How about an outfit I put together from a few of the places mentioned in the thread-

Would that outfit work ok for me?
Now I just have to tell my parents that my clothes should not come from WalMart all the time...

That's a good choice - although I'd trade off the blue T shirt for a dark brown (the warm kind of brown that A&F/Hollister offers) or a dark green, depending on your eye colour or 'season' as they say.

Also, the scuffy jeans could be tamed a bit - if they're too scuffy you'll end up looking too sloppy. A little bit is okay, a lot is overkill. You'll find the balance you're comfortable with.

that's m2c at least. LONG winded, I know...

I'm not necessarily suggesting that you dress to "stand out". However, if you shop ONLY at Abercrombie, American Eagle, Hollister, you're going to have the same shirt and pants as 60 guys at your high school. Just be aware of this every time you shop there. There's already 2 other guys in this thread who recommended those 3 companies, so you know there's a chance you're all wearing the same shirt and pants. ;)

It's crazy, because there are so many stores out there, and everyone shops at the same 3 or 4. Buy stuff from them if you want, but you do have more options than that.

Also, there are more colours in the world than just black, white, grey, blue, and brown. Don't dress like a rainbow, but consider this. ;)

Skater shoes is a very wide category. You have everything from old school chucks to very plain looking vans to very colorful and interesting looking Nike Dunks. I own a few pair of Nike Dunks that are rarely worn because of them being limited edition. I try to find the shoes that go with the clothes, not clothes that go with my current shoes.

Maybe, but lets face it. Most 15 year olds own a pair of runners, and if they're wise (and can afford to), they'll own a pair of normal shoes to wear. I didn't mean "Don't get Vans", or "Don't get skaters". What I meant is "Don't wear runners all the time. However, you're not limited to Vans, or shoes like those."

I think 3 pairs of jeans isn't enough, I have about 5 in my closet and they are all mostly different styles. If you wear jeans on a consistent basis, I would own at least 4-5. That is just me though. Oh yeah, I don't wear shorts during the summer, so I wear jeans pretty much all year around.

I meant you don't "need" to have more than 2 pairs of jeans. Of course, if you can afford it, you can own 10 pairs and I wouldn't complain. Why not? However, I think if you're going to own 5 pairs of pants, don't make 4 of them jeans. I just think people should move beyond just jeans and cargos, and own at least 1 pair of pants that doesn't fit in either category. So with 5 pairs of pants in the closet: 2 x jeans and 2 x cargos and 1 x something else, or 3 x jeans and 1 x cargos and 1 x something else. That "something else" could even be another pair of cargo pants if the colour and material makes them a bit different, and less casual.

Agreements. Never stick to just one single company, or even two or three. You've got to know what works with your body type, pick and choose stuff that you like and you're comfortable in, and make it your own.

Also, keep in mind that you wear a certain 'look' from a company, next season you'll look out of date, and with the scuffy look, by the time you're 35 you'll look silly.

I tend to wear non-logo shirts. I've got tons of Gap stretch Ts (fitting oh so loverly and comfily). I don't like the feeling of being a billboard for someone else. To each his own, however.

Yeah, following a company's trends is bad, because it's expensive. If you're made of money, then go ahead. I have no idea what's in fashion because I'm in my late 20s now and don't care. :D However, I'm still a university student, so I have some ideas.

I've been wearing corduroy pants for the past 12 months, and have caught other guys staring at them (no sexual connotations). Oh, and I have a pair of "dress pants"-style cotton pants that aren't formal. They're grey with skinny light-blue pinstripes, and I wear them with everything from casual t-shirts, collared shirts, etc. It never looks bad (IMO) and people do take a look.

That's what I mean by owning 1 pair of pants that aren't jeans or casual cargos.

Thanks Abstract. I guess I am leaning more towards the preppy.
Just give me a little bit of time and I can attach a few pics of me.:apple:
I really appreciate all that you guys do for me.:D:D
Abstract- Here are Face and Body Pics
I'll be back in a bit, have to eat dinner.

Stick to the colours you're looking at now (i.e. average to darker colours), and don't go for skinny, tight t-shirts. For your body type, I don't think light coloured, tight clothing would make you look good.

Now, the shirt you're wearing in the photo doesn't look perfect because it's seems really baggy. Don't wear really baggy clothes, but don't go overboard and go for tight, skinny clothes, or brands that mainly sell skinny shirts.

Oh, and t-shirts are good, but so are shirts with collars. ;)

I actually really like the look of those and that kind of look is what I might go for. I don't have an opinion on Logos either way and it doesn't matter to me. I already own about two pairs of shoes (that are acceptable to wear in public) one is a pair of runners and the other is a pair of "grandpa shoes" as I call em. (Plain White, New Balance 381's.)
I actually have lots and lots of pairs of jeans and that is why I am going to weed things out and rid of stuff that doesn't fit. Over the past 2 years or so I have lost a lot of weight and wear a smaller size (I think so anyway, have to see what waist size fits me).
Unfortunately some of the other stores like Lacoste, Ralph Lauren, Ruehl, and Abercrombie, either are not in this area or are out of my price range.
I want to use the Economic Stimulus money on this ($600 woot!).
I also might go shopping and get a few things just to see how they would fit on me this week or weekend since both my parents are off for vacation next week( We're staying at home, it is too expensive to drive anywhere.).

Ok. Your last post actually says a lot about what you have, what you can afford, and stuff like that. It would have come in handy earlier. ;) I'm sure you may even find something suitable at places like Walmart or Gap. Logos rarely mean anything to people, even in high school. Sure, there are some kids that will care, but the majority will not.

Looks like you know what you want (t-shirts and jeans). The funny thing is that you're taking advice from us, and you don't even know if we dress sensibly. :p

my other advice is to get clothes that actually FIT you! I noticed in the pictures that you have on a sort of baggy polo and a pair of cargo shorts ... those things are a little large. This is exactly what Abstract mentioned.

I totally disagree with the advice about not standing out ... I'm not saying stand out freakishly ... I'm saying stand out with good style

fit matters SOOOO much ...

Don't go baggy if your doin the preppy look. When buying clothes, you should buy the smallest size that feels comfortable, not some random size that you know HAS to fit because it is clearly larger than you. The polo doesnt look bad but the pants are too baggy

there is tons of Hollisters in Dallas Texas?

try a used clothing store that might fit your budget and they have good brands

There are lots of Hollisters in my area, but stuff like Ralph Lauren and Abercrombie are not in my closest mall and my parents probably would not drive me to downtown dallas since I actually live in the Suburbs.:(

Those shorts are the smallest size waist I own! Size 32.

They're no good anymore. They used to be quite decent (i actualyl have alot of stuff from there) but they have become so cheap with their clothes

Their polos especially. They keep becoming thinner and thinner and prices stay the same.

Also, Express has lots of nice things, and their quality is great. Check one out if you have one.

Gucci? Louis Vuitton? Are you serious?

With regards to who you take with you to go shopping, while the general consensus is that girls do have better taste and know how to shop, some girls do have terrible fashion sense so I wouldn't stereotype.

Didn't say girls have better taste. Girls look at boys (generally) - its all about the birds and the bees. Girls are more patient shoppers and if your changing your style that can take time.

But you do need someone who will be honest and you must listen to them. The skinny jeans is a good example of people not listening. Everyone except supermodels look stupid in them but no one listens.

Buy a particular colour group and add to it - don't chose from all over the place.

Your choice looks great - you have no problems there.

Good luck

Here's what you do:

Pick a few young celebrities that have a fairly similar build to you.

Get some magazines that have photoshoots of the individuals.

Pick your favourite outfits.

Recreate them at any local clothing store (IE the Gap).

Alternatively, look through the male mannequins/posters in the stores and recreate the looks you like. Most of these outfits were put together by professionals with attention to detail, so it's a good way to learn how to put something together.

While shopping, keep the fit in mind. Seams at the shoulders, cuffs should fall just above the first knuckle on your thumb with arms slack, shorts at the top of the knee, black socks for black shoes (white for everything else), ties meet the top of your belt buckle, pants should cuff an inch above your shoe sole.

I suggest you go to a store like Urban Outfitters.

They have tons of great brands. Most of they're clothes have more of the "unique" look. They have great T-shirts and jackets and such. They even have extremely cool shoes (btw, i recommend getting a pair of Ascis/Onitsuka Tiger's, they are wonderful shoes).

Take a look at that store, it might be a tad pricey but they always have good sales and the clothes they do put on sale is a very good selection.

Good luck! By the end of this, there won't be a single girl that doesn't wanna be with you;):p:cool:

Please please....call me Clark.

The funniest thing about that GQ thing is that the only thing they did was give those guys some smaller clothes. That's it. It's not magic. However, you don't have to dress precisely like that to look nice. You wouldn't want to dress like that in high school anyway, right? Besides, the "Before" photo was taken on the street, while the "After" photo was taken in a studio. It's hard to compare.

If you're going for really casual, the t-shirt and jeans you picked out are good. If you're aiming for preppy, then it's wrong.

That GQ thing was pretty interesting. Just thought I'd mention, each outfit they put a guy in was over $1k, for reference.

BTW, please don't equate Ralph Lauren and Lacoste (not a fan of Lacoste, but whatever) with A&F and AE. It's just not right.

I'll tell you the key to dressing well (in addition to abstract's good points):

Don't wear cargo.

It's as simple as that. Wear nice khakis that aren't too long, shorts that don't have baggy cargo pockets. It upgrades your look and makes you more sophisticated.

Please please....call me Clark.

I never liked that name :D

The thought of picking a celebrity with similar features to you and then using them as an example is a good idea, actually. Why didn't I think of that?

Do something that make sit your own, though. Don't just blindly copy someone else.

Thank you guys so much for all your help! Once my stuff is gone through and the shopping is done I will probably post some pics. Like a before and after if you will.
Remember, Pics or it didn't happen!;)
If you have any more tips, etc., than you can still post them.
