Worse than expected!

i do have an SGI monitor hooked up running off a 16MB gfx card, which does kill dashboard to the point that it's completely not animted when activating...maybe that is also slowing down the videos i tried...i'll have to gut the machine again and run it "stock" to see if there's any difference..

Do you mean those CRT wide-screen displays they used to sell? If yes, how is support on OS X for those? I would like a monitor like that but I am concerned about support for its resolutions not being there when used by my PowerMac G4. Also, how does it connect to the graphics card? Do they use standard VGA or DVI connectors?

no it's the SGI 1600sw flat screen. awesome monitors, awesome resolution, 110 dpi. it's a 17" but the res is 1600 x 1024. it connects to LVDS so you need a specific gfx card, like the old Formac Proformance 3 with the adapter card for the screen. you can find them on eBay for about $250 for both, well worth it if you like high resolutions. i'm going to get a 2nd so i have 3 screens on m G4. they work great in OS9 and up to 10.2.x but you need to "patch" OS X to run it in Panther or Tiger by typing this into terminal:
sudo nvram boot-args="romndrv=1"
they're not fast at refreshing but i'm hoping to get a 32MB card to speed things up from the 16MB i have.
