ohhh and that tapping on the mouse pad.....doesn't work? or is there a setting so I could close a window by just "tapping" or double click something by jsut tapping?

No, you really cant.... unless you decide to manually edit the Xorg and X11 config files which I strongly recommend you not to!;)

The two finger click works well for me!

P.S.: In Mac world, its known as the "trackpad":D

this is exactly what i am looking to-do... how do i do that??

system prefs security then in there u check a box saying require password from screen sleep or sleep ....

EDIT it says require password from screen saver or sleep mode, which is just locking the screen if u dont have sleep mode on and just sleep the display or screen saver catch my drift...?

Thanks for understanding!:D
But actually considering your point, is logging off and locking the same?

My opinion differs! I encode loads of videos and while encoding is going on, I lock my mac and step away for some time! Locking will allow the user processes to run in the background while Logging off will kill all of them!:)

Very true, logging off kills all user processes. Old security habits from server-based systems die hard. ;)

awesome, i just set that up so any type of sleep or screen saver it will require a password.

but per the above... is there a hot key you use to "lock the screen" ie: what you do when you are encoding?

Well i actually havent ever found a key to put the screen into screen saver besides voice commands or putting screen saver 1 min or put screen to sleep at 1 min, but u can always like basically turn the backlight off the screen as well i just do that or put to sleep. and well u just do nothing or iunno what u mean by what do u do when u are encoding, but make sure u put the harddisk to go to sleep never if u dont want long things to stop. Oh there John not beatle answerd your question thank u...

System preferences> security> Require password to something screensaver or sleep mode.
Then you want to go into energy saver> Put the computer to sleep... >Never but you can put the display to sleep as the computer will still be on... if u want it to lock fast you can change the display to sleep in 1 min or somthing then change it when roomates are not in the house etc.. unless if theres a short cut anyone?

so that is the only way to-do that... i can't just hit some shortcut key to simply password the screen?

Workaround

I checked my keyboard shortcuts (which are default) and I don't see anything. However, a workaround for the time being is to enable fast user switching and then just click on your name i the upper right hand corner, select the guest account. It'll take you to the guest user account, but they can't access or perform any important information and functions. It also leaves the user logged in so background functions can work. Then when you come back select your name from the same drop down list on the right and it will prompt you for your password. I know it is weird, however it works.

To lock the screen without a screen saver all you need to do is make sure that Multiple users are turned on in the system prefrences.
1. Make sure you have more than one account on the computer. I recommend that you have one administrator account that you use rarely and a standard account for everyday computing. You do not need to be an admin like in Windows to do every day work. The admin account is only for heavy duty stuff.
2. Go to system prefs. and go the the "accounts" panel.
3. Click "Login Options". Depending on the account you have (standard or admin) press the padlock button and enter your password (or admin password).
4. Then check the box "Enable Fast User Switching".
5. No you will see the account name in the menu bar at the top, next to the clock.
6. Click on the account name in the menu bar and select "Login Window...".
This will keep you logged on but lock the others out.:apple:

To lock you screen without having to wait for the screensaver you can open up keychain access (under applications/utilities), go to preferences and check the box that says "show status on menu bar".

What this does is put a lock on your menu bar (at the top right of your screen) and when you click it you have an option to lock the screen.

Another way to do so manually is by Sys Pref|Accounts|Click on lock (lower left) and authenticiate|In options check 'show in menubar'.

Now click your username in the menubar and click 'login window'

Please follow the above post!

While everything below is recommended... you definitely DONT need to have more than one user accounts to achieve what I've mentioned above!:D

Already answered

C'mon guys and girls, Johnnotbeatle has already answered this:

In the Exposé preferences pane (Inside system preferences), you just select one of the corners to make the display sleep instantly (or to activate the screen saver). And when you want to lock the display, just get the mouse pointer to that corner. This, combined with the "ask for password to activate from screen saver or screen sleep" will give you what you're looking for.

Could it be easier? It is IMHO, simpler and easier than a keyboard shortcut.

you guys are amazing!! thank you so so much!!

hey is there anyway to put all my ichat windows into one window and tab it? like you can do in the new AIM on a pc?

or is there a way to like scroll thru open windows? like alt + tab on a pc?
