Great to have options. I love Liquid Glass. My parents probably won’t and that’s the reason I’ve held off on updating them.

Btw, and this might be an unpopular opinion. But, Apple should again, paywall the developer betas. The only reason this was such a big story in my opinion was because you had non-developers and non-techie people download the developer betas in June and then make TikToks about it and telling people how bad it was.

I hated paying the $99 fee every year, but I was happy too because I am an early adopter and I do like to test things before hand and I know what the word beta means lol
That’s EXACTLY why there’s a public beta and why you should never proofread your own writing.

That’s EXACTLY why there’s a public beta and why you should never proofread your own writing.

That’s my point. Ever since Apple allowed every Tom, Dick and Harry to have a free developer account essentially to access the betas, these people use DB1 as if it were the final release and how it’s gonna be after 3 months of updates, changes and fixes in September. Use the Public Beta when it’s available, that’s fine. But while nearly everyone here knows that DB1&2 are usually the most unstable, the general public doesn’t. Which is why they wait a month to release the Public Beta for the normal people.

It's the whole interface...the large back arrows, the massive curved radius of all windows, the waste of space with FaceTime now being tiled, the whole dark mode looks shocking overall. It's totally over the top. I mean, the control centre, why invent it when there is no touch screen for MacOS? The new system settings is a convoluted mess of now having to search to find a setting that you cannot remember the new name of..vs System preferences, basic pane where your visual memory knew where the network settings were for example ... and now you have to dig through layers and layers to do what used to be so simple. I don't want a fuxxxx iOS interface for Mac.

It's a Nightmare of absolute arrogance of indulgence and ignorance.
You're right, there are more UI element flaws in Tahoe than just transparency. My first annoyance was the larger curved radius for window corners, which made things look cheap, but that's gradually faded into the background for me. I don't use Facetime so I hadn't noticed its issues. Control Center in Tahoe mimicking its appearance in iOS and iPadOS, despite its originally being designed for a touch interface instead, is also annoying, but I try not to think about it. I don't use it for much anyway. If rumors are true about Apple releasing a touchscreen Macbook in a year or two, macOS's Control Center will be ready for it, I guess.

My bigger beef is the one you raise about the System Settings app: it's a mess. But that was true before Tahoe, starting with the redesign in Ventura in 2022 to make it like the Settings app in iOS/iPadOS. This might have been a workable interface if they'd done it right, but the way they've implemented it is clumsy. And as you say, searching for settings is a pain, especially since many or most of the named settings can't be found when you type them into the Settings app's search field. This seems so strange, since it should be a fairly simple task that even a programmer with medium skills would be able to fix it.

I expect we're going to see Apple walk this design back in the coming years. The entire design language is based on what's happening on Vision Pro which in itself is a product Apple is distancing itself from. Sure flat design is overdue for an evolution but this ain't it.

All the available options still have translucency to some degree, you can't turn that off. You also can't turn off the floating widgets that make it harder to discern content from controls. You can't turn off the glassy edges around icons, and other highlights that increase visual noise.
I believe you can turn off all translucency under the accessibility options, which behave differently to this new control.

I can understand why some won't like the floating UI elements. Having certain UI controls floating in isolation can seem out of place. In some cases, they can get disguised amongst the content when you're not expecting there to be a control in a specific place.

So glad tinted is an option now. It was barely legible in some apps.

I find this screenshot way more informative than the article itself. Why the hell is it a video, on YT no less, instead of a well written article with many many screenshots, showing the differences between sw versions? Really pathetic to put it on a money making platform.

More customization is always great.
I just don’t see the problem with Liquid Glass tbh.
Yes, iOS26 is not exactly the best update apple has released (for older devices in particular), but in my opinion Liquid Glass looks good.

I don't understand why the light mode liquid glass is so opaque compared to the dark mode. It's especially jarring in Safari when it goes to a light mode floating control at the bottom (even with dark mode on) and it barely lets the background color through at all. The harsh white gradient is also annoying.

This is “full” Liquid Glass but seems more like a bug?:

But but, the new entrance to the Louvre has been entirely made out of glass for many many years now!

Only controversy is NO OPTION to turn it off. I am sure some people like it and I have no problem with it. Me personally I do not like it at all. Just give us an option.

So many little things with these updates annoy me this time around. Like having to click the three dots in safari to see the open tabs option. The shrinking, glass URL bar that almost disappears on some web ages. Or choosing a workout on my AWU is now one extra step. Chang for change sake.

I was checking out a friend’s new Pixel 10 Pro XL and Android 16 is so clean and elegant compared to iOS 26.
The default Safari behaviour is annoying, thankfully you can set it back to how it was!
Go to Settings>Apps>Safari and then select "Bottom" under the Tabs heading.

You're welcome.

EDIT: TIP If you kept the new Safari UI, If you double tap the 3 dots, it takes you directly to the tabs view.
Though, I still prefer the old design, which as I said, you can restore.

Nice video. Good to have the option to change. I will definitely keep it in clear. Love the liquid glass.

Even Apple knows they screwed it up with this iOS Vista crap. But at this point they are in too deep and now enough people have been fired to roll this back.

It’s a start. Now another toggle to turn off the over the top animations everywhere. Embarrassing for Apple, who used to set the standard for good ui, that they completely ignored the most important rules for animations in UI

Apple is spending a LOT of time to this liquid-aqua-whatever and making sure that we can tweak this part of the GUI the way we want.
This does not show self-confidence, because if Apple was sure that this is the best and this is the way forward, they would give it to us and say "Here it is and it is wonderful!". Like Steve Jobs did.

Make Air drop 100% for starters and stop this nonsense.

Hurray!

Choice is good and in my opinion transparency affected legibility and accessibility.

This is one step toward me installing the latest os on my apple devices.

I want the option to sketch off transparency entirely across all my devices.

Liquid Glass looks beautiful on my iPhone Air. The design pairs extremely well with thin devices such as the OLED iPad Pro and iPhone Air. Hopefully, this option will give Apple the opportunity to take the Liquid Glass design further.
