So it’s not backwards compatible? 😞

No VW? 😞
VW is the parent company of Porsche, I'll bet it'll filter down eventually, I'd say Bentley, Audi aswell will get it around the same time as Porsche as it's all the same MMI platform.

Apple’s going to have a **** time convincing car manufacturers to let them take over the entire info/entertainment system. Very few if any will want to give up control over this.

I disagree. Having CarPlay and the newest variant is a selling point for a lot of people looking at new cars. This is actually one less thing for them to worry about. Does anyone actually buy nav packages from a car manufacture?

The companies that were mentioned as being on board were also early adopters for CarPlay when it first launched. I fully expect them to implement these changes.

I'm sure the clunky provided infotainments will still be an option, but once CarPlay starts up, it takes over everything. That is how it works now.

Strange that nothing was mentioned about the next generation of car play at the event. I wonder if it's not going as planned.

GM: “Our customers prefer to reach from the backseat to the touchscreen in front to change to a song they like on Spotify, we don’t want to leave out the five people who don’t have smartphones!”
Don't forget Tesla!

Also, some people seem to be confused between new CarPlay features for all CarPlay supported vehicles, and Next Gen CarPlay which has the ability to display content on additional screens including the main instrument cluster. The latter requires greater integration and support from the manufacturer.

Lol ya'll still think next gen carplay is coming this year? I don't. Not with the crickets we heard at WWDC.

Is the information in this article new? I am sceptical car manufacturers would give up so much too.
I would however, at least like apple maps extended to the digital driver’s display and the HUD in my Hyundai, like it already is in the car’s sat nav. Hyundai could do that with a software update if it wanted to.

Probably prefer to sell me a new car.

I would guess, at least for Hondas, that it would like how they are allowing Google maps to br available over the digital instrument panel in front of the Honda Accord Touring steering wheel now. video link if you want to see.
An interesting question is, if the 2023 Honda has the dash ready for google will it be able to support CarPlay backwards compatible.

I don’t think Audi would ever let me put Apple Maps on my driver’s display via CarPlay. I can get their own navigation system there, which basically is Google Maps, that is just a software activation from the Audi app, but for a quite hefty cost.

I'm wondering what the experience will look like for the people who don't have the full integration capability of the new CarPlay. Does it update the visual look at all or are we just going to get what we currently see in iOS 17 CarPlay?

I know where my next car will come from; Audi, Ford, Honda, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, or Volvo. I ruled out GM, Rivian, and Tesla because of their decisions to drop/not work with Apple CarPlay.
I hope Lexus joins the party soon. Don't trust most of those car companies.

I still haven’t seen anything definitively stating off-line maps will be available in CarPlay. Are we to assume that because it exists on your phone now that it will also exist in the CarPlay environment? This is
Needed for us off road campers.

VW already made clear that they do not plan to support CarPlay 2 in favour of their own OS for all brands that currently use VW.OS (VW, Seat, Skoda, Cupra). Just MMI platform brands get CarPlay 2.

I think most are just going to allow it to now overtake the display in front of the steering wheel, which should be a nice touch. Just like physical controls, once you get familiar with the location, it is easy to use. I still never blind reached for a knob. I feel like most people who are concerned with digital buttons are more intimidated by the idea and have not actually used them.
I mean yeah, I can't drive so it's not something I have personal experience with. I can give the benefit of the doubt there, I just recall this DF post (that took a fair bit of Googling to find):

but then, whilst doing said Googling, I found this:

so the jury is out thus far. I guess my fear is centered around people who are newer to driving, and the possibility that this kind of infotainment system will become standard on many consumer-level cars (i.e. ones more easily accessible to newer drivers). Apple is making it quite obvious that they're aiming for a higher-end market initially, with many (not all, but many) of the carmakers listed for initial support having vehicles that are priced for people who have saved up the capital over time to purchase them. that said, we've all seen Apple go from sky-high prices (iPhone 2G) to far more consumer-minded prices (the SE—no, it's not lost on me that the SE is technically more expensive than the 2G after the $200 price drop, but it comes without the stipulation of a two-year contract that subsidizes it). MacBook Air is perhaps a better example, when $1799 got you a horrendous computer in the beginning and now $1099 (even $999 with the M1) gets you a beast.

LOL, unless reconnecting CarPlay completely ends up working, once I got on iOS 17 CarPlay says ‘Something Went Wrong’ and won’t load maps or anything. I’m sure it’s some undocumented update process I’m not aware of.

Let’s hope. But I don’t think my existing Golf GTI (MY16) will get the updated version. May need to swap out the whole unit - could be a good excuse to increase the screen size!

CarPlay didn't receive much attention during the WWDC keynote, but the iPhone-based software platform did receive a few new features with iOS 17, including SharePlay support in the Music app and real-time electric vehicle charging station availability.

SharePlay support in the Music app allows all passengers in a car to control what music is playing from their own devices, even if they do not have an Apple Music subscription. The primary user can initiate a SharePlay session from CarPlay.

Apple Maps now provides electric vehicle drivers with real-time charging availability information for their preferred charging network, and this feature extends to the Maps app on CarPlay, making it easy to find an available charging location while driving.

The new CarPlay features are automatically available after updating an iPhone to iOS 17. The software update will be released to the public later this year for the iPhone XS and newer, and it is currently available in beta for developers.

The wait continues for the next generation of CarPlay that Apple announced at WWDC 2022. Apple said the first vehicles with next-generation CarPlay support would be announced in late 2023, so more details should be provided in the coming months. New features previewed last year included integration with a vehicle's instrument cluster and climate controls, support for multiple displays, a built-in FM radio app, widgets, and more.

Apple said automakers committed to offering the next generation of CarPlay in future vehicles included Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Renault, and Volvo.

Only the short sighted ones.
BMW for instance, will lose me as a customer, it will be a Merc , Audi or Porsche

I finally got a car with CarPlay, a 2023 Telluride X-Pro, and Apple decides to basically not update it. Great.

Why can’t I set my own wallpapers, from the settings app on my iPhone?

Why is there no Weather app which is the most obvious car app after Maps and Music? I’ve heard it’s because of distraction but what if I’m parked? What if I’m using self driving? What if my passenger wants to pull it up? I mean the built in apps from the manufacturer include weather with the year of complimentary cellular access. At the least it should be hands free and warn me about storms rolling up with severe alerts and such. It would be nice to have a radar up to know what I’m driving towards and if I should take a break for a while to miss something crossing the highway with hail.

Now the question is, how that works.

Do you initiate it from the CarPlay screen? Then basically passenger can do it too. I mean, the screen is in the middle.
Anyone in the car just needs to scan a QR code on your car’s screen and voila! Works great on the dev beta.
