For the uses you stated, there's nothing you can't do with the first gen iPad. Twice the price is steep for the relative increased speed and lightness IMO, unless it removes essentially *all* checkerboarding or Safari refreshes.

Get the first gen and use the savings for iPad 3 which will have an improved display (or any other Apple product). :)

Yea, there are about an even amount of pros and cons to the 1st generation and and generation. I got 1st gen from my friend and I have been LOVING it so far :) I don't really know how much of a difference the iPad 2 is besides the camera and speed to me. I bring the iPad with me EVERYWHERE now. Bus, restroom ;), bed, school, and work :D It feels much more convenient to me than my aluminum macbook. I can probably just sell it back on craigslist for more money and save up for a newer iPad when it DOES come out ;)

To me, this answer is simple.

If you are the type of person who likes to have the newest model AND you intend to upgrade to an iPad 3 whenever it comes out, then you get the iPad 2.

If you have no intention of upgrading anytime soon and just want to use the device for what it is worth, the you get the first gen iPad.

Personally, I would go for the 2 based on the re-sale value alone. However, if upgrading isn't that important to you, then the first gen iPad is more than sufficient and capable.

The new model is twice as much, plus tax. The differences are well documented - you should be able to determine whether you want to pay.

You have to answer it for yourself. There are out to many different opinions. I got the iPad 1 64 WiFi + 3G for a great price so I decided to buy the first gen last month. And since the first day i'm very happy with it and I don't want to upgrade until there is coming something absolutely stunning which could be a higher resolution and MUCH lighter. It doesn't make any sense for me to buy every year a new iPhone or iPad and MacBook.
