Can confirm. Got rid of my 16 Pro because I could no longer stand the size of the thing. At this rate I'll take anything under 6" - but it seems like manufacturers are afraid of smaller screens.
Only because people don’t buy them. My wife loved her Mini 12 despite the battery life limitations, but apparently not enough other people did because they barely sold.

I don't see one single reason to get the Air... except being thin and being the same reason people get an Hermes Apple Watch; to show-off they have money; which, it doesn't make sense; but even with that, seems like a silly purchase. Maybe I'm missing something

I'd like to know, why people will get it, I'm very curious.

That would only make sense if it cost a lot, but it doesn't. It's cheaper than the Pro and and Pro Max, and no one I know thinks (or cares) that someone has money because they have a Pro or Pro Max..

It's not a flagship, and it's not priced like a flagship.

Bigger, nicer screen. Worth the difference? Probably not
Depends. That said, I find it very weirdly positioned - unless it’s just for grabbing raking in on adopter willingness to pay and trickles down like the MacBook Air - or the iPad.

I doubt there’s a large target market of people willing to pay premium prices just for thinness - and forgo premium features and performance.

I see the Air as a short-lived fad that won’t be sustainable and won’t stay in the lineup for more than two generations- unless the price trickles down.

Mainly because the Pros are ugly this year 🤷‍♂️ plus I like the slightly larger screen and don’t mind the single camera or (potentially) shorter battery life, particularly with the optional battery pack.

I want a slightly bigger screen but something lighter than my 14 pro. I honestly think the air could be a good fit for me. I like the pros but my biggest complaint with my 14 pro is the chonk factor and thats better addressed by the air.

I'm going to need to check these out in person to see if it actually does feel better in the hand before I get one though. I dont mind it only having one speaker. I only use that for youtube and speakerphone and a single speaker shoudl be able to do that just fine. usb2 speeds on the connector? I'm okay with that too. one camera? I'm going to have to check that but thinking about it I dont actually take that many pictures on my pro anyway. I do need a better battery but a new air vs a used 14 pro battery will certainly be better and it only needs to be a little better frankly.

Will it fit in the wireless charging pocket in my car? dunno. but the pro max addresses everything but the chonk and the chonk is my leading irritation with my current phone so meh, we'll just have to see.

Trying to reassure anyone considering the Air, despite popular opinion:
  • The Air is classic Apple design, typical from the Jony/Steve era. Of course, some people will hate on it.
  • One larger speaker might actually sound better than two smaller ones. Let’s wait for reviews next week to see.
  • Check for yourself: 90% of your photos come from the 26–52 mm range. You don’t really need three cameras.
  • To be confirmed next week, but the battery looks to be in iPhone 16 Pro territory, better than any previous iPhone.
  • That's the only way to get the most advanced magnetic power bank on the market. You’ll get more battery life than literally any phone with it. You can replace this battery, have a spare one, burn this one instead of the internal one.
  • Tired of the same old silicone cases year after year? The Air gives you a fresh bumper design you won’t find elsewhere.
  • You’re paying for advanced design, not just a component list. It was the deal since the beginning.ut...

But... if you're a photographer who's fussy about color and getting the most from your images by post processing them in Adobe Lightroom, you may be disappointed that the 17 Air does not have an option to shoot in RAW.

While I was set on wanting a 17 Air for its thinness, recently learning that it does not support RAW made it a deal killer for me. Looks like I'll be keeping my 16PM for another year.

This is the type of phone you wait for a gen 2.... But I do not get why you'd make it thin and have a giant camera bump on it? I want someone to do a Nokia 9 today, the only thing holding their phone back was the SoC couldn't drive 5 or 6 cameras at once for video, now modern ones could.

What people forget though is the 12 Pro Max didn't have a battery much bigger and I bet this thing is a lot more efficient than that, so it'll probably last the same as the 12 Pro Max did. Which I still have and use as my daily driver and it's down to 68% battery health and lasts me a day still.

If this phone was £700 or something and marketed as the new SE, people would go wild. I think it's just because it is £1000 that people are angry.

It really didn’t help that they did literally zero advertisement for it. You even had to dig on the website to see the mini

Same. I’d have upgraded at least twice since I got my 13 mini in 2022. I’m still using the mini

My wife says you’ll have to pry her iPhone 12 mini from her tiny, cold, dead hands.

I think around 899-949 would be more enticing. The price is too close to the pro. It could definitely go either way depending how it sells. I suspect the next gen will have less compromises.

Way too compromised and WAY overpriced, plus the fact it will have poor battery life and thermal throttle, it has the same chip in it as the Pro models but the Pro has a thicker chassis and vapour chamber cooling for the SOC. IMO if you are looking at the Air get a standard iPhone 17, it will be a much better buy.
The market segment the Air is targeting is more than likely not going to push the phone to the point of thermal throttle. Otherwise, there are the Pro models.

For the average non tech female do you think they’ll gravitate more to the air or the pro? Or even a non tech male. The lightness and thinness will be a huge ergonomic benefit in the hand and in the pocket
I struggle to understand your point regarding gender.
I don't see one single reason to get a two seat sports car.

But then again, I understand that not everybody is me, and many people have different use cases for their vehicles than I do.

It's kind of like that.

(FTR, I'm not buying an Air either, it doesn't suit my uses. But that doesn't mean it won't suit a lot of other people's uses, and I don't see any need to make them defend their decision.)
That's what I'm trying to understand.

What are the uses. I know the used of a two seat sports car, but I don't for the iPhone Air.

Because GPS, CarPlay, Apple Pay, email, iMessage, Apple Watch/Garmin, Spotify/Apple music, etc. I play zero video on my phone, don't use/browse social media, and I have never played a game on my current phone. (Had it since October).

A flip phone/candy bar wouldn't suit me. There is more to a smartphone than games and video.
Sounds like an AppleWatch Cellular might be a better fit for your needs.

Yeah... I was all set to purchase a 17 Air. But the loss of RAW format when making photos will keep me using my 16PM for another year.

Using Lightroom for all of my image processing, not having RAW available is too big of an issue for me.
have you ever played with HEIF? Obviously I don't know your post workflow, just an idea. and yes, I know it's compressed but retains more detail compared to jpg

At just 9 percent below their flagship’s price - but also 67% above their entry-level model - it’s quite priced like a flagship.

That's true, but using the Hermes, as an example, that is the most expensive Apple Watch you can buy. The most expensive iPhone you can buy is $1000 more than the Air.

The iPhone isn't a status symbol anymore anyway, at least in the US.

iPhone Air is just a shiny new toy that does the same thing every iPhone does but just neutered and costs more but hey shiny new toy and the novelty period won’t last long.

"no stereo speakers for speakerphone calls."
Seriously? Who needs stereo speakers for a phone call (which is monophonic)? And who listens to music over the phone speaker? I guess somebody must.

I got the air because I have a camera and it's far better than any phone camera. I listen to music on air pods or headphones. As long as that single speaker is loud enough, it'll be fine for speakerphone calls - and it won't take much to achieve that since I don't use the speakerphone in loud or public places. Given all that, I'll take the thinner lighter phone.

For other use cases, there is the 17, and the 17 Pro, which are pretty awesome. Some of us just don't need or want the additional capabilities though.
