Next step: Augmented Reality Goggles. It is only a matter of time before they figure out how to make a decent set. Probably only a few more years before we hear about them being in serious development.

PLNAR and Cubit are available, but you might need to got though their own websites.
They do show in search for me on the App Store but I could get them when going via their website. It appears there is something that causes those apps to flag as "requiring features not available on this device."

That's with an iPhone 7+ and the GM of IOS11

Since there really aren't any more 'next great things' left in computing, AR will have to be it for now and will get all the hype. At least it's an interesting curiosity.
When moving pictures were first being developed Thomas Edison's company patented much of the technology and set about shooting "actualities", or things as they happened. The original plan was to send out a team of cinematographers for 2-3 years at which time they would have shot on film everything there was to shoot. They really had no idea what the medium was capable of.

Sound familiar?

Oh come on. If you've been paying any attention you know that ARKit allows surface detection and all kinds of other tools to make the experience much, much better.

If you're interested I've got one game already up (it works both with and without AR), called Marbles AR (it's free). It already works with iOS 11 GM.

The other one is called Square Off AR and should become available very soon (pending with Apple). It won't be free (lowest price tier), but you can check it out on YouTube.

Very cool! My first ARKit app! Well done!

Problem though: Square Off says it's not completely compatible with my device (I have a 6S). Is there any reason why it wouldn't work? Marbles AR works beautifully.

All those apps aren't actually doing anything with the environment. They're just placing stuff on a flat surface. Why does it matter if your watching something on your real table or on a digital table?

AR should interact in a meaningful way with real life objects, not just stick things on surfaces.
You obviously don't know anything about ARKit then..

I just downloaded the update to Sky Guide, and it shows constellations in the sky outside my window. When I look away from the sky, there are no constellations. The old implementation just put stars absolutely everywhere, superimposing them over the floor, ceiling, etc. This one shows me the actual sky. That's meaningful interaction with the environment..

With the launch of iOS 11 today, Apple has turned hundreds of millions of iPhones into augmented reality-capable devices thanks to the support of a new developer framework called ARKit. With this technology, iOS developers can more easily craft AR experiences for users on compatible iPhones and iPads, using each device's built-in cameras, processors, and motion sensors.

As of now, the first wave of these apps are available for you to download and test on the iOS 11 App Store. The first apps range from game updates to practical everyday tools and even apps that encourage a healthier lifestyle, with more refined experiences likely coming in the future once developers get a grasp on what users enjoy with the first wave of apps.

Note that to use ARKit-enabled apps on iOS 11 you must have an iOS device with an A9, A10, or A11 processor. This means ARKit apps can be launched on iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the upcoming iPhone X. For iPads, you can use the 9.7-inch iPad or the 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro. The older 9.7-inch model of the iPad Pro is compatible as well.

One you have iOS 11 installed on one of these devices, head over to the new App Store and check out some of the ARKit apps listed below to see how Apple's new augmented reality technology works in your own home.

Splitter Critters (left) and Egg, Inc. (right)

Splitter Critters ($2.99)

- What's it about? Use swipes of your finger to split a colorful landscape and guide alien critters back to their spaceship, avoiding enemies and solving puzzles in the process.

- How's AR used? Scan a flat surface and then place a fully playable version of the main game into the real world, housed within a small white box.

Warhammer 40,000: Freeblade (Free)

- What's it about? Control an Imperial Knight war machine in the Warhammer 40,000 universe and fight the evil forces of Chaos through 170 single player missions using cannons, missiles, and thermal blasts to defeat your enemies.

- How's AR used? Drop your Imperial Knight from the main game into an AR "Photo Mode" to take snap shots of the war machine in the real world.

Egg, Inc. (Free)

- What's it about? A farming simulation game focused on hatching eggs, building hen houses, hiring drivers, and researching advanced technologies to upgrade your egg farm.
- How's AR used? Take a glimpse at your farm in AR with a "Farm To Table" picture-taking mode.

Thomas & Friends Minis (Free)

- What's it about? Build, decorate, paint, and create full train sets and then control characters from Thomas & Friends as you drive through your customized train set.

- How's AR used? Bring all of your creations into the real world with the app's AR mode, which places your train set on a flat surface so you can zoom in and around while still being able to interact with various tools and control characters.

I made something similar to the orrery but a bit cheaper.

AR has been on the app store for years with movie effects apple needs to stop thinking this is brand new

Apple has been releasing technologies in their products for years, people need to stop saying that Apple thinks these technologies are brand new.

Seriously, Apple never said AR was brand new. You are lying, you know you are lying, and we are calling you out on it. Stop lying.

Cubit IS on the App store, it's not showing up in searches, on my 2017 12inch iPad Pro, when I go to the direct link it says it won't function on my device, same for my 6S.

Check out Housecraft
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/housecraft/id1261483849?ls=1&mt=8

It lets you drop furniture down and then you can start a tornado and then everything you dropped takes flight!

Cubit - is not in the App Store - anyone having trouble.

I can’t find PLNAR either

Apparently despite my iPhone 7 being in the "Compatibility" list, the app store says it requires hardware not available on my device.

Still can download and run it (haven't tried it out fully yet though). Open the MacRumors post on your iPhone, then click the PLNAR link, then the "Open in App Store" link. You have to do it on your phone since iTunes no longer handles iOS apps on a Mac.

Sounds odd but AR might get me back to iPhone and into an iPhone 8... As a mechanical engineer there would be plenty of uses I could find for AR measuring apps and apps like the ikea placement but for CAD models of designs... Googles AR implementation just is not has polished as Apples...
