The absolute best and unobtrusive volume indicator is that of the reddit app, Apollo. There is no reason why Apple needs to insist on first a fat indicator, then a thinner indicator, and then yet another thinner indicator.

Take. it. out. of. the. way. en-ti-re-ly.

So they have the resources to devote to this -- but can't be bothered to implement a volume limit? Grrr.

Note: not a headphone volume limit, not a music volume limit. A device volume limit behind a PIN. Kids with disabilities depend on iDevices but can't always understand the need to keep the volume reasonable.
It has more to do with a system wide volume limiter so ringtone volume for example, won’t blast. But, music volume limit is probably the most critical one anyway.
And, time for individual parent to assume responsibility and actually TEACH your child to limit the volume. Why nowadays parents want tech companies to help controlling their children’s behaviour is beyond me.

This is a vast improvement but only because the current volume indicator is laughably poor design, it's still much more intrusive for no apparent reason than most other custom volume indicators.

Why do we even need to see the volume indicator on screen at all? It's in control centre if you really want to see an arbitrary visual indicator of how loud the sound is.

Agreed. How about the 'option' to have the visual indicator either on or off ?

Oh, I forgot, Apple doesn't like providing personal preference for the user...

Usually you don't really wait after pressing the volume button, so i'm pretty sure it will almost instantly go to the narrow bar if you just keep pressing.

Putting it vertically on the left is not really symmetrical; why can’t they have it horizontally at the top in both landscape and portrait orientations?

Never understood the hate for the previous volume HUD. Not that I mind this new one, either. It's just a volume indicator, people!
For me (and maybe others) the most common scenario for finding the volume HUD annoying is showing someone a short 10 second or less video on your phone, realising your audio is on mute, so you turn up the volume as it plays and block out most of the video for duration of the volume HUD, necessitating you play the video again, ruining the moment.

Does the fat one also appear when you use the side buttons to adjust the volume? That is just silly. I would get it if the iPhone didn’t have physical buttons to adjust the volume

Seems like quite an awkward design from Apple, to me; I'd bet it changes before final release.

I feel like this is a case of a solution in search of a problem, as the volume indicator hasn't bothered me over the past 10 years of my iOS use.

Watch some video on your iPhone, and you will get the picture. Most of the time that archaic square is totally breaking up your visual flow, not to mention the time it hangs in there.

Some apps - like Reuters - were smartly developed to not include the stock HUD during video playback. It is undeniably bulky, and it's a very odd thing that Appple improves that user experience on iPhones only this late.

I never paid much attention to it either.
Remember, we live in a nitpicking era. Everything needs to be "perfect"
I don't think it's really much about something like that, and more about it getting in the way in quite a few situations.

Seems like it's there to be more or less aligned with the physical volume buttons.

Why? The point of that is to give you feedback in response to the use of the physical buttons and to show you the level that you are changing it to.

Would be nice if it follows the location and direction of the volume buttons
Seems like that's essentially how this new design has been set up.

Because of the newer phones with notches maybe? Also, it's supposed to be "aligned" with the physical buttons. It should be there in landscape too though.

And please let us change it to always thin! This thick bar at first press is so unnecessary and ugly, half way covering icons and all – why??

Oh okay I don’t have an iphone but the hud location in the screenshot seems to be very centered. Would love to see how it is on the iPad landscape mode!

Edit: what I meant is the hud should be aligned and fixed with the volume buttons location and the graphical changes for volume should change according to the direction of the up/down button. I’m nitpicking but i think it just looks nicer that way.

On iPadOS...

it displays text when you are interacting with it as shown in the first screenshot.
Ok the text is ugly. Hopefully they’ll change it.

Now they just need to make sure home bar is always at the bottom. Extremely annoying when the home bar and subsequent slide actions too close to the home bar disrupts the game play.

Especially when in the first versions it was far at the bottom and didn’t interfere with e.g. clicking links in Safari in landscape mode, or scrolling down a web page or any other close to the bottom activity. Now it feels like 25% of the screen is blocked from working by it.

But wouldn’t the slim bar be enough if you are using the side buttons to change the volume anyway? I get it if you want to change the volume via touch to have a bigger touch area.

Overall Instagram implemented it best

This is all well and good. But IMO the biggest issue with volume adjustment in iOS (since forever) is the confusion and lack of predictability when it comes to adjusting either the general system volume or the ringer and alerts volume. I change the ringer volume often, so I check 'Change with Buttons' in Settings. iOS tries to determine the intended volume type based on context, but it doesn't always get it right.

Why can't we change both from Control Center? I've never understood why we can't, at the very least, see both volume controls (general system volume and ringer volume) by long-pressing on the volume indicator. Instead, we just get a bigger version of the system volume indicator, surrounded by empty space. It seems like a no-brainer to me.

This is why.
