I just don't get Nvidea, they haven't made a new mobile gpu in over an year and have no plans to in the near future. Is the MBP not lucrative for them?

Did you read about the spat between Nvidia and Intel for the new CPUs, and Nvidia not being able to make chipsets for the chips.

Also, they released the 200/300M series chips, which are mostly rebadged 9000 series mobile GPUs.

I need to look into the 57x0 series of ATI cards. Looks like they should fit in the 15" while the 58x0 series might just fit in the 17" if. TDP should be good on that...1 watt more than nVidia. I wonder what the difference between 57x0 and 5650 is?

All of them seem to blow away the nVidia 3xx series. For those who keep insisting, I guess you can make the macbook wider and fit the 250M in it.

The 5700 series is similar to the 5600 series, with the main difference being higher clock speed and support for GDDR5 on the higher 5700 cards (5770).

Basically. I personally hope the new MBP have ATI GPUs, nVidia is falling so far behind, and their 'new' gpus are a discrace. Cmon Apple, make the right choice!

Have you guys heard the news, Optimus definately won't work on non Windows OSs. :D

I think that's great news. Nvidea already exited the mobile GPU scene, so Apple sticking with them would mean outdated GPUs.

The ATI 5830 on the otherhand is awesome and I really hope it finds its way into the new MBPs.

People have been asking for Arrandale (i5), Blu Ray and the latest ATI gpu (5830) for several months now...

Do you guys think Apple might have seen all this feedback before they finalized what to do about the next update and realized that people are really expecting an update this time around, with the ATI 5830, Blu Ray and i5 and decided to go back to the drawing board and give it's customers what they want, even if it means the update will be late by a few months?

I hope that's what's causing the delay.

It's still apple we're talking about, so the answer would be no. What customers want will always fall behind their profit margins.

The elephant in the room that no one's talking about is the tiff between NVidia and Intel. Apple has a lot invested in the 9400m chipset and since Intel won't let NVidia make it for the i-series chips, that could be a real obstacle in Apple's plans.

Will be a big tell as to what's happened here. Does Apple have the OK to make the chipset using Nvidia GPUs? Can't see Apple keep using the 9400M or 9600 for the next round of updates for MB, MBP, Mac Mini, iMac..

Sure will be interesting to see what Apple's been able to sort out and whether they've cut the Gordian knot or knot to get better graphics

Nvidia already announced that they're pretty much abandoning computer GPUs and going to focus on making GPUs for servers, and for cellphones (the Ion) from now on. Which means they won't have much if anything to offer for the new MBPs.

Huh?

There is no chance you will see blu-ray in the update.

ATI maybe.

They sent out a press release a few months ago saying that their focus will be on server gpus and cellphone gpus.

Their laptop gpu line the 3xx is basically a rebranded 9600 which itself is a rebranded 8600 (an almost four year old gpu).

Or just look at their desktop line. No new tech in over an year. The only thing they have on the horizon is the Fermi.

And the Fermi is big, loud, hot, expensive and clearly meant for servers.

There is no way anyone can shrink the Fermi down to fit inside a laptop. So basically, Nvidia hasn't made a new laptop GPU is almost two years and we can rule out Nvidia making a laptop GPU for atleast the next generation (18 months or so).

Don't forget, the posted TDPs are not necessarily what you will see in the final MBP. Apple has a history of using a more advanced GPU and then underclocking it to make the heatsink fit in the thin chassis, for example the X1600 on the 2006 models/

Here's a comparison of an upconverted dvd on a 7 inch screen, versus a blu ray on a 7 inch screen.
