I like what our school system does. We have an After PRom function at the school that lasts from 12Midnight till 0500. Once you're inside you can't leave and come back, if you leave, you;re done for the night. Its $5 (the prom cruise this year is $95/person). My son will go to that. And the thought of underaged drinking chills me, especially since I have to patch up the young fools when they come in unconcious to the emergency room!

We had one of those my senior year of high school. It sucked. Most boring thing ever, and everyone wanted to leave by 2. I would definitely recommend anyone who's school is having one of those things that they shouldn't go. Don't waste your time.

It depends on the school. My school did something similar for graduation, and everyone went. It ended up being a lot of fun.

it totally depends on how they do it, and how many people go. If it's badly done and badly attended, it'll suck. If it's well done and you reach a critical mass of people, it's a great idea.

Is this not the American cultural phenomenon of the "running of the virgins"???

Are not girls expected to put-out on this evening??

Liberal amounts of alcohol need to seal the deal.

sad, but often that is the sick mentality of it
it should be a nice event, but alas it is often degraded into debauchery

It may be wastelanded because what you are talking about is basically breaking the law, and MacRumors doesn't allow that kind of thing.

That is specific to the states though. In France for instance it is perfectly legal for 16 year olds to drink beer in pubs.

Reminds me of when we went for a school trip there when we were about 15, it got messy pretty fast :).

specific to states? um not the states in the US if thats the states you were reffering to and not the nation meaning of the word

in the US, it is illegal to drink under 21 unless it is you at your hope with your parents and even that is state to state

and prom is an american thing which the kids are 17-18 years old

so yes its illegal

Saying the states is short hand for saying the United States of America. I was feeling lazy...

Which is why I said it was specific to the states. Drinking is not illegal in Europe if you are 16 - 18 depending on the country. Therefore my original point was that it was not necessarily talking about an illegal activity if it involves drinking from the age of 16.

Sure, you weren't used to drinking wine with dinner from age ~6. ;)

Having a can of beer or a glass of wine with your parents is not the same thing as being with a group of 6 mates on your own in a pub and being able to buy beer :).

Speaking as someone who will be hiring you young people in a couple of years time ... I am dismayed at the lack of responsibility and common sense that goes into the assumption that getting inebriated out of your mind at a prom is an acceptable thing to do. And dismayed even more at a society that seems to make it the accepted thing to do.

Try this. See if you can have fun without getting trashed. Buck the trend and show some individuality.

Using/Abusing alcohol (or other substances) is expensive and the forseeable future is littered with car wrecks and poor life choices.

Its better to do it when you are a teenager than wait until you are in your twenties. When I was a teenager I did just about everything you can imagine, now I'm pretty much T-total and the nearest I come to taking drugs is smoking cigarettes. I don't think I would be either of those things if I hadn't got it out of my system when I was younger.

Personally, I don't mind if people get drunk, as long as they can still walk, have some judgement remaining, don't start fights, don't break windows, don't bang cars, don't throw stuff, don't get himself and friends kicked out of the pub/bar/club, and don't need us to babysit him/her for the rest of our night.

While I don't do it more than once every 6 - 8 weeks now (estimate), I have drank until I've become tipsy numerous times. Sorry that I fit some sort of bad stereotype, but I do drink, and when I go out to a bar with friends, I rarely limit myself to 2 or 3 drinks unless I have something important to do the next day. However, out of my own judgement, I usually just go home at around 1 AM or so (because I live so close to the "city"). Just don't do the things I mentioned before, and your drunkenness is tolerable. Otherwise, you're a pain in the ass and a liability to all your friends.

Everyone knows what people are referring to when they mention "The States". Lets not be pedantic now...

am I only one who thinks it is stupid to get wasted any time. And even dumber underage. There is no joy in getting so drunk you can not remember the night

I am talking from experince. Throwing down the game cube controller saying I was to drunk to play being the last thing I remember. Next thing I remember is throwing up. Apprentely during that black out time I drank some more and I told a lot of secrets I should of kept.

And I paid dearly for it the next morning because of a hang over. It is not fun. There is no point to drink to the point of getting drunk

I will say it. I hope the cop catches the kids who do this haul there buts down to the jail for the parents to come get them. Give them a nice pretty 500+ fine. IT might get it though their think heads that it is STUPID.

There are better ways to enjoy one self that getting drunk.

I remember my prom. I actually was able to get girls and went with a great one. Sure, we drank, we partied (no drugs whatsoever). I was lucky enough to have a friend with great parents who actually understood that some people aren't smart enough to make good choices so they opened their house to about 20 of us. This meant parental supervision, no driving, and being around people that were sober if things got out of hand. Sure, we drank a lot before this prom weekend, so we knew how to handle ourselves.

I tell you what, if I could go back to that night it would be the best thing possible. The things that went on were amazing and alcohol served it's purpose very well.

I can see the perspective of people that think it is horrible to drink underage, but honestly after coming to college and turning 21 last year it only helped me to know my limits before coming to college.

I have stories riddled of people that didn't drink and were not mature enough because they were locked down by their parents in high school. Surprisingly, these are the drunk-drivers and alcoholics that I know now.

Of course, I had a full-time job, paid off brand new car, scholarship to school by my junior/senior year of high school, so I may be bucking the trend of these so called "irresponsible juniors."

I think it is just human nature to say kids are irresponsible. Aristotle (or was it Socrates?) said it over 2000 years ago. Nothing changes there. After all, those irresponsible children have been growing up and taking charge of the world since, well, since we evolved. Nothing significantly awful happens.

And alcohol has been around forever as well, and yet here we are, chatting and not acting like drunken vandals despite having a few drinks here and there.

I just had a relaxing beer tonight. I've been sitting in the library all day, every day of every week, trying to get my PhD thesis finished.

There are plenty of equally fun ways of having fun, and playing "beer pong" with friends is just one of them. Sitting by a bonfire at the beach, and playing drinking games is another.

From your description, it just sounds like you got drunk all wrong. ;) If you were me, you'd somehow enjoy yourself when drinking.

I'm not trying to sound like an alcoholic, but I will probably drink too much again in the future (eg: after my thesis is finished is one good time to celebrate with a bottle of wine, as will my birthday, which should be very close to my thesis submission). I'm not going to drink until I die, or pass out in a gutter. People make things seem as though if you drink more than 3-4 drinks, you're going to do something stupid and ruin your life. The picture these people paint becomes so bleak, all from a few bad experiences.

That is a very American phenomenon. Do you mind if I ask where you are from country wise?

Not America. It was rather obvious, no? ;) I'm actually from Canada, and I've been living in Australia for the past 4 years. I have also lived in England for a year or so --- London mostly, and a month in Durham. Didn't make it to Surrey, unfortunately. I'm sure I passed it on my way south, but......

You should also see the Americans who come study in Australia for 5 months. With the 18 year age limit on drinking, letting Americans loose in Australia is like leaving meat in a room full of starving wolves. They drink themselves silly for the first 2 months, and then they slow down a bit (but still get rather pissed every single night). It's funny, but also pretty sad that a trip away from America is the equivalent of breaking free from their shackles.
