Hey Gang,

Okay, I can't wrap my brain around this. Let me detail my current situation, and my thought process.

I currently have a 32GB iPhone 4. I love it. I have all my music and apps on it, and I still have about 14GB free. My iPhone 4 is with me at all times. On my commute, I listen to my many podcasts along w/ my music.

I stream all my video content - primarily HBO Go.

Why on earth would I need a 32 GB iPad2? I have no interest in carting it around in my car to do what my iPhone already does quite well. So, using it as a iPod substitute is a non-issue. Its too cumbersome to shoot video on, so forget about that.

I see this as a GREAT device to consume content, but not store it. At least not how I can envision using it.

So why would 16GB leave me wanting? Am I missing something? Some would say spend the 100 bucks to be safe, but a 100 bucks is a 100 bucks ...

????

Thanks in advance !

I bought an Ipad 1 orginally with 64 gb so I could 'future proof' it and use it for a long time. Well, that seemed like a great idea until the ipad 2 came out and I noticed how much of an improvement it was over the first gen. I bought my first one with an extended warranty as well not knowing how reliable it would be so I ended up spending $850 plus tax on it here in Canada. Just recently bought an ipad 2 16 gb, no extended warranty for $519. First of all, if you're someone who really likes the technology and will make a move every year or year and a half it's kind of nice not to spend as much money. On my first ipad I loaded up movies, music, and tons of games on it, until I used basically all of the memory. My primary use of my ipad is at home and at home I'm connected to my home network and use home sharing in itunes for all my music, air video for movies, and netflix for more shows, so I basically stream a lot of stuff and don't need to have it loaded on the ipad. I thought I'd use my first one as a photoalbum and loaded all my pics on it but I found out I rarely used it for that. Also, on my original I had a couple dozen of games, but basically at any one time I'd only be playing a few, and didn't need so many available.

So, like many people have said it really depends on your use of it. For myself, for primarily use at home, it's fantastic with only 16gb, I have it all loaded up with everything I want (around 6 games, several e-readers, some comics, some music) for now and still have 8gb free. When I'm away I just take my laptop so I don't need the big memory in it. Hope this helps.

I have a 32GB iPhone 4 and that is where I have all my music and apps. I have a 16GB iPad, and I have 5 movies on on there, about 20 apps and no music, and I still have a little over 7GB left. Your usage sounds similiar to my situation, so in that case I think the 16GB iPad would suit you just fine.

Just out of interest, what types of apps are you using that are that large? That might help put this all in perspective.

Downloaded "You need a Map" the other day. Great replacement for a road atlas (actually several) but it runs over 2 gigabytes.

Whoa...thanks for posting that! I had no idea such a program existed...looks like it's almost like the $30-50 GPS programs, except free.

I'm grabbing this when I get home!

Okay, so I may end up with over THREE GB of map/GPS programs when all is said and done...

The handful of modern-ish games for iOS are huge too.

I wouldn't buy a 32GB to be safe, I'd buy it because I needed that much space.

Had a 32GB original iPad and it never really got freed up, I only ever left about 2GB available, incase of any popular/huge games on sale. The space was taken mostly by movies, and generally there were no more than 10 of them. I'd download, convert for iPad, and swap movies every few weeks, so it was great to not worry about running out of space.

Just see what your needs are. I could never get by with a 16gb, however for some people that might even be too much. :)

Well, for me it boils down to this.

It seems like I could get by with a 16GB model. A 32GB model buys me piece of mind. Maybe I grow into it, maybe I don't.

I appreciate all the feedback and thoughts - thanks for taking the time to give me your 2 cents. Much appreciated. :apple:

It's a shame no iOS devices come with microSD or SD slots. Of course that's how Apple makes record profits. A spare $100 or $200 from those worrying about not having enough memory. One of the big reasons I prefer most of my android tablets over my iPad 2. Never thought twice about getting the 32gb version over the 16gb version as with a microSD or SD card I never bump into "Out of memory" problems.

The Playbook, TouchPad, and many Android Tablets do not come with microSD slots either.

Interesting thread... I got a 32gb although for $100 more I could have gotten a 64gb. I googled and the consensus seemed to be that a 32gb was plenty.

It depends on your usage. For me, my iPhone and iPad will never replace my iPod for any journey so I only copied around 2gb of music onto my iPhone and iPad. I converted a lot of videos so they would work on my Ipad and they became bigger than the originals. I mainly browse the net, read, watch videos and upload photos etc.

I delete apps if I find that I don't use them and I will delete books once I have read them too.

It seems like you have reached a decision but I would add my opinion FWIW that if you can afford the 32gb, I would go for that. However if you are also planning to get the iPad3 whenever it is released, stick to the 16gb.

The Playbook, TouchPad, and many Android Tablets do not come with microSD slots either.
Of course. Every iOS tablet made doesn't, yet several Android tablet do. The Sony S, the Asus Transformer, the Acer Iconia 10.1 and 7, the Velocity Cruz, and my Nook Color in my collection all do. Bought the smallest memory versions of them if there was a choice for that reason.

Basically if you have to debate it, go for the bigger one. There are some applications (mostly games) that are nearly or even over a gig. You can't (easy) expand the memory, so spend a bit extra for the piece of mind. I have a 32 gig, and although I only have two movies and about two dozen albums, I am nearly full thanks to some of these larger apps. I'd hate to be in the situation of perpetually syncing if I had a 16 gig unit.

Hope that helps.

Maybe I should've added I also have a VZW 4G MiFi into the equation ... As it is off a gov't plan, I also have unlimited data on it.

However, it would seem 32 is the 'safe' bet whereas a 16 would 'probably' do what I need it to. At least right now.

Yep. 32 is safe. 16 is doable. An unlimited plan may be a huge help for you as well, especially if you invest in a plan with Dropbox.

I have the 16gb and have had NO regrets!! I currently have 122 carefully selected songs and music videos, 439 photos and 66 apps, plus lots of iBooks, Kindle and Overdrive library books. 8.8gb still available. I personally like managing my available space.

I don't have any movies or tv shows on my iPad 2. I am unable to stream either due to ISP limitations, so that could be a deciding factor for you.

My entire music library is on my iPhone.

Hope this helps.

I can't wrap my heap around your thought process that made you post this thread.

Well do you listen and watch EVERYTHING all 14~GB? that is on your iPhone on every journey to work?

THEN WHY GET ONE?

So does your iPhone leave you wanting an iPad? Do you need an iPad, can you justify an iPad. Buying an iPad is a hell of a lot more expensive than the $100 you're stressing about.

I vote you get the 32GB

I have a 64gb iPad, and I don't have enough space for all the apps, pictures and videos I want to put on it. If Apple came out with a 128gb iPad, I'll be first in line to buy it, and happily fill it up as soon as I got it home.

Yes, I know I won't watch all my videos in one sitting, but it's so frustrating when I'm sitting somewhere and think, "oh, I want to watch that video," only to find that it's not on my iPad at the moment. So for me, there can never me too much storage. Of course, that's just how I feel about it, other people could be perfectly happy with 16gb.

Nothing worse than having a full iPad and dealing with iTunes to sort it out.

For some users recording video and iMovie renders can fill one up pretty quick.

Ordered the 32 - picking it up at my local Best Buy over lunch. Thanks again guys.

Depends entirely on what you everyday use is.

Sorry that I hadn't checked the thread in a couple of days. I'm at work now without iTunes, so I'll check tonight and give you feedback. I know Monopoly HD is HUGE, but I'll give you some examples and file sizes this evening.

I am so happy I got the 32 i have 2200 songs on it, most of my photos, a couple pages of good apps, a movie and I have 3 Gb left. I don't know how I could really survive with 16 but that's me. It really all depends on what you want on it but it's good to get more than you think you need especially if your gone have it fir a while.

Monopoly is 227.7 MB
Eternal Legacy is 686.1 MB

I have dozens in the 25-50 MB range as well. All told it's nearing on 5 GB of apps now. I love em, just don't want to have to manage them this tightly lol

Similar config here. 13+ gigabytes of music (2200 songs). Another 13 gigs of apps (about 130, I think.) and about 6gigs of photos, books, etc. Fortunately, I have a 64 gig model.

I could get along with a 32 gig model without much difficulty but for the extra $100 I don't have to "manage" space at all. And if I figure my time is worth something, it was easily worth it.

No criticism intended of those with less storage than mine. I originally ordered the 32 gig model and then changed my mind before it was shipped from Apple. My reasoning was that since I wouldn't be able to increase storage after purchase, I was better off not taking the risk.

Justify it this way, it's a compromise between the expensive 64GB and the inadequate 16GB
