad 1 and 2 is less than 50%, yet you still recommend the iPad 1?

You contradict yourself, or do I misinterpret?
iPad1 400$ for one year (1 year left out of two)
iPad2 500$ for two years

I should have clarified:

IF you assume the amount lost selling the ipad / ipad 2 after a year of use is the same (i.e. 20% loss), then by renewing the model you have every year starting with this year you save $40 by buying the iPad 1 now.

OP is comparing a $399 32GB iPad and he/she SHOULD be comparing it to a $599 32GB iPad 2 (It doesn't make sense to compare a 16gb to a 32gb in this situation). If we do this we can see here that selling the iPad 1 will return him $320, while the iPad 2 will return him $480 [both after one years use]. If OP buys the iPad 1, when the OP goes to buy the iPad 2 next year (when iPad 3 will be released [speculation]), he/she will buy it for $399 32GB (assume same deal) therefore only spending $80 more to get a different version. If he/she buys the iPad 2 now, next year he/she will be spending $120 for the same 32GB model.

You save $40....

Well I appreciate all the response. I found a great deal on craigslist for a mint iPad 1 64GB with an Apple case for $350. I just couldn't justify spending almost $200 more for upgraded technology that I really didn't feel would be useful to me.

I am so happy with this thing and have no regrets about my purchase. The 1 seems like it will fit my needs perfectly (for now).

Thanks again for all the responses.

In all honesty, I have 6 gb of music on my iPad and I never listen to it lol. If I ever need space I may slim it down further and just use pandora

If 40$ is a significant amount to someone, I don't think they should be considering electronic gadgets like iPads.

40 bucks add up over time, and if you buying an iPhone and iPad each year, it can add up, and you don't always spend only 40 bucks.

No reason ever to waste money.

That said, I don't think the iPad 2 is a waste of money

Until they jb the ipad2....not anything I would really bother with....my gf has the 2 and I have the 1.....I have an abundance of accessories at very low discounted prices and all she has is the invisible shield. And I forbid her to buy the so called smart cover that protects nothing. There's my two cents.

Ipad1 16gig
Otter box defender
Zagg full
Car charger

$400

Hi all,

Okay I'm finally gonna pull the trigger on an iPad tommorow after weeks of debating. Now my only decision is which one to get. I have a choice between the following:

iPad 1 32GB Wifi - $399 (from Verizon)
iPad 2 16GB Wifi - $499

I have an iPhone 4 and a Macbook and I'm planning on using my iPad mainly for browsing the internet on the couch, reading ebooks, and most importantly, accessing my home computers on the go using Logmein Ignition (Im studying from my CPA and need access to my study programs and don't feel like lugging my laptop everywhere). Also want to do some lite excel/work processing using Numbers and Pages. Would also like to tinker around with Garageband (although I have a Macbook with Garageband already).

I will not be using the iPad to take pictures but if I had the 2 I MIGHT use it for Facetime although I'm fine just using my iPhone for that (have Facetime on my Macbook too).

It seems that the iPad 1 would be fine for my needs but for some reason, I want the iPad 2 lol. I'm also a little worried that 16GB won't be enough room which also points to me getting the iPad 1. I've watched some comparison videos and although the iPad 2 looks faster, the ipad 1 seems fine for my needs.

I think I've just talked myself into the 1 while writing this post lol. Any reason I should reconsider? The main thing that worries me is future compatabliity with new iOS releases/features (in the next two years as I would probably upgrade after that).

I dont think you will be able to watch becker/rp videos off logmein. It lags quite a bit and sound prolly wont be synchronized

I know someone who recently bought the iPad 1 because he works in an area where he can't take a camera in. The iPad 2 has a camera, so it was a no go for him.

my 2 cents

Here is my 2 cents:
Like others have said, if you don't already own an iPad, buy the iPad2. Why?
Well, the way I figured it, I already waited over a year for the iPad2 so why buy an older technology? No one NEEDS an iPad unless you are a doctor etc that actually uses it at work. For the majority of us, it is a luxury item/fun gadget. And knowing myself, I would of had constant nagging/doubts if I opted for iPad1. I have to say, I have ZERO regrets about buying the New 32GB iPad. And if you are that short on funds, I'd say "don't buy an ipad. period".

I just went through this EXACT decision. The iPad 2 didn't impress me quite enough over the iPad 1, so I ended up getting an iPad 1 refurb for $349 from Apple. Just received it yesterday, and it looks like a brand new unit.

I'll probably be first in line to buy the iPad 3, but for now this will suit me just fine.

If you can live with an iPad 2 16gb, then the one to consider is the iPad1 16gb at 299$ (if it's still available). 200$ is substantial... 100$ is not to justify the lack of new features and feeling outdated right away.

Yeah definitely can't watch the videos over logmein due to the lag and the sound. I use it for to access the study questions (at lunch at work..every bit helps!!). It works PERFECTLY for this.

Yes this is probably what is holding me back from getting the 1. But.....as long as the 1 is future proof for the next 2 years (most likely iOS 5 & iOS 6) then I'm fine...

I would get the 2...I wasn't crazy with the performance of GarageBand on the 1.
