Apple should unveil the iPhone 17 series in September, and there might be one bigger difference between the Pro and Pro Max models this year.

As always, the Pro Max model will be larger than the Pro model:
  • iPhone 17 Pro: 6.3-inch display
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 6.9-inch display
Given the Pro Max is physically larger than the Pro, it has more internal space, allowing for a larger battery and longer battery life. Nothing new.

It has been rumored that the Pro Max model will go one step further this year, though.

In March, it was rumored that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be approximately 5% thicker than the iPhone 16 Pro Max, likely in order to accommodate a larger battery. This would result in the iPhone 17 Pro Max having even longer battery life compared to the iPhone 17 Pro, which is not expected to be any thicker than the iPhone 16 Pro.

It was recently rumored that the iPhone 17 Pro Max's battery capacity will reach the 5,000 mAh mark, up from 4,676 mAh for the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

The thickness rumor originated from Ice Universe, an account with more than 1.5 million followers on Chinese social media platform Weibo. The account has previously shared accurate information about future Apple products.

In some years, the Pro Max gets some camera features before the Pro, but that is not expected to be the case this year. Both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are rumored to be equipped with a trio of 48-megapixel rear cameras, along with an upgraded 24-megapixel front camera. No camera differences have been rumored yet.

It was initially rumored that the iPhone 17 Pro Max might have a smaller Dynamic Island compared to the iPhone 17 Pro and earlier models, but it was later reported that such a change might not be happening until next year. Even if it does happen this year, one source said the smaller Dynamic Island would be on all iPhone 17 models.

All in all, the iPhone 17 Pro Max might be pretty similar to the iPhone 17 Pro, beyond its larger screen and even bigger lead in battery life.

I guess once Apple releases the specs I'll have a decision to make. I preferred the Max due to screen size, but need to look at the Pro screen for some extended time to see if that could suit me

Bring the thickness war back. That way, we can have, at least, the same hardware in a slimmer form factor. Doesn’t even need to be ultra thin - just thinner.

No compromise, thinner iPhone would be awesome. And with a modern rendition of the thickness war, it would encourage innovation.

This post hurts my head…here, let’s show you how to do a whacky post..

This must be a joke, in all the years I followed the iPhone progressing. Never complain actually on forums. But this is my last iPhone. I had enough of this company. Even the Macbook is so buggy all the time. The current management is way too old and are just focused on revenue, which is of course good. But it destroys why you want an Iphone in my opinion. I stil have a iPhone 12 Pro Max and my family members have a iPhone 16 pro max, The money you will pay for this iPhone 17 pro max is not longer defendable.

iOS 26 is a big joke as well. The so called Apple Intelligence is a big fat joke as it was when Siri came out. They are to afraid to completely get rid of Siri and it's time to do so. Sire will never competen agains competitors. The image playground is for children, you can do **** with it.

Oke am frustrated about this company and hope things will take a turn. But from my perspective and I was a die hard Linux user. Am going back. This is my last Macbook Pro and iPhone.

Now THIS! This is how you bring the whacky.

This is slated to be a major upgrade year, but if you have an iPhone 14 Pro or newer, you can likely wait, unless you really need the extra RAM and battery.

I personally will likely skip it and stick with the 16 Pro Max and extra year.

16 max is so great, isn’t it??

Massive achievement. Bravo. Chefs kiss, kudos, titanium? etc.

Which is the same as the 15. Based on the 14. Inspired by the 13.

Which comes from the 12 derived from the 11 etc etc. what’s your point exactly?? Each year is a better and improved iPhone, what is not to love?? Seriously.

Incremental upgrades could come once every 2 years and that’d be just as fine too..

Looks like a very minor year of upgrades for the pro line up, nothing wow or groundbreaking. The phone has become very stale the last few years. We should of had a smaller cut out island by now

Exactly minor camera improvements and more batt life and that’s it, still don’t get why the camera layout needs the bar now. Is it just to say it’s the new phone

I really preferred the size/weight of the 15 pro. I wish I hadn’t given it to my kids and kept it instead of upgrading to the 16 pro. I may go back to it if the 17 air isn’t to my liking.

I actually really liked the original iphone. thinner a the edges, thicker in the middle, but it had a nice curved easy to hold shape. if done right, you can thicken it up, and still make it easy to hold. I hated the sharp edges starting with the iphone 4.

Good.

And it's about time. iPhones are too thin already.

I'd MUCH rather have more battery than thin.

From a marketing perspective, Apple still doesn’t have the ultimate top-tier model the Ultra. I think the Pro Max could be renamed to Ultra or something else entirely, because “Max” sounds absolutely awful in an iPhone name. I still can’t understand how a name like that ever made it through. It sounds like something you’d see on a cereal box. But now both models need to have “Pro” in the name because the differences between them are so minimal. Still, they could at least be named Pro [screen size], like they did with the iPad Pro.

Personally, I like it when they keep the two pro iPhones as close together as they can. Only because I like the smaller iPhones and I hate the fact that I can't get a certain features on the smaller one. Not that I really care, but its the point of it...Lol. I just want all the features on the smaller iPhone. Not everyone likes the bigger iPhone.
That was my biggest peeve when they first did that with the 6 Plus, I believe, when they added OIS to it but not the regular 6. It remained exclusive to the Plus until the 7. Then the 7 Plus had the telephoto lens and Portrait mode. There were a handful more exclusives since then. I understand the difference in battery life and obviously screen size, but those should ever be the only differences between the two.

“So the people that can make the company more successful are sales and marketing people, and they end up running the companies. And the product people get driven out of the decision making forums, and the companies forget what it means to make great products. The product sensibility and the product genius that brought them to that monopolistic position gets rotted out by people running these companies that have no conception of a good product versus a bad product."

I'm currently on the 15 Pro Max and skipped the 16 Pro Max this year. I'll see if this year is worth upgrading or if I should wait for another year.

For the thickness and heaviness, I don't think that will be a dealbreaker for me, since I believe no matter what, it will be lighter than the stainless steel Pro models on the 14 series or earlier. I'm happy with the Titanium, just want to have a polished case like the Titanium Apple Watch Series 10.

Unless you are shooting LOG and RAW and using post-processing, you don’t need a “pro” iPhone, as this is a key differentiator with the “base” models.

My advice for getting a new smartphone is simply don't get a new one unless:

1) Your current iPhone is at least 3 years old or
2) The new iPhone has a new feature that you absolutely need or
3) You recently realized Google doesn't respect your privacy, and you want to replace your Android phone with an iPhone
1) 5 yrs (iPhone 13 rocks still)
2) Are there any?
3) Buy Jolla in that case. https://commerce.jolla.com/products/jolla-community-phone

There used to be a time, when we waited in suspense, not knowing what will be announced, ready to be surprised and awed by the ingenuity of Apple. Nowadays we compare unannounced products. Not cool.

It’s better than waiting in suspense and be shocked on top of being disappointed. This way we’re only disappointed, but not surprised.
