While BMW iDrive 7-8 might absolutely blow, the gauges make me feel like I'm driving a sporty car... and not looking at Apple watch face dials reused in my instrument cluster.

CarPlay "Ultra" looks so basic and unfinished.

That BMW interface is a hideous nightmare of fail. The Apple interface is infinitely more user friendly and easier on the eyes. You don’t want craziness going on while driving. Minimalism FTW

Check out the Top Gear video. They said that even without the phone connected, the UI looks like CarPlay. It seems like it is a skin on top of the infotainment OS and some features require the iPhone connection.
I did - the fact that UI looks the same does not warrant any connection that CarPlay is replacing the OS. You can check the video of MrJWW to see the actual UI of the OS. Maybe Aston did not want the car to feel so much different vsa the CarPlay Ultra experience and tweaked the OS UI to it.

CarPlay has always been a skin (Wrapper) that runs on top of any car OS. This one is only different where it has wider access to the car's controls.

https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2024/10111/ here it's explained, CarPlay Ultra has some components rendered by the car OS and some streamed from the iPhone.

Sounds like you want in CarPlay video instead of the always supported audio? Yeah, that sounds super safe. You can always whip out your phone for that action today and still pipe audio to CarPlay.
Nope just more control instead of the simple call, like texting integration for messaging, ability to start a call.
You can already do an audio-only Zoom in CarPlay. Not sure about the others.

If you're asking for video, how would that work exactly?
Wouldn't want video but more functions.
It integrates with the car itself so you can do things like change climate control through CarPlay
Fully aware, just not exciting or innovative, more of a who cares feature.

Ah, gotcha. I generally just join meetings already in my calendar (and yes, I've also had my phone screen on to show slides, so I do suck), but are you talking about creating a meeting in the CarPlay UI? I've never even looked to start the Teams app from the CarPlay, but will next time.
