Can’t do it all at once, I guess. Especially since so much of the engineering that goes into the phones is similar to the Mac now. Everything is on the same OS underpinnings, same processors, etc. So it kinda (now) makes sense to draw from one pool of talent when making changes. Work on the phones, flip over to the Mac’s for a while, then back to the phones. Each product cycle builds on experience from the last. It doubles the rate at which the technology evolves because it’s now single stream.

I got a new MBP M1 in July. I didn’t really need it, I just hated the butterfly keyboard of my old MBP. It was more a gift to myself for 4 years of sobriety, so I guess I’m rationalizing.

I got an iPhone 14PM from a 13PM because my carrier offered it with no change in my bill a a reasonable upgrade fee if I send them the old one. It should be here Monday, and I’m looking forward to the new features.

There’s not a lot of outward changes, but my father who was a mechanic told me when he showed me how to work on cars “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

Sometimes change for change’s sake leads to many more problems than it’s worth…
Rationalization or not, congrats on your 4 years of sobriety. That’s a huge milestone.

Don't you see?!?!?!? Instead of selling eleventy million iPhones, Apple is missing out on their chance to sell eleventy million and five!!!
and this is totally worth the millions of people who would go nuts that apple is changing cables again for "no reason" who see no practical benefit from USBC

You were denied a replacement, warranty service, or a full refund on a week-old Apple laptop?

Did you elevate that situation to Apple corporate? What was their response and reasoning?
Yeah...at least in store. It was a Macbook Air and i had it for about a week and the key broke on it. I could understand if i was being rough with it but I was babying that laptop like i suppose many do with a new product especially of that price!

When i went to press the key down it was stuck. The clip (?) on the back of the key had snapped off and that was what was stopping it being pressed down. I managed to shake the piece of plastic out and could use the key again but of course the key was now very loose. Took it to the apple store and the guy took it round the back to look at it and came back to tell me there was nothing wrong with it lol (edit: oh and he scratched the aluminium around the key when he was round the back)

I didn't get anywhere with Apple at the store so as I had bought it online I sent it back and told them to give me my money back. They did offer a replacement but if I'm spending that kind of money I expect better quality and service.

This was years ago. I suppose if you go back far enough you will see my post from the time. I'd like to get a Macbook again. I know they are very popular devices and what i experience was unusual but it pissed me off and made be hesitant about buying another especially as they haven't got any cheaper lol.

Does anyone think Apple will rush out new 14"/16" MBPs barely a year later?
Yes. I absolutely think Apple will bring 14"/16" M2 MBPs almost two years after the first M1 MBP was announced 11/2020. We already have M2 MBPs in 13" size and in the low-end MBA. Expect an M2 14"/16" MBP announcement in October.

I hope they fix the new lock screen being blurry (especially the astronomy ones).
It's not a phone problem, as it happens both on my iPhone 13 and 14 Pro.

Looking forward to a 14" MBP with M2-Pro processor. Dreading the unsurprising price increase of about 20% for Europe.
Don't pin your 2022 hopes on that. The Apple SoC rollout hasn't been that fast, example M1 first showed up November 2020, with the late Oct 2021 keynote introduced the M1 Pro/M1 Max. The you had the M1 Ultra March 2022.
The M2 announcement was fairly recent in June 6 2022.

What about the $400–$500 discounts we're seeing on the M1 Pro/Max 14"/16" MBP's from B&H, which is a major Apple-authorized retailer—doesn't that suggest M2 versions are coming within the next couple of months?

From the article: "but the iPhone 14 Plus is a brand new option in the lineup and will become the first non-Pro model with a large 6.7-inch display ever sold."

It's so weird to read this because it doesn't feel like that at all. It feels like there's always been Plus options, just in relation to whatever size was beneath it. XR was like that, even though there wasn't a small phone below it.

It's weird the way the sizes oscillate from being small to large - like the iPhone Mini - it's just shy of being the same size as the old 6, 7 and 8 Plus, which is crazy. And the iPhone 11, even though it didn't have a baby sibling, was actually larger than the 11 Pro adjacent to it.

On another note - was in the store the other day checking out all the 14 models, and I couldn't help but feel they paled in elegance compared to the 11 Pro. I still have one and the curved steel bands look so luxurious, the new iPhones felt and looked sort of tacky and cheap to me.

I have accumulated many Apple 5W, 12W, and 30W chargers over the years, letting me choose how fast I want to charge my 14 ProMax.

If my phone were USB-C there would be no difference. Other than having a less mechanically robust connector.
Which wouldn’t be an issue since everything else that we use has USB-C and we now have more USB-C cables lying around than Lightning.

Which also means they can choose to not ship the charger AND cable and I can still charge my phone.

But more importantly USB-C can supply more power, which means I can plug in my CFexpress card readers without having to plug in power separately like we have to currently with the Lightning to USB3 adapter. 4D76470C-B971-49B0-9C14-53D2FF5B8ECF.png

Thats more of the marketplace matching the USA EDU discounts. Heck saw Costco selling 14"/16" MBPs equivalent to EDU pricing fairly quickly after they became available last Fall, so B&H example is just what occurs after a model has been available for some time.

Example EDU price for M1 Max 16" is $3199, that was what it was right from its first availability. B&H is selling same model for $3099. The listings all have "Limited supply at this price" so it's a temporary sale discount of an extra $100.

Is this suggesting M2 Versions within the next couple of months, nah! ;)

I dunno:

1) I don't have price tracking to confirm this but, from what I've seen, B&H pricing doesn't go lower than standard educational pricing unless you're close to the end of a product cycle.

2) Consistent with this, B&H's pricing on the M2 Air is the about the same ($10 lower in one case) to $50 higher than educational pricing.

I.e., it's only the 14"/16" that are being sold for significantly under educational pricing.

So I'm inclined to view this as suggesting the end of the product cycle for the 14"/16" MBP—but we shall see!

I’ll pay an extra $200 next year if they keep it Lightning or go portless. I’m sure Apple is just as sick of hearing this than the rest of us.

👊😜👍
They're not against it, in fact here is Apple bragging about USB-C like the iPhone doesn't exist, multiple times on the same page:

Official sale of HomePods from Apple with native language support in many European countries. They are available from 3rd party suppliers but no Siri in several languages (even though it is available on iOS iPadOS and MacOS)

I have a feeling the October event will be held exactly six weeks after the September event. Therefore, October the 19th it is then...
I’m guessing sooner than that — maybe October 11? Since they had the iPhone earlier, I’m hoping they have this next event earlier. I suppose it somewhat depends on the progress of iPadOS and macOS…

Well I think it's safe to ponder that the 13" M2 MBP was not a comparable product to the 13" M2 MBA. It's has a slightly smaller display 13.3" compared to 13.6" on the MBA. It has a 720p FaceTime HD camera when it should have been a 1080p FaceTime HD camera. It only has Stereo speakers compared to the MBA's Four-speaker sound system.

So while I think the 14"/16" 2021 MBP are stellar laptop products, the 2021 13" M2 MBP looks like a rush job of sticking a M2 SoC in it. So yeah I think a year later, Apple needs an update to this model.
Keep drinking that Apple cool aid 😂

It is called a Studio.
Studio is far too big and too noisy and total overkill for me thx

I want something very small and sleek and silent I can plug into an av amp or put under a tv

The mini has lots of wasted space in it , hopefully the new one will be even smaller and sleeker , speed not bothered as my M1 Mini is like a rocket already , M2 seems to be more about power efficiency anyway

I remember early on with m1 macs being tested that a YouTuber gave a example of fairly long 4K video using multiple tracks that simply ran out of memory after approximately 30 mins, so the M2 supporting 24 GB RAM is actually what a lot of M1 users desired. As for the studio, I think its pricing with studio display is very expensive, and only the 24” iMac as a desktop is your only other choice for a desktop besides the Mac Mini. If I could make on criticism of Apple it’s concerning utter lack of desktop choices presently. Hope this fall brings more choices.

Is a Mac Mini with M2 Pro and 16GB memory on base model too much to hope for? :(
Don't know if the next Mini will be M2 or M3, but I think there's a decent possibility we'll see a Pro Mini, since it would serve as a direct replacement for the Intel Mini--for those who need more power, RAM, and connectivity/display support than what the base Mini offers, but want to stay with that same form factor (like, perhaps, MacStadium and others that have large Mini installations) (though the Mini server farms obviously don't need the display support part of it). Yes, it would be close in price to a Max Studio, but probably no closer than an Air is to a 14" MBP.
