WTH was apple thinking by going with the 7.5W standard? Why wouldn't they enable the fastest wireless standard? They've waited all this time, may as well do it right!

Given Apple's strong environmental stance, especially concerning energy usage, it's bizarre to me that Apple has embraced wireless charging which loses 30-40% of the energy sent from the charger during the wireless transfer process.

I was actually confused about that footnote as well, to be completely honest. I couldn't make head or tails of it, so I just didn't mention it. So much of this Qi business is already convoluted.

Per Belkin's Boost Up mat on Apple.com: Charge through most cases - up to 3mm.

So presumably any fairly thin case will work with most of these mats.

Apple devices only support up to a maximum of 7.5w. Qi 1.2 (I believe) supports up to 15w but the iPhone doesn't support that. So the max we will see is 7.5w until the next iPhone maybe ;)

Convenient for late nights or public use, but I still think cable is superior, for faster charging and multiple cubic feet of use while charging.

I remember the days of Qi. I remember using it back in 2012 with my Nexus 4 (as my work phone, I still had an iPhone).

I remember how everyone said it was stupid, a gimmick, they don't get it. Apple will do it one day and when they do they will do it properly. Ahh a remember 2012 like it was yesterday...erm 5 years ago I mean.

Am I the only one that likes their Watch in nightstand mode? A simple bump of the nightstand in the middle of the night can tell me what time it is.

I would love to see a Qi charger for the Watch in nightstand mode and other devices on a mat just behind/above it. If not, I guess I will build one which is what I had to do for my current iPhone/Watch dock.

Many will still think its a gimmick and won't bother. But now that Apple has three devices that can charge wirelessly, the convenience has multiplied if you have two or three of them. Plug the pad in once, then no more fiddling with cables--just set your phone, headphone case and watch on the mat.

Seems rather convenient, but the extra cost won't be worth it to some (many?).

I almost bought a couple of the Aukeys last night because I had a coupon code that made them like $9.50/each (was going to get one black for nightstand and one white for desk at work) but then saw someone mention that it would make noise and realized that it charges faster than other wireless chargers. I was also considering the Anker, as I own and like many of their products, but thought the LEDs looked cheesy around the outside. Still might end up getting it since it's a good deal and people say the LEDs are dim. Wish they had it in white too. I was thinking it might be a good idea to wait since I'm getting an iPhone X anyway—and perhaps some better designs would come out for Apple products—but then I realized that all wireless chargers will probably go up in price now that the iPhone uses it.

Does anyone know if there are any chargers that can go through around a half-inch thick piece of plywood? I'm thinking about integrating one into the center console on my couch and my workshop table.

What I'd really like to see is a charging pad that looks aluminum and blends in with the base on the iMac with a flat silver cord that comes out the back that you can thread up into a USB port. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple integrates wireless chargers into future iMac bases.

These are fine to use if someone else is paying the bill or it’s in your car etc but using at home for charging is wasteful compared to direct USB connection, Qi is about 60-70% as effective as direct connect. Not much for one device, but imagine if you have, 3 devices. That’s like charging 4 devices. Now multiply that by a households worth.

Nice to have for top ups at coffee shops etc tho

There are Macrumor members who made fun of charging pads.

Where are you now on this?

Oh it's cool now ?
I’m for quick charging, not wireless charging. Although honestly to be able to charge 4 devices at once is a major step forward above what is available today. That’s a great Apple innovation.

I see myself buying an iPhone X, heck it would have been day one purchase for me but the fact that "fast charging adapters" is extra just ticked me off, and of course I can afford it but it's such a in your face move to not even include a feature move, not even in the "most expensive iPhone ever made".

I'm still getting the X, I know I should vote with my wallet but I'm probably going to buy and head on to 3-5 years of usage for the device to get my moneys worth. I thought of getting 7+/8+ but I think that X models will perhaps one day integrate, and even waiting for X+ makes me doubt that Apple will ease on the profit margin?

I never expected wireless charging to be bundled in, but fast charging adapter extra? F.U
Gotta wait till X'mas when offers and perhaps a few bundles start coming in.

Does anyone know what happened to that story on how Apple might entice buyers with AM & AppleCare included? Did we atlas get iCloud bump from 5 to 10? :(

Honestly my opinion doesn't change about wireless charging relating to one pad, one device. But I like the concept to have a wireless pod on my office desk that I charge 3 or 4 devices at the same time. As I plan on getting 2 AW 3s and an iphone 8+.

Wireless pads still cost, take up room, etc.

Public wireless charging I would never use as I would never put my phone down on one for easy pickings by a thief. So I really haven't changed my opinion about the way wireless charging is now on android devices, but the wireless apple pod is cool although for me it's a cool gadget rather than anything that makes my life easier.

Glad to see your arm twisting, at least slightly :D

I can only think of 2 main reasons...

1. It is arguably easier to just lay your phone on a mat than to fumble with a cable in the dark.
2. It looks cool and is more minimalistic.

When I used android it was pretty much #1 with slightly #2. Some nights your just -exhausted- or drunk, or whatever, and plugging in that cable becomes that much harder. I noticed with android that when I bought a wireless charger I almost never woke up in the morning without my phone charged, because where you place it becomes a habit, and where you place it charges it.

Come on now you didn't care for it.

You thought it was beneath Apple now look at them.
