With dummy models of Apple's rumored foldable iPhone now circulating, YouTube channel Max Tech's Vadim Yuryev has shared images and video of the book-style form factor compared to existing Apple devices, giving us a better idea of what to expect when it launches later this year.

The foldable iPhone's inner display is said to have a 4:3 aspect ratio like an iPad, and it will have an iPad mini-sized OLED display when it's opened up. Most rumors say it will be 5.5 inches when closed, and 7.8 inches when open, making it a bit smaller than the 8.3-inch iPad mini (shown behind the dummy in the image above).

Compared to an iPhone 17 Pro Max in landscape orientation, Yurydev says the width of the foldable is basically the same, but it has a 56.9 percent taller display (71 mm vs. 111.5 mm). Yurydev suggests this will provide a more immersive video experience at 16:9 and will be "awesome" for gaming using onscreen controls.

Yurydev also shared a video showing what it might be like to interact with the outer display, which is probably smaller than many people will be expecting. According to The Information, it will measure just 5.3 inches – smaller than the 5.4-inch screen on the iPhone 13 mini – but that claim is an outlier, whereas most rumors put it at 5.5 inches. Either way, bigger hands may find it takes some getting used to.

Further images give us an idea of the side of the device when folded. A Touch ID-integrated power button and a Camera Control button can be seen set apart on the right side, with volume buttons along the top like the iPad mini. Face ID is not expected to feature because of space constraints, while Apple apparently sees Camera Control as a key feature for the device, enabling users to maintain a steady grip while making any required adjustments, or do so one-handed if they wish.

Note the raised camera bump or "plateau" that does not span across the entire back of the device. It houses a two-lens camera system, rather than three, which is expected.

Yurydev says his dummy unit is exactly 11mm thick when it's closed. That contrasts with rumors suggesting the foldable could be around 9mm to 9.5mm when closed. Yurydev stands by the accuracy of his dummy, saying it should be "spot on" like last year's iPhone 17 Pro units. Yurydev did not disclose the thickness of the unit when open, but if it is 4.5mm as some rumors claim, the foldable iPhone will be Apple's thinnest device by far.

Apple is expected to unveil the foldable iPhone in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models (shown above), whose dimensions are expected to remain identical to the iPhone 17 Pro series, albeit with a smaller Dynamic Island and – based on these dummies – a potentially thicker camera plateau with lenses that protrude more. Apple may call its first foldable "iPhone Ultra," according to an oft-reliable Chinese leaker.

Utter waste of time and money. No one is asking for this device and it's sooo ugly. Not a mass market device. Super expensive and impractical for anyone other than Tech Bros
no one was asking for cars...and we still got them and use them a lot
Dont say never until you try it, but remember you dont have to buy it...so if this isnt for you doesnt mean others will not love it...so waste of time and money for Apple ? one of the most profitable company in the world?! ok buddy

hmmmm wont the folded aspect ratio be all off? Seems strange compared to the other phones in the third picture, really short and wide. Idt this would feel great in a pocket

Oh and I just saw it sitting on top a mini in the first pic. I have a mini, the screen is pretty small, it mainly sits in the kitchen to look at recipes. I dont see myself using the fold as a productivity device, idk what id do with it.

Also, and thats a me thing, but id feel like a phone addicted jackass with that out and about.

seeing those extra rounded corners compared to the iPad Mini is driving me insane
it's funny to think you'll have a better time viewing letterboxed videos than 4:3

iPhone (5.7, 6.3, 6.9 inches, A20, USB-3)
iPhone Ultra (5.7, 6.3, 6.9 inches, one millimetre thicker than before, A20 Ultra, USB-4)

Apple Fold (5.5 to 7.8 inches, A20, USB-3)
Apple Fold Ultra (6.5 to 9.2 inches, three cameras, bigger battery, A20 Ultra, USB-4)

End production of all other iPhones. That will be all.

This Steve Jobs quote comes to mind: “Some people say, ‘Give customers what they want.’ But that’s not my approach. Our job is to figure out what they’re going to want before they do. I think Henry Ford once said, ‘If I’d asked customers what they wanted, they would have told me, “A faster horse!”‘ People don’t know what they want until you show it to them. That’s why I never rely on market research. Our task is to read things that are not yet on the page.” (From Walter Isaacson's Steve Jobs; Legacy chapter, but I don't have the exact page number right now).

1. If you don't want it, don't buy it. 2. There are people who want this; it hasn't been announced yet and you're already judging its looks? 3. Likely true. 4. "Super expensive" is subjective; impractical is also subjective, and only something "tech bros" want isn't true at all. I know several people who have folding smartphones (all Samsung devices) -- none of them are "tech bros" in the slightest.

Seeing it side by side with the others doesn't make it look as bad as I thought, but I'm still not sure how it's going work. Someone on here said that you'll be able to use the front screen when folded, but that's going to be a weird aspect ratio too, no?

Lots of people are asking for it. I, for example, have a coworker that left Apple (probably permanently) because they hadn't come out with a foldable. It's not for you, obviously, and it's not for me either, but to say "no one is asking for this" is just being obstinate.

I'm looking forward to going hands on with this. I am still using an OG Pixel fold as my android phone (also use an iPhone Air) and I love the form factor. I want a smallish phone that opens to a bigger phone/small tablet. Not a big phone that opens to an even bigger phone/ tablet.

Does anyone know what the weight will be like compared to the Pro and Pro Max? I'm desperate for a smaller phone, so if it isn't that heavy this could be my best shot.

It's still weird to continue to launch these niche products that "some" may want, but won't speak with their wallets (vision pro, iphone mini, fold).

I do think the fold looks bad ass, and it has me interested, but not at north of $2k (if priced like the competition). It can't just be a giant version of ios. It has to have some killer software.

It does feel odd to see. For me its a bit exciting to see something so different for iPhone.

The different aspect ratio does seem odd. But then I remember the pre-iPhone X phones. that front screen might feel quite similar to the iPhone 6 Plus 5.5" display.
