I’m surprised so many are opposed to this. You could get more water resistance out of it, or a larger battery. Or even a larger, more robust speaker. The only downside is you can’t connect external storage devices, but the target market for this phone isn’t professional photographers.
The OnePlus 13 already has IP69 rating with 6000 mAh battery and 50 W wireless charging that's lighter and slightly smaller than the 16PM. It also has 80 W wired charging.

Over the years, there have been rumors suggesting that Apple eventually wants to make an iPhone without any ports, allowing for a completely wireless charging experience. An iPhone without ports has been speculated about, and Apple has even published patents for an all-glass iPhone with no ports or buttons.

Apple apparently considered making its dream a reality with the upcoming iPhone 17 Air, but ultimately decided not to do so. In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says that one of Apple's ideas for the iPhone 17 Air was to design it without a USB-C port, which means it would only charge via MagSafe.

Apple did not end up going in that direction, because there were internal concerns that eliminating the USB-C port in the iPhone 17 Air would get the company in trouble with regulators in the European Union.

With the iPhone 15 lineup, Apple transitioned away from Lightning and adopted USB-C for iPhones because of an EU law that passed in 2022. The law requires technology companies to use a "common port," aka USB-C, for charging purposes. Technically, the law only applies in the European Union, but it was easier for Apple to make the change worldwide than to develop a special USB-C iPhone in Europe and continue using Lightning elsewhere.

Along with potentially angering the European regulators, getting rid of the charging port on an iPhone entirely would undoubtedly upset customers. When Apple eliminated the headphone jack from the iPhone 7, there was a lot of pushback from iPhone users, and other smartphone brands like Samsung spent plenty of time making fun of Apple's choice before ultimately following Apple's lead and removing headphone jacks from Android smartphones.

The iPhone 16 models now support MagSafe charging at up to 25W, and can fast charge with MagSafe and a 30W power adapter. Fast charging allows an iPhone to charge to 50 percent in 30 minutes, and the faster MagSafe charging puts wireless charging on par with fast charging over USB-C. With fast charging available with MagSafe, there wouldn't be a downside to eliminating the USB-C port in terms of speed, but there would be far less flexibility because USB-C chargers and cables have become so universal.

Though Apple isn't adopting a port-free design for the iPhone 17 Air, it's not an idea the company is abandoning. If the new super thin iPhone sells well, Apple will revisit portless iPhones and slim down the rest of the iPhone lineup, too.

Because it’s a trash idea, MagSafe charging is garbage it’s slow and just heats the device GARBAGE! Also I need my port what about when I plug me headphones, Apple dongle, DAC etc…

I’m not saying USB-C is bad, I’m saying mandating the connector into law is stupid. Who is going to invest then tens to hundreds of millions of dollars to develop a new port when they have to get it approved after the fact by a regulator who has already shown an unwillingness to change the standard of other “required” connectors when a better one comes along. No one - so innovation stops. Because regulators who couldn’t get hired to answer the phones at a tech firm think they know better than engineers.

Remember the EU tried to mandate micro-USB. MICRO-USB! Anyone who knows that and still thinks the EU mandating what charging port devices use is a good idea needs to have their head examined.

Laughable! How is Apple stopping real innovation with their hardware and software choices? They’re not - Android exists, other phone manufacturers exist - and all of them would love to make a must-have feature the iPhone doesn’t support.
I like the fact that four USB C cables connected to a 4-port USB C charger can charge our MacBooks, AirPod, iPads, iPhones, and all of our non-Apple devices.

The point was what is now a big a clunky port was once considered svelte. So saying “why would we want something smaller than USB-C” is foolish.
I will not claim that USB-C is the final port for eternity, but it has reached a point where further improvements will be much harder to achieve than they were for its predecessors. Their big flaws have been addressed - USB-C is reversible and robust. It is open to backwards-compatible improvements of the USB-standard; e.g. USB4 allows power and data capabilities no-one was thinking of back when USB-C was introduced. It is compact: there are USB-C phones barely thicker than 4mm already - we are still humans who handle stuff at human scales, and going thinner offers virtually no practical benefit while greatly reducing robustness. I think that USB-C will probably be more than adequate for many decades, and that it is more likely to be replaced by future wireless technologies than any improved port.

wtf is that idea the highest-end iPhone and most expensive should have all the options not with less options brother 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
The Ultra would have the fastest wireless transfer speeds and fastest wireless charging. No port, more waterproof.

The Ultra would be less popular. Bringing portless to mainstream would annoy people who want more options with a port.

Please stop with this portless nonsense!

All other things being equal:
• Wireless headphones have worse sound quality than wired headphones.
• Bluetooth stereo connections have worse sound quality than wired stereo connections.
• Wireless charging is slower and less energy efficient than wired charging.
You missed out the key word "currently". As well as the other big Cs....convenience and comfort.

Can't ever imagine going back to wired headphones/audio.

The Ultra iPhone if ever a thing manifests, should focus on mirroring the AW equivalent. Rugged titanium with features and styling to match.

Yep. My 2022 vehicle unfortunately has wired CarPlay. Since it is paid for and very low miles I plan on keeping it for a LONG time. Removing the charge port would be an instant deal killer for me.
What car is it? 😳 That's inexcusable.

You know you can get little dongles for very little money (50-100) that convert wired to wireless CarPlay? Had one in my old 2019 Audi, and worked perfectly.

I remember going to the first MacBook Air and everyone at the Apple Store I worked at telling me to go Pro. Didn’t need the ports or CD drive.
I’ve never used the port on my iPhone. MagSafe works great as does wireless CarPlay. My previous iPhone would always fill the port with lint from my paint and fail anyway.
I get the data transfer fears but it doesn’t affect a great deal of users. They should keep most of the line up with a port anyway. Just make the iPhone Air port less. Slimmer, water proof, more internal space for battery. Remove the SIM card tray too.

It doesn’t matter how fast it is wireless can never be as faster as wired

Nobody is suggesting that you go back to wired headphones. Not on any platform.

Those of us with latency sensitive and ultra high fidelity use cases NEED them. BT and by extension apple Wireless headphones are notoriously bad at those use cases *at any price point* That is why folks with those use cases are outspoken.

Not everyone has WiFi 7 devices. A lot of people use whatever their ISP gives them. The average user isn’t an IT person and can make it work.
Part of the arrogance of Apple fans. It isnt a good look and ultimately turns folks against the platform. See Tesla for more info.

That, and prices on WiFi 7 routers are still expensive being its still relatively new tech.

Why not add electrical connections back to MagSafe like on the laptops… to avoid issues with lining up pegs, put circular cold rings on the back of the phone, and then put the spring loaded pegs on the MagSafe charger. You’d have the best of both worlds. The wireless could still work and support all Qi charging devices AND give enhanced devices wired advantages including data transfer. Am I missing something? (And I’m pretty sure you could avoid short circuits on the power puck by building smarts into the thing)

EU restrictions? Nah. More likely;

1. Many still need wired CarPlay
2. Wireless charging is considerably slower
3. Data transfer and video recording through USBC is fast and desirable for especially Pro users.

I can see them trying this on one model as a “test” and garner reaction.

But there’s no way the entire lineup would go portless — anyone using it for professional work would have to ditch it. Wifi doesn’t exist everywhere and often is too slow with big files.

Wireless-only charging may be ok at home or in the office when you have a charger available, but what about when your travelling? If you're on a bus, train, aircraft or somewhere else where there's only a USB socket available you need to be able to charge with a cable. If not you have to carry a bulky charger around with you.
