I wonder if the interface will change once the new operating system is announced in 25 days, considering they’re planning a redesign for iOS, iPad, Vision, MacOS, etc.

It appears quite impressive, though!

Let me know when the regular version is an available for people who drive Honda, Toyota, etc.
Toyota (Lexus) is always LAST.

Please come to my EV9 PLLLLLEAAASSSEEEE!!
I bet they’ll put it in the EV9 since that’s using the latest Hyundai/Kia hardware stack. I really doubt I’ll get it on my Ioniq 5 since it’s a 2023 model that’s missed out on some of the changes in the last few infotainment updates.

So.....Apple wants me to buy an Aston Martin to enjoy the latest CarPlay Ultra? Oh come on man!

Aside from what it looks like without a phone (which we all assume is some default Aston-Martin display), what happens to such a car's dash if you switch to Android? Is there some common standard by which an Android phone could address these screens as well or are you just SOL at that point?

Don't get me wrong, I like CarPlay a lot, but it's pretty clear that Apple is pouring all this effort into this in the name of platform lock-in. It adds another penalty to what would happen if you switched to another smartphone OS.
The car has it's Own OS with it's own UI. This is a 'wrapper' UI that runs on top of that, just like any CarPlay.

Unless Google launches a similar approach, Android Auto will be Android Auto. AML supports AA as well:

Everyone's talking about this being inaccessible, but that's always how it's been. CarPlay 1.0 came out in 2014 and I didn't get a car with it until 2019. This new system looks cool, and I'm looking forward to using it, but that won't be for a good long while. In the meantime there's nothing wrong with the car I've got now.

Exactly....I'm not going to go buy a new car just to get it, but it would sure influence what car I do buy when I'm in the market. I wouldn't even look at a GM product that doesn't at least have CarPlay Basic. Hoping the Hyundai group attract some customers because of it and that that influences others to jump on board.

Is Google creating an Android Auto Ultra?

At this point CarPlay does enough don't need more screens. Need increased stability and more integration with things like EV charging, Webex/Teams/Zoom/etc. This is the problem with development, flash before substance.
Sounds like you want in CarPlay video instead of the always supported audio? Yeah, that sounds super safe. You can always whip out your phone for that action today and still pipe audio to CarPlay.

As it is, I have iDrive and CarPlay running in parallel in my car; I resorted to giving Siri an English accent so I could keep track of which system was doing what. Fun times...

I honestly don't think CarPlay looks great. It is functional, but aesthetically it is not all that exciting in the car. Hard to tell from the video as well, but it also does not look super fluid and smooth comparing to a Tesla UI which is butter smooth from the company cars we have and some demos I have taken. When does CarPlay just come installed in a car and your phone is not even needed outside of maybe supplying the data connection for things that need data?

CarPlay can’t even interact well with Roon ARC, let alone do more important things, not to mention its terrible, non-customizable interface.
So it’s actually great that only new Astons can use that new thing, i.e. the dozens of customers able to buy them.

Merc CEO actively stopping Apple from helping them selling cars. Hideous, is a word you could use to describe Merc software. OMG it's so ugly and bad.

Looks so lame. I like buttons and knobs with tactile feedback that I can control with muscle memory. The last thing I want is more screens to control basic function like heat. Sounds insanely unsafe.

No they don't. They say more info is being fed to Carplay like sensors and also data from back camera etc as well.

The processing is still done by the iPhone.
Check out the Top Gear video. They said that even without the phone connected, the UI looks like CarPlay. It seems like it is a skin on top of the infotainment OS and some features require the iPhone connection.

It's okay, but not user friendly. I ended up with a rental Mercedes not long ago. It took me a solid 5-10 minutes to figure out how to work everything I needed for a long drive ahead. Most cars I can get in and figure out in seconds, but having to pull out the manual to figure out basic functions is simply bad UI design. Mercedes needs a UI overhaul for their cars. Once you learn everything, it's okay, but other companies figure out how to cut down on the learning curve.
