CarPlay didn't receive much attention during the WWDC keynote, but the iPhone-based software platform did receive a few new features with iOS 17, including SharePlay support in the Music app and real-time electric vehicle charging station availability.

SharePlay support in the Music app allows all passengers in a car to control what music is playing from their own devices, even if they do not have an Apple Music subscription. The primary user can initiate a SharePlay session from CarPlay.

Apple Maps now provides electric vehicle drivers with real-time charging availability information for their preferred charging network, and this feature extends to the Maps app on CarPlay, making it easy to find an available charging location while driving.

CarPlay also includes a new interface for replying to messages, as seen in this screenshot shared by Will Sigmon:

The new CarPlay features are automatically available after updating an iPhone to iOS 17. The software update will be released to the public later this year for the iPhone XS and newer, and it is currently available in beta for developers.

The wait continues for the next generation of CarPlay that Apple announced at WWDC 2022. Apple said the first vehicles with next-generation CarPlay support would be announced in late 2023, so more details should be provided in the coming months. New features previewed last year included integration with a vehicle's instrument cluster and climate controls, support for multiple displays, a built-in FM radio app, widgets, and more.

Apple said automakers committed to offering the next generation of CarPlay in future vehicles included Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Renault, and Volvo.

That will be helpful, today you have to use the app of the individual provider.
Wonder how it will compare to ABRP (a better route planner)

Now the question is, how that works.

Do you initiate it from the CarPlay screen? Then basically passenger can do it too. I mean, the screen is in the middle.

I hope shareplay can be disabled. I don't want anyone to switch my music when I'm driving lol. I hope throwing them out of the car is not the only option how to disable this feature.

why dont you read literally one more sentence before rushing to speak. "lol"

'cause one more line literally *tells* you that it's a *user initiated* function. so if someone's suddenly changing your music, throw yourself out of the car, 'cause you're the one who started the shareplay session. "lol"

Read one post above yours. "lol"

Does shareplay require everyone to be using the same music app and subscription, or can that come from multiple places? For instance I will have my personal music library (not Apple Music), while one person might have Apple Music subscription, and another spotify, etc

Looking forward to seeing CarPlay 2 in real life. Some car makers nowadays actually choose to shrink down their instrument clusters. For example just announced electric Volvo EX30 is using a single 12” tablet in portrait mode and nothing in front of the wheel itself, so I wonder how those types of modern cars might benefit from CP2. It does support Apple CarPlay, so we shall see.

still kinda sketched out by CarPlay 2.0. hope the carmakers that implement it are smart enough to put physical controls where it matters the most for safety…

I think most are just going to allow it to now overtake the display in front of the steering wheel, which should be a nice touch. Just like physical controls, once you get familiar with the location, it is easy to use. I still never blind reached for a knob. I feel like most people who are concerned with digital buttons are more intimidated by the idea and have not actually used them.

Finding available chargers will be awesome… the issue with the maps app is it needs to be updated and chargers inaccessible need to be crossed off the list. I was in San Carlos, California trying to find a charger and had a little anxiety as each charger it brought me to was inside of a locked apartment complex.

I actually really dislike that. It’s like the driver is just a passenger.

Apple’s going to have a **** time convincing car manufacturers to let them take over the entire info/entertainment system. Very few if any will want to give up control over this.
Is the information in this article new? I am sceptical car manufacturers would give up so much too.
I would however, at least like apple maps extended to the digital driver’s display and the HUD in my Hyundai, like it already is in the car’s sat nav. Hyundai could do that with a software update if it wanted to.

Probably prefer to sell me a new car.

The updated version of CarPlay though still missing in action presents a unique question for Ford vehicles from 2018 and later with Sync 3.4

Sync 3.4 is still being installed on APIMS in new vehicles now aswell as Sync 4 in others in the UK and I can only assume that the new climate, radio controls from this new carplay will be enabled on both platforms, the APIM is updated via USB where the instrument panel is a dealer only process so I guess we'll not be getting the instrument panel displaying the custom guages anytime soon.

That would be a pretty good move too, even though the Mondeo has been scrapped it's still getting a few new features 😂

So it’s not backwards compatible? 😞

No VW? 😞
