I still think the pricing is ridiculous on the edition, but showcasing it in high end stores is definitely the way to go to get it sold

It's all perspective. Let's say you made 50k this year and thought the sports version was a simple purchase. That's be equivalent to someone making 2.5 million a year and buying a 17k edition watch. It's an easy purchase for them.

Don't think they'd be caught wearing it? Okay, well what about a gift for their teenage son or daughter?

They will sell, just not to us.

Oh again it's absolutely going to sell. There's no doubt about that and apple will once again lead the industry.

And the purchasers will wear them proudly, but that doesn't mean they aren't ridiculously priced lol. How much could that thing really have cost apple to make?

Of course, there's a reason apple is the most valuable company in the world, they're there to make money, and they do it better than anyone else by making great products and changing industries by themselves

Yes and no. Having more money doesn't equate to scaling up on purchases all the time. I know plenty of people who live way outside their means and I know plenty of people that live way below their means.

i'm sorry, I don't remember GMT II Master stainless model being 300 times cheaper than the platinum model.

and are you actually telling me the 9700 extra is purely down to "material used in making the case"??

The Watch Edition price differential isn't 300 times is it?

With a steel vs platinum Rolex, the mechanical watch movement probably bears a much larger proportion of the overall cost of the watch so the difference in materials used to make the case etc is likely not to be as disproportionate as that with the Apple watch.

The above said, the price difference is not purely down to the material used to make the case - who prices anything based on the actual cost of the raw materials used? There is always a mark-up and those who can afford to pay the premium for a diamond and platinum Rolex (which often times are around 20 times more expensive than the equivalent steel version (if it is available) do so not because they believe that the diamond and platinum is intrinsically worth that extra, they do so for more intangible reasons such as scarcity of the product and their own desire for it. The higher up the range of luxury goods (including watches) that you go the more price inelastic it becomes - those who can afford a USD10,000 Watch Edition, could and would probably still pay USD12,000 or USD15,000 for it.

And therefore, in this regard, Apple has adopted a very Rolex-like sales and marketing model to sell their watches to the end consumer.

Why do people assume because a person makes more annually (usually in the millions at that), that they spend more proportionally?

10k for a made in China watch with the same internals as the $350 watch

Lol

I'll stick with my Swiss made timepiece, thanks apple for making the decision so easy for me

There is an old saying, "A fool and his money are soon departed". Apple will probably make a load of money from it but I'll stick to my quote. Yes I have spent slightly more than $500.00 for a watch but IT IS timeless and will not go out of fashion or become obsolete.:)

I wonder how many people will really purchase the $10,000 watch.

After seeing it again, I'll probably change my order from the steel one to the gold one with the blue leather strap. Looks quite nice.

Biggest issue I have is it's about $18500 here in China when it's only $15000 in the US...
