help with 3gs 3.1.2

I now have another iphone that is a 8GB model and I dont know if its a 3G or 3GS - I assume since it dont have a video camera its the 3G not 3GS but its already jailbroken so maybe that isnt there after this

how can I tell from the SN or model number

On the home screen of a 3GS there would be a compass. On the back the letters are more shiny and the capacity of the iPhone isn't listed.

The 3G would either say "8GB or 16GB". New 3GS 8GB's don't say the capacity of the iPhone on the back.
