Have to disagree with some of you. Hope they never allow third party Watchfaces, it’s the fundamental window to the product and would completely remove the watch cultural background. I mean, you can imagine people making awful Star Wars watchfaces.
What are you talking about? Lots of Apple's watch faces are terrible and tacky. And what cultural background are you talking about? How is a Mickey watch face better than a Star Wars themed one? Or those animated jellyfish/butterfly ones? And how is Nike related to the watch culture?

Watches are very personal devices and people want more customisation. The only reason they do it is so they can force people to buy certain models in order to acquire a certain type of watch face.

Ah yes, because the Toy Story face certainly carries elements of the cultural history of the watch...

Still no API for 3rd party watch faces . And not sure if the battery life improved any. If not, will leave opening for competition. Not that competition has focus.

A lot of truth in this. But also consider what the 3rd watch face apps out there are like. Hundreds, if not thousands of ripoffs of Rolex and other well-known brand faces. Apple would have to be the cop for all of those. Nightmare to manage.

Just look at Jing Watch as an example. Their marketplace consists of every trademark violation you can imagine.

They could curate the watch faces just as they curate app submissions. obvious copyright infringement would easily be weeded out.

It would be nice if we could just get some other designs, focused on more information rather than just apple's way or the highway. Even with the larger screens since the S4, the information is still limited because they have to cater for people of all kinds and people with worse eyesight as well.

I would like denser information, my eye sight is excellent.

Why don't Apple release a watch face designer so that you can design your own watch faces or download someone else's design (free) through the app store. You can do that on Samsung Watch and Google Watch OS and there are some awesome watch faces available on those.
Because it's Apple! It's not about what their customers want, it's about what Apple tell their customers they want.

yeah the new watch faces dont really do it for me. prob stick with the modular one I've been using for 5 years. Cant wait for my graphite to come in. should be a nice upgrade from my current aluminum series 2.

dont know whether to be happy that series 3 got one new face, or annoyed that they couldn't be arsed doing the other 6 for it.

s3 is still even with the new line up, still part of the present sales strategy so its a bit *****.

at least, the artist face looks to be the best one, but there's no reason whatsoever for the typography and stripes ones not to be available, for example. the others, maybe it wouldnt fit.

I'm totally there with you. Updated and saw the one face change and really wondered why for some of the more basic ones. Like Stripes is just an animated/static image, how hard can that be on the old S3.

I like the faces.

The diver's watch face needs a date number. A larger easily read number. Date numbers are too small on a typical diver's watch face.

Without increased water resistance and battery life, I don’t think I’ll be upgrading by series 4.

I really wish they would make some kind of "Watch Studio" app for Mac, iPad and iPhone which lets you really go completely custom on a watch face design, build it yourself, share it with friends via attachment in email or iMessage.

No need for them to make a store for them just give us the tool and let us go wild. I'd love that, I'm tired of using the faces they make.

Glacial speed of watch face delivery, 6 years now.

Apple: You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.

In all seriousness though Apple has always said what makes their company culture different is that saying no to the right things is just as important as saying yes to the right things. As I watched the keynote today and saw the demos for family setup and Fitness+ I was struck by how thoughtful the experiences are. I honestly don’t believe there is another company on the planet that could pull off that level of integration between hardware, software, and services. And Apple pulls it off year after year. If you missed it, Steven Sinofsky took to Twitter after the Apple silicon announcement and absolutely gushed over the execution of Apple as a company. The thread is worth a read.
All this to say, yeah. I wish my AW3 was getting the new stripes face. And I wish we had a watch face composer so I could craft the perfect face. But if I have to wait a couple more years for that because Apple is busy creating experiences that actually change what my next watch can do and how I will use it... I guess I can keep using the modular face for a while. Honestly I’ve gotten so used to it at this point that even if they had backported the stripes face I’d probably end up switching back to modular after a couple hours anyway.

Would have loved some sword hands - a bit like IWC or the classic 22.54 Seamaster
Apple has to be careful not to infringe on another company's design, though. Apple learned that lesson the hard way a few years ago, having to pay tens of millions of dollars to license the Swiss Railway clock design after initially copying it without permission.
