I suspect that if apple were to replace the butterfly keyboard with the traditional scissors type, they'd see a groundswell of buyers

Yep, I am waiting to see what happens this fall. I am getting tired of sacrificing things for the sake of Apple's quest for thin! For a few extra millimeters Apple has done more harm to it loyal MacbookPro users, including me. Apple's hardware was always the best or the best!

Had mine MBP 15 /TB 2017 in service twice in 6 months, first time the left speakers blew after a terribly loud electric sound, took 5 days to replace the entire top with keyboard, battery, speakers, touchpad and now is again in service for another 5 days to replace the entire top once again because some of the keys got stuck... and i'm very OCD about my stuff and there was not even a speck of dust on it...very dissapointed.
After many calls to Apple, they assigned me a manager that promised that even after the 1 year warranty expires, he will sort it out for me free of charge and if same problem will occur again, he will replace it with a brand new one.

This is part of the confirmation email:
"As advised during the call, I am now your case manager and sole point of contact within Apple."

He gave me all his contact numbers and emails, so i feel better now.

Did he mentioned that they would replace the keyboard again if problems persisted?

Yes, he told me that Apple keeps records of all the repairs and if they see a pattern of same issues all over again, they will fix it outside warranty free of charge.

The thing that has me really soured on apple right now, is the news story that apple knew how easily the iPhone 6 bent, yet sold them, denied the issue and basically did things that seems very unapple like

Apple Knew About Bendgate and Touch Disease iPhone 6 Issues Months in Advance of Repair Programs

I'm definitely rethinking my laptop plans
That article has convinced me that Apple is a morally decrepit company. I always suspected it but now it is clear as day.

With this attitude, one just cannot trust they will do the right thing with the keyboard either.

Looking to buy a new MBPro but am concerned the keyboard will be crap.

I have a 2016. It has the odd distinction of being both the best laptop I've ever owned by a significant margin and also an occasionally problematic child. I had the keyboard jam on me three times, but was able to fix it myself three times without going through a top case replacement.

I know others aren't so lucky and I don't think there are as many problem keyboards as people here seem to think. There are a lot I'm sure, but I doubt it's the avalanche that everyone is claiming. The takeaway is that you have a higher than normal risk of a keyboard issue so ask yourself if you could live with it if the rest of the laptop is worth it even if your keyboard went bad on you.

That's what I did more or less. I actually hated the keyboard and planned to carry an external Bluetooth keyboard around with me. I ended up growing to like the feel of the keyboard so I stopped carrying an external keyboard around. A few keys got stuck, but then stopped sticking after a few days. At least in my case, not getting the top case replaced was the right call. Some problems may resolve on their own and it could quite possibly be that the some of them will benefit from getting broken in.

I love my 2016 for a lot of other reasons. The battery life is great, my joints have grown to seriously appreciate how light it is, the screen rocks, and the sound is amazing for such a flat enclosure. I even think the keyboard has a pretty good feel for a laptop keyboard. I'm a mechanical enthusiast so I'll never adore any laptop keyboard. I mostly hate them all, but I like the butterfly keys (which I never would have predicted).

My stance may soften, but I'm quite bothered by the fact that they knew the iPhone 6 was bendable, and yet didn't do anything about it, prior to its release AND charged customers to repair bent phones.

This relates directly to the MBP, as questions arise to Apple's design choices and use of the keyboard. Actions like this, speak volumes of what they're priority is, and I'm quite disappointed

The keyboard will fail over and over again and you would be screwed when the warranty ends.

Get the laptop fix under warranty.

When you get it back, sell this lemon on eBay ASAP.
