If you can find either the packaging or the product on their web pages you'll see it's power and data speed ratings. But I believe the difference is a combination of some tiny electronics in the end connector combined with things like wire size
Is there a way to test cables for their speed?

I have never come across a company more than apple where if you were to explain to your friends what all of this means you absolutely just couldn't. Frankly they are the most penny pinching absolutely good damn frusting company I know. I was so amped for them to give us 45 watt. And talk about E waste. The included cable isn't a 3.0 capable cable? Are you kidding me? Idk why this makes me so upset but hearing the included cable is 2.0 and their talk about being eco minded company is two faced. Because now you have to buy a new cable. And I'm just sick of it year after year after year. This is 2bwha cable! You need the sx123 one! Insanity. DONE

Good to see faster MagSafe charging. Both, a new power adapter and a new MagSafe charger will be required though. Also good to see that there is a longer 2m MagSafe charger now available.

Slower the charger, less stress / heat on the battery and such for overall longevity. I still use an old USB-A brick from the iPhone 7 era, and a USB-A to C cable. My iPhone 15 Pro still has 100% capacity after well over 250 cycles and nearly always charging to only 80% max.

I also never did inductive "Wireless" charging with that phone. Too much loss, heat buildup is also not great for the cells.
^^ Agree... Doing the same thing. I occasionally charge via magsafe at the office. I have an iPhone 13 and still have a battery life of 83%. The less stress the battery the longer the life it will have.

Does everyone know that the new MagSafe puck (25W) is a different size from the previous (15W) one?
So if you have products with the old magsafe puck snapped into them the new one may not fit. It's the same diameter but it's thinner. I tried this with a phone stand I have and it doesn't fit!

Other phone brands have the ability to switch off fast charging and wireless fast charging in settings. Doesn't make sense why Apple hasn't implemented something similar yet. That way you can just use whatever brick you want and not obsess about battery care.

I have Bose, Dewalt, Samsung and Pixel devices that I've fast charged since day one for over 8 years and they're all performing fine. I care more about the battery in my UPS and alarm system more than the phone.

Based on some of the signatures I see here you guys don't keep them long enough to experience significant degradation anyway.

Cheapskates including a USB2 speed cable in the box

USB 3 cables are thicker and bulkier, so less convenient as a charging cable. The higher speeds are also shorter (although the Apple charger cable isn’t long).

Edit: you may not like that, Apple Mac Daz, but it’s pretty much a fact. Compare the cables yourself.

It is now widely recognized that every USB-C cable must include dedicated wires for USB 2.0. However, the cables you got is for USB-PD (Power Delivery), enabling charging over 2.5W. Consequently, USB-PD and USB 2.0 wires are now present in this cable. When purchasing a USB 3 cable, users can expect to find wires for USB 3.0 and USB 2.0.

Edit:

Upon further examination of the USB-PD cable, I discovered that the D+/D- (USB 2.0) wires are not mandatory. This suggests that this cables are intended for use with a power adapter that is connected via a cable.
In this regard, Apple provides an “only” USB 2.0 cable as an additional feature.
However, USB-C 3.0/3.1 cables do require the D+/D- (USB 2.0) wires but not the CC wire for USB-PD. The minimum power requirement is only 4.5W.

But USB4, Thunderbolt 3 do. This inconsistency creates confusion and unnecessary complexity.

*Fast Charging requires a subscription to Apple Volt. Compatible charger and cable required. Costs may vary per region.

For those from the UK i highly recommend these 2 30w and 65w multiport GaN chargers from Volt Me (as an alternative to more expensive Anker/U Green GaN chargers).

Apple isn't targeting tech nerds like us on fan forums. They're targeting the "average" person who will walk into an Apple Store, ask for a "fast charger" and pay whatever the charge for an adequate solution.

That person doesn't know or care about 15w vs. 20w vs. 30w so you'd never need to explain any of this to them, and Apple makes more $$ selling them cheaper (first party) stuff for more.

Apparently the new 25W MagSafe charger has the same name as the old 15W MagSafe charger. This confusion will multiply when Belkin, Anker etc. come out with their own products that meet the new specs. MagSafe2 would have been better, imo. Even Apple's website contains a mix of 15W and 25W MagSafe products, and you have to read the product info to tell which is which.

Can I look at an Apple MagSafe charger (out of the packaging) and easily tell if it's 15W or 25W?

For example, I had a dripping shower. I ordered a cartridge from Moen. I'm no plumber, but I tried to replace it myself. It did not fit. I called Moen and was told that they had increased the length of the part without changing the part number. I had been shipped the new part but needed the old part. To be able to turn the water back on I had to call a plumber who had the old part on hand. I was out $250 because of this. But I digress...

Correct. But the more watts, the hotter it gets and the quicker it gets hot. That’s just science.
Exactly. That’s why I don’t like fast charging or MagSafe. If your use case requires it, then fine and it’s good that it’s available. I personally just charge with a slow charger every night before bed and that works great for me.

Could you not have out the old cartridge back in to do while you sourced the correct one?
