Here comes the snow!

I miss snow. We got maybe 10 minutes' worth last year. I can't wait to get out of here and move to someplace with proper seasons.

Not a gram of snow over hers, not even close.

It's even funny to see how people over here think that they will die of freezing when it gets close to 18 degrees Celsius, which is like the all time low :D

I'm heading over to Toronto in January - hope i get some snow!

Here in Oz its starting to get very warm, i miss winter. Even thou
it doesn't even compare to European and North American winters :(

Luis,

My wife and I are seriously considering retiring to Costa Rica. We have ~$3 Million in liquid assets and ~$4600/month in retirement income. I am concerned about medical costs, she is worried about bugs. Do you know any retirees, and how they have done there? Appreciate any info you may be able to share. Also. how is the technology infrastructure? I heard that high-speed internet is widely available. Is this true? If so, are the costs similar to ours? Finally, I heard Cheney's face is in all of the post offices. Is this also true?

Thanks,

SMM

I probably won't get any snow till late December :(

It's not snowed really good (by good I mean several feet) since the mid 90s. Those were the days...

Do you plan to retire to the city or to the beach? Bugs in the city should be no problem, however in the beach you will have to be more carefull as there is "Dengue" (don't know how it is said in english) in some places. However, it is just a matter of using an insect repellant, nothing to difficult.

As far as medical costs go, it depends on where you get them. There are many options but the costs I think can be compared to the US in good clinics, may even be cheaper. I know for certain that some things like dental care and plastic surgery are WAY cheaper over here.

Do you know any retirees, and how they have done there? Appreciate any info you may be able to share.

It is really a matter of personal taste. Some have come and loved it, but for others it is just to much chaos and they leave. Either way, if you decide on moving here I think you should probably come stay for some time before buying anything or making definitive choices, just to feel the ambient and get the feeling on how everything works, because it is definitely not for everybody and even more it is completely different of any city in the US. I am not sure if you have already been here, but if not, definitely come before making any choice.

Also. how is the technology infrastructure? I heard that high-speed internet is widely available. Is this true? If so, are the costs similar to ours?

Technology infrastructure is definitely not comparable to the US. High-speed internet is available yes, but service can be pretty bad and only in some locations does the service really work as it is intended to. For example, we had to switch ISP's like 2 times and ended up paying for WiMAX because it was the only reliable internet we could get. Again, if you decide to live in the city you have a better chance to get a better service, but in more remote areas it gets more complicated. As far as costs goes, they can be comparable to the US, although again depending on where you live or what service you get they can rise a lot.

Finally, I heard Cheney's face is in all of the post offices. Is this also true?

Um... not that I know of, never seen it.

Thanks,

SMM

Any more questions you have i'll be glad to answer!

Costa Rica is nice..I was there about 5 years ago.

We stayed in San Jose for a couple of nights, and I didn't like it much, even though I am a city person. I also stayed in Escazu, which isn't far from San Jose.

I think to get the 'Costa Rica feel' you gotta go to Montezuma!

Luis,

Thank-you for the information. I will take you up on your offer for more information. I am not sure that the other members will like to view the posts. May I contact you by PM, or email?

We are planning to make our move in 2010. So, we have plenty of time to plan. Ideally, I would like a 20-40 acre plantation, within 5 miles of the beach. I want to grow bananas, citrus fruit, avocados, etc. I want to cure my hang-overs, sitting on the beach, drinking fresh juice and playing my guitar.

We need to have a Pat's game in the snow..It's been a while

Dolphins are coming up on December 23rd. Lets hope for a foot of snow.

Before you leave - would you like to adopt a new son?

Back to original topic - it seems most people who live up North have the "oh (@&t, more snow" view.

Whereas most transplants and Southerners have the "yay! snow!" POV.

I wonder why that is. ;)

There was some snow here in Finland about a week ago, but it lasted only a day. Now it has been rainy for a couple of days :( .

Probably the worst time of the year: cold, wet and dark... Can't wait for more snow.

Where are you from dude?
Quito, Ecuador. We're at ~10,000 ft.

I don't like San Jose downtown... It is one of the things I'm not proud about......Did you like Escazu better? Where exactly did you stay?
We lived there for a year, but I'm sure a lot has changed since. San Francisco de Dos Rios. It wasn't the best place for long runs ::cough, cough:: with the buses, but sure was beautiful when the sun shone.

It's been snowing a lot in Southern Bavaria for the past 2 days. Radio at one point said 1-2 meters of snow over the weekend. Has since been adjusted to 20cm though.

Funny thing is, I go 30 km into Munich and there's no snow there, just cold wet rain.

Whichever you prefer...

So you got more planned than I expected, seems like you got your mind made up! I like the plan

Aw, I hope for some more snow now.
We got about one cm the last night(everything is white and beautiful today), but this night there is nothing. Just the flickering light of the half broken streetlight outside my window.
And the time is already 00.57..

I'm jealous, I'm one of those freaks who love the cold. :D

Your not a freak, I LOVE the cold and snow. I moved from NJ to VA 2 years ago, and haven't seen snow since (dustings don't count :)) All we get is ice, and not even much of that. I miss storms like this:

Im going to NJ for a long weekend in a few weeks, maybe it will snow while Im up there!

P.S. Has anyone seen my car, I could have swore I parked it around here somewhere? :D

I love winter, and would love to live where it actually snows in the winter. (Already making plans for Canada. :D)
