Few car makers will admit to working with Apple because of their insane confidentiality breach clauses, the lesser of which being dismembering your whole family (+ fees).
Apart from that, normal people have no reason to invite attention business and screen dependency into their cars.

What automaker would be brave enough to put this in their car and then if the software is buggy and causes an issue like a speeding fine or faulty real time info, who gets the blame? Seems like it will be the driver, not the manufactuer or apple because of the terms and conditions. In such a litigious climate I wonder what lawsuits and weird things will crawl out of the woodwork once this is in use.

That's precious. You don't think there's valuable user data in how you drive your car, where you travel to, what media you consume, on and on.

Honestly, please think about it and do some research. That data is tremendously valuable for many, many industries.
And it's more than just data. Here's Mercedes basically adding ads to their maps. So if you're not using the MBUX maps, there's nothing for them to sell.

It's unfortunate to see automakers give control over to Apple and Google instead of developing their own proprietary interfaces. Porsche's PCM version 3, up through the mid 2010's was the pinnacle of user-centered design. CarPlay is a degraded experience that's laggy and unreliable. I want my car nav to be just that - a nav system that's built-in, always there, and ready to go.

Is it wrong that I'm a bit weary of it? What happens if my phone software becomes unresponsive? How good is the switchover to the car's builtin system?
You're right on. The connection is laggy, it doesn't always work, and it interferes with any built-in functions. I get messages like "another device is trying to display data" because CarPlay is interjecting itself into the native system. Keep CarPlay away from your driving experience and you'll be better off.

I love tech but the screens have gone too far in my opinion. We need buttons that allow us to change things in the car while keeping our eyes on the road. Many cars I have seen just have bigger icons or a lot of white space filling up huge screens. I just don’t see the need.

Voice commands fixes buttons AND screens.

No, they dont, not unless you always drive alone (and definitely if you never have kids in the car)

Cars need buttons for the same reason controls on large industrial equipment are huge bulky buttons: tactile access and feedback lets you use controls without taking your eyes off the road - and works even if your nephew and niece are belting out frozen in the back seat (I speak from personal experience)

Yeah, I don't have those issues. To each their own their own I guess. If it doesn't work for you, it doesn't. If it works for me, it does. Maybe just have all options?
