If you have a back up you will keep the files you had. If not, I am afraid you will lose the files. I didn't have a backup before, so I lost all my files :(

I’m starting to regret my transition from windows to Mac. This is a nightmare.

Try lunching the installer from the recovery mode (be sure you are connected to internet) without erasing your hard drive.
In my case this didn't work (it took so much time) so I just erased my hard drive and lunched the installation again and it worked.

I am just proposing what I did to solve the same problem. Maybe someone else have a better solution or you can just take it to Apple they may have some solution

I can’t afford to erase my drive. Thanks for the feedback. I will report back. Hating Apple today

Now it’s dead
[doublepost=1506378147][/doublepost]What are my options now. I’m so upset

This happened to me too, my startup disk was completed deleted and the entire SSD was unable to be recognised...even in recovery mode. Absolute disaster of an installation. I should have trusted my instincts and waited.

Currently I am with Apple support trying to regain access to my SSD so I can create a startup disk and restore from time machine.

Miltz, I see why you’re upset but not backing up client work before updating an OS seems incredibly irresponsible. Operating system aside, I think your poor planning here got you into this situation.

I hope it gets resolved for you, and that you don’t lose any work, but it’s straightforward to avoid situations like this altogether. Always back up work, especially client work, before doing anything even remotely risky to your work machine!

Failing that, try restarting the Mac and holding Command, Option, P, and R to reset the NVRAM. Once the device restarts, check to see if the update progresses.

If all that fails, turn off the Mac and when turning it back on, hold down Command and ‘R’ to enter Recovery Mode and start the installation again.

Good News... and I'm not so sick anymore. I tried to install the update again after going to command R. I didn't reformat the drive. High Sierra installed and now I'm typing this from my laptop. Everything seems okay for now and all my files are present.

did you force the laptop to turn off mid-installation?
I did. After 3 hours of being stuck.

Glad it worked out for you. Now, get a backup done asap.

Not normal if it isn't showing remaining time at all. If you do decide to reboot and the install isn't stuck, you may have to install from recovery mode.

Typically new OS install goes smooth. As you can see, sometimes it doesn't for some people.

‘macos could not be installed on your computer’

‘The path/system/installation/packages/OSinstall.mkpg appears to be missing or damaged’

happened to me few times already, any idea what’s wrong?

A wise old internet meme: "Always mount a scratch monkey." That is, use a spare drive/mac without your valuable work on it.

I have an extra MBP that is not my work machine. That one got HS and only after backup. When it's safe to do so I will upgrade the work pc. and that might be .2 or .3

Will all my current files still be in place? Or will the install from recovery delete them. I have client jobs on there
[doublepost=1506378641][/doublepost]I’m never doing a launch day install ever again

Mine got stuck and i rebooted and got kernel panic when trying to start again but internet recovery worked (cmd +r) and installation worked second time with all my files still left

Wow!! Thank you all for all this! Certainly is helpful as I currently wait for HS to update. Yea, my MBP 2012 is way behind on updates. But its better to let you all work out the kinks so that I don't have to!!

Again thank you! This was extremely helpful!😊
