Will non-camera apps be able to use this for control? I'm not even sure what they would be yet, but I'm sure some imaginative dev or designer could come up with something.
Zoom control on maps and weather maps? That would be nice or zoom the screen, adjust text size on the fly. Sometimes I need the font a little bigger, if I could swipe that would be helpful.

Disagree.

For example. Plug your iPhone into a Thunderbolt enabled monitor, instantly it becomes an iPad type screen experience, it attaches to your Bluetooth input devices and bang your can do limited type desktop work for comfort.

That might be peak iPhone

You can do that already - I forgot to bring my laptop into work one day, all I had was an external keyboard connected to a widescreen display, an apple mouse and my iPhone 15 Pro.

We use virtual desktops for our PC's here. Installed the App (Horizon in my case) on my phone. Connected my iPhone to the monitor, fired up the App and logged in to the Virtual Machine. Used Assisted Touch to connect my Apple mouse to my iPhone. I ran the Windows VM full screen on a 35" widescreen display and managed to do a full days work, just using the iPhone. People that came into my office amazed that I could work from a Phone and run full screen on a 35" monitor.

To be honest Assisted Touch is not ideal compared to a conventional mouse pointer, but it got the job done for a day.

Just set it up again, iPhone 15 running windows VM full screen picture below.

so then given, at a pinch, you managed to make it work with current tech solution, doesnt that mean MOST people have devices that have peaked?

sure there will always be a tech person who appreciates advances but for most people these phones take better photos and videos than they will ever need. the screens are big and bright. batteries last ages. that's why they are everywhere. it's why people feel cutoff if they dont have their phone in their hands or pockets. theyre essential to modern life. already.

from here we just tinker at the edges... a few megapixels more res, better low light images, an added button. nothing drastic. more likely, OS or software options. at least until we shift devices totally...

Surely you are not sarcastically implying that this trillion dollar company is basically selling us the same iPhone from 2 or 3 years ago with with minor updates that all Chinese brands have since forever including no notch, on screen Touch ID, 10x cameras, faster charging, longer battery life, 120hz screens in lower tiers, foldable screens, etc. right?. That would be sooooo not accurate ;)
Can you please identify a Chinese phone that has longer battery life with the same performance of the iPhone 15 Pro Max?

Then, also tell us which phone has an LTPO with 1-120Hz refresh rate in "lower tiers"?

Do you understand that the reason why there is no "on-screen Touch ID" is because we have FaceID? Being that said, can you indicate which is the phone that has equivalent-FaceID tech without using a notch?

And, what's the phone (Chinese, so no Samsung please) that has 10X optical?

Almost seems like this was what they wanted last year on the Pros, and when it didn't work out in testing or production, they made that hole in the phone into the action button.

And, they couldn't drop the action button after a year, so another button it is.

Definitely specific types of engineers are ruling the roost over designers these days at Apple.
Guess they did that, instead of bringing that button just because it was added to the Apple Watch first.

LOL, the level of conspiracy of some people is very intriguing.

If you have a Thunderbolt monitor, you must probably have proper hardware like a Mac Mini, PC Tower OR a device that's actually designed to work in conjuction, not a phone.

And NO, please do not bring the Samsung DEX to the conversation, people that have used DEX for daily use (instead of demoing 5 minutes for a 15 minute youtube review), know that DEX will get phone warm, that depending on the screen the resolution might look like QVGA, etc.

So, while some people want to pretend and convince others that DEX is the last thing, it is actually not that great.

Camera function is probably my number #1 function on iPhone. Anything that can help me take better pictures is welcome. I love it. Goodbye to the last point and shoot cameras.

This was my thought also, OR perhaps update the Action button for Touch ID.
It's not clear that a narrow button would capture enough area of a finger print to make an accurate identification. I speculate there would be too many false positives or negatives.

All businesses love that you don’t understand that you paid full price, not just Apple.
I paid full price once. You clearly have never bought a car and did a trade in.

Edit: You seem to not understand how trade equity works. Yes, Apple gets the full amount for the new phone, but I don't pay full amount in the end.

No thanks.... their idea of innovation has really gone downhill.

I just want a camera that works well. Why can't we have that Apple?
My first Pro Max I bought specifically for the camera, yet it was the worst camera I'd ever had, leaving lens flares everywhere, causing me to stop using its camera for anything.

My current Pro Max 15 endlessly infuriates me. It decides it wants to do 5-second long photo stacking for "dark environments" when I really just want to take a quick photo of bright white text on a black background (recording mileage in my car). It also can't seem to judge distance because it always takes it a couple seconds to focus on something close in front of you.

Why can't I have a camera that I can just point and click and get a photo without holding my phone still for 5 or 10 seconds? This is beyond ridiculous.

I am done ever buying another iPhone under the guise of "it has better cameras".

How to say you don't understand camera tech without saying you don't understand it. All point and shot cameras have this issue.

So this is the ‘Dynamic Island’ moment for iPhone 16 Pro. This button is supposed to make us want upgrade our iPhones with the rest of the phone being relatively the same.

They made this thing way too confusing to use. Too many functions hidden behind too many tap patterns. I can see this going the way of 3D touch in a few years, being replaced with an easy 2-stage button for focus and capture.

Yeah agreed.

Ah it's even worse. The problem with the phones is the zoom is useless as it's got 2 or 3 crappy prime lenses with distortion correction and digital interpolation between those lenses which mutilates stuff. So just a shutter button is probably good enough. Half press to lock focus on object, full press to take photo.

What is also going to be annoying is it's going to knock the prices up of cases and I'm not sure how this is going to work with the rather large ruggedised cases I use in places I actually want to take photos and don't want to lug my mirrorless (up mountains and stuff).

A trade-in does not lower the price you pay for a product. It merely liquidates the unleveraged equity in the traded asset, which you already paid for and own. Using it never changed the price on the product. It merely changed the sources of where your payment came from.

I fully understand that, but in the end I don't pay full price with cash and able to leverage the equity to save money.

You can leverage better equity by selling it on eBay and not involve a tri-party negotiation on what it's worth after you've sent it in.

I love this capture button! Apple is so so good at hardware like this. It's really their software that's lacking.

This is just splitting hairs, it doesn't matter how you levarge the equity.
