Come on now... So many people are willing to pay for a Rolex, this is nothing. Will sell out within 10 mins.

They didn't explicitly say it wasn't gold plated did they? That'd substantially reduce the cost.

No, all the reports cite that it is a solid gold, not plating. The rose gold was also indicated to be a special 'blend' to be harder, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's also designed to resist color changing.

The main problems with gold for watches is that they scratch and dent much easily than steel, and they can also change color over time.

e.g. OMEGA makes their own rose gold alloy dubbed Ceragold which is supposedly three times harder than gold itself, and is also retains it's color forever (according to OMEGA). http://www.omegawatches.com/planet-omega/watchmaking/sedna-gold

$1200 seems about fair. At first when I heard that they were making gold watches, I thought it would be much more expensive (but I didn't see the case designs, yet). Sight unseen I was thinking $5K. But after seeing photos and scaled product pics, $1200 seems about right.

No really, I just think it doesn't look good on man unless you are a mafia dude. :D

Woman, I can see them wearing it.

If you don't own any gold accessories and don't know any man who does except gangsters, then you must live in the ghetto.

Pure gold is worth US$1,231.50 per troy ounce (about 31.1 grams). Eighteen carat gold is only 75% pure. I bet that watch BODY has less than half an ounce of gold. Unless the band is also solid 18k gold, which is highly unlikely at that price.

I agree. I highly doubt this thing is anywhere close to pure gold. It's def an alloy or plated. Plated is cheap - always is. An alloy would explain the comments about twice as hard. Either way I think your math kind of sums it up - not going to be solid gold.

$1200 every year for the egotistic rich douche to have the latest and greatest, genius :apple:

What else are you going to spend you money on if you are super rich. People buy watches that are tens of thousands of dollars and even one of kind watches and they spend BUCKS on them. Just like any hobby, the rich have the money and someone will make them whatever they want because they like the look or the fact that it's a limited edition product that only a few people have.

If i had millions of dollars, I'd probably buy one because i would have for more formal occasions, another for daily use, and maybe another for when I'm cycling, etc.

Do you have any idea how many people around the world collect watches? A LOT.

At least Apple recognizes that there is a market for gold plated watches but I don't think it's going to cost $1200. I think Apple's got their head screwed on a little better than that. I can se it maybe costing $600 or so, but $1200? I don't know about that.

Just because other people have more money than you doesn't mean anything other than they have more money than you and they become more eccentric because of it. Rich people tend to spend money on things most of us wouldn't. It's part of the gig.

Are you focusing on the solid gold/bright red Edition watch in the OP? If so, it's a woman's version. There are other Edition versions that are more masculine.

Really? Because I'm a guy so if by any chance some gold watch touches my skin something will happen or...? Unbelievable.

On a charitable reading, the guy was simply saying that the watch design is too effeminate, and I'd have to agree with him. There's nothing misogynistic or sexist about it -- its a matter of design and personal taste.

Still looks like a ladies watch to me.

I have a manual wind mechanical watch with a power reserve complication and that is only 6.6mm thick.

The Apple Watch is so thick you can't fit it under a cuff. That's a pretty horrendous oversight for any watch collector.

I have a Patek Philippe Calatrava that is 8mm thick.
So what?

This isn't a dress watch.
Sport watches tend to be thicker than 12.5mm.
Rolex subs are 12.5mm.

A Rolex is a work of art lasting more than a lifetime, only a fraction of those people would be interested in this.

High-End 18-Karat Gold Apple Watch Could Cost Up to $1,200

I know that the watches I've owned are much less thick.

That's good for you.
The only sport watches with mechanical movements which are thinner would be the Royal Oak 15202 and the Nautilus 5711.

You would be hard pressed to find any mechanical sport watches with thinner cases than 12.5mm.

AP ROO diver is 13.75mm thick.
Panerai 111 is supposedly 15mm despite housing a manual wind movement.

Maybe Apple will have a trade-in program to recapture some of that gold. Offer a reasonable amount off the next version upon surrendering your old watch and that takes the sting out of the upgrade. Gold is gold. They're going to need to buy gold for the new cases from somewhere anyway.

Hahaha.
I'm sure all the apple watches older than five years will all be in landfills.
The battery will poop out much sooner than that.

Yeah, but a Rolex will hold its value over time. A smart watch? Not so much...

The price isn't really that high, for most watch collectors, anyway. I just don't see this being all that popular given that the technology will be obsolete in no time.

Congrats, but this isn't a sport watch. It's the "Edition". If someone is going to drop over 1k on a gold watch, they probably want the ability to wear it with formal attire

The sport watch is made from cheaper materials than the other two which is why most people think it will be the low end model.

So, Strengthened Ion X glass, a Composite back (instead of ceramic), and lighter 7000 series aluminum are cheaper materials?

The band doesn't count because you can get the sort band for the regular watch.

When have you ever heard of a company doing a product line-up where they consistently list the cheapest option in the middle?

Does Apple place its phones as iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 Plus?

And how do you know what most people think?

Sorry, but no. Even if it is a good a price taking into consoderation the 18k gold, it will devaluate in a year, unlike a Rolex.

Combining technology with classic watches is a mistake IMO.

Besides, gold with that red band? Looks cheap and classless.

Watches can't be effeminate. The only things that can be effeminate, by definition, are men.
